  • Very, very good, indeed!

  • I had no idea the song was literally about the trout, thanks, and thank you Professor.

  • @Joecbg100 Its name literally translates @The trout@ and Moriarty made it clear what it was about. Does he look like the type of man that makes up stuff?

  • @Zanator1 Sorry and I don't think he made it up.

  • @Joecbg100 LoL, i should be apologizing, i was a bit of a bitch...

  • @Zanator1 Only a kinda. :)

  • a vulgar performance

  • I'd love to have a traduction of this

  • wow. what a voice. the true heir of peter pears....maybe?

  • @edwardappleton01

Bostridge couldn't muster a quarter of the sound or pathos Pears can on an opera stage - the thought of him attempting Peter Grimes or any of the roles written for Pears by Britten is ludicrous. Bostridge sings the music very correctly, which he and Pears have in common, but interpretively he adds nothing, it's done precisely as written with no addition. I understand what you're saying, but I don't believe Bostridge does any of the things that made Pears special.

  • @jaketaz OMG no. And no again. Also, no.

Bostridge is a musical hero. And Julius Drake is the king of accompanists.

  • So ein Kack

  • Then there is Souzay the "master"

  • this makes me laugh!:)

  • @newFranzFerencLiszt

The beauty and happiness of a wild animal is destroyed by a unsportsmanlike predator using dishonest means--- it's hardly a cheery based on the words. However the accompaniment is certainly playful.

  • @Spanglefeather Die catcher (er) and the narrator (ich) is the same person in the literary work. That seems hard to understand for people not accustomed to the German romantic hunter figure.

  • Well sung and accompanied by the really fantastic Julius Drake.

  • Anyone who knows Victor Borge will understand why, at the beginning of this video, my first instinct was to say "Hands off, please."

That aside, Ian Bostridge is one of my favorite tenors in the light English/German art song style (i.e. he should not do Wagner if he values his life). I've heard him on everything from this to Britten and he does them really, really well.

  • I'm adicted to this now. It's just so very cheery!

  • Very clear diction and excellent rendition!

  • Bostridge is fantastic :)

  • THIS IS NOT GOOD!

  • love his german, and im actually obsessed with his sound.

    so effortless.

  • In my opinion Ian Bostridge sings this beautifully.I would certainly recommend his version to anyone new to this magic music of Schubert, Its hard to believe I know but there are people who are unaware of the beauty of this wonderful genre,How they are missing out, mind you we can,t all like the same things.

  • @justinbieberforking Okay dude, I'm perfectly fine with it if you like Justin Bieber, even if some of us don't, but please don't go trolling on other videos of music, particularly if you don't like them. Thanks!

  • I cant believe he isnt German,

  • He is really English, not German, are you sure??!!!

  • This is a truly wonderful version of the song - art song at its best. wonderful sound pictures. Wonderful performance. You have a wonderul pianist too.

  • This is just awesome, thank you. Thanks to Ian Bostridge too :)

  • Very beautiful. The best version on YT IMO is Nicholas Spanos's.

  • He is good, I lobe singers like him, with soft voice. I'm starting to search if he has any Winterraise recordings. Wish we could invite him to one of our seminar concerts!

  • @libraryzsu Yes he has winterreise... it is beautiful...

  • @SoulNotes1

Thank you. I've just heard he is coming to my county next month. I'm so gonna by a ticket!

  • @libraryzsu I have a few uploads and I can upload some of Winterreise so you can hear it. The Shone Meullerin is also a must... I will upload and let you know if you so wish.

  • Brilliant Ian Bostridge... The makes that fish versy slippery - as indeed they are...

  • lol a song about a trout.... only good if u dont know what the words mean haha =p

  • Ian Bostridge is English ?! OMG I was think he was German !

    He sing so sweet !

  • @ch36e Yeah, his name sounds really german......NOT! -.-'

  • Bostridge proves again that he is one of the best performers of art song out there at the moment. I love the light touch of his voice and perfect diction. For any of you that enjoy this but aren't familiar with him -- I suggest listening to his English Art Song album as well. It's fantastic!

  • I'm singing this for my singing exam in June. His German is amazing, I suck at pronouncing it so much. I love this song

  • hahaha i did this song as well for my yr 12, and i barely passed, make sure u look confident in there

  • In my opinion by far the best version on YouTube.

  • Listen to Wunderlich's too. One of the greatest masters of German Lied.

  • Ahhh, this is very lovely. Die Forelle is one of my favourite lieds by Schubert (I love the catchy and charming melody, and the accompaniment is lovely too). Bravo Ian Bostridge!

  • To bad it ends up about Bostridge and

    not about Die Forelle

  • I can play this on piano

  • So I'm doing this piece for my college audition...wish I had that voice!!!!

  • Exceptional performance.

  • One of the few 'greatest' living Classical Singers! Thanks for Posting.

  • these vids where he lip synchs and they do MTV shit really bug me - Winterreise is just the WORST, but close your eyes and it's lovely singing and playing

  • please ppl comment in english video freak was my old user name

  • The acctual name of the song in english is The trout

  • @Jonny091986:

    franz schubert war österreicher.

  • @Jonny091986, bin deiner meinung, dennoch war Franz Schubert Österreicher ;)

  • actual name?? Schubert was born in Austria!! He sopoke german! Therefore is the actual title of this "Lied" (song) ,,Die Forelle" The trout is just the translation...

  • Schubert singt er viel besser als Händel.

  • Its very easy to hear, im memorizing the song for my high school lab as of now

  • :D:D holidayfreak is just a freak. he doesnt mean it like he said. i am sure that he likes it^^

and when not:D i dont know. this is a kind of humor, i think. and i know^^

    FU all

  • Judging from your comment, I can tell you're very smart.

  • u r nuts! :P

  • Senzillament extraordinari.

    FERRAN (malalt de Bach)

    des de Barcelona (Catalunya)

  • VERY GOOD

  • GOOD

  • I wish the singer didn't lean on the piano

  • why?

  • It just seems a bit unprofessional to me personally

  • To me too. My singing class proffesor doesen't let me to do that.

  • same here

  • cool

  • great

  • Absolutely beautiful version!

  • Wunderlich aveva una voce meravigliosa!! Bostridge proprio no!!! :P

  • It is hard comparing this clip to that of Fritz Wunderlich, both are exceptionally good. Bostridge's voice is not as tempered and as seasoned as Wunderlich's. Bostridge's voice is very good, but rather feminine. Sometimes I'd rather listen to this than Wunderlich's version because it has more dynamism.

  • dont you mean boyish? He seems to be a true tenore leggiero, not like Juan Diego, who many believe is a Tenorino--because of thoose very deep sounding low notes. a tenore leggiero has these.

  • I loved it, thank you

  • isn't there one moer stanza?

    how come it's never sung?

  • I adore this recording. Both pianist and singer appear to understand eachother well - the music flows.

Altohough I'm hardly to the pianists standard (by any means in my opinion) I feel that he does a wonderful job of accompanying - giving the support exactly where needed. I look up to you Julius Drake.

  • Wonderful "Hochdeutsch"!

  • Beautiful. I have a few of his English recordings but no German. Love the voice and interpretation, just there, not showy!

  • Bravo Bostridge!!!

  • Wykonanie Bostridge'a przejdzie do klasyki, bo jest naprawdę znakomite.

  • Doch endlich ward dem Diebe

Die Zeit zu lang. Er macht

    Das Bächlein tückisch trübe,

    Und eh ich es gedacht,

    So zuckte seine Rute,

    Das Fischlein zappelt dran,

    Und ich mit regem Blute

    Sah die Betrogene an.

  • Ein Fischer mit der Rute

    Wohl an dem Ufer stand,

    Und sahs mit kaltem Blute,

    Wie sich das Fischlein wand.

    So lang dem Wasser Helle,

    So dacht ich, nicht gebricht,

    So fängt er die Forelle

    Mit seiner Angel nicht.

  • In einem Bächlein helle,

    Da schoß in froher Eil

    Die launische Forelle

    Vorüber wie ein Pfeil.

    Ich stand an dem Gestade

    Und sah in süßer Ruh

    Des muntern Fischleins Bade

    Im klaren Bächlein zu.

  • wow, this is so well sung!

  • he seems a German.

    his german diction is perfect.

    awesome!!!

  • He is English.

  • @smoothiw

    wow he really seems German!!!

is diction is really perfect i can understand this text better as by an german singer! And i'm from Germany!!!

    Wow i'm now totally speechless!!!!

  • "His German diction is also good." - I approve this message!

  • He's my favourite singer...

  • aha! me too lol

  • dope

    :)

  • Thank you, smoothiw, I adore this lied.

In fact I adore Scubert's work and that includes his lieder. This singers's diction

    is so good.

  • Ian Bostridge is pure music expressed with pure voice.

  • were sigin this 4 music MAD HARD

  • Wonderful of both the singer and the pianist. Bravi!

  • Ein wunderbares Lied, eine wunderbare Stimme

  • love it! thanks for posting! He was pretty young then...

  • Sehr gut!

    Ian is performing this weekend!

    March 28, 2009 at 8pm

    Carnegie Hall

  • Gutes Deutsch.

Aber guckt euch mal 1:23 an!

    "OH MY GOD!"

  • Excelente interpretación! Impecable!

  • Bright Forelle

    It is.

The pronunciation of "S", too, was good.

  • Ile razy widzę strumień, tyle razy mam w uszach "Pstrąga" :))) Chyba nikt nigdy lepiej nie oddał muzyką płynącej wody....uwielbiam ten utwór i lubię go właśnie po niemiecku...a ten mody człek ma wielki urok i piękny głos!

  • awesome!!!!!!it's just perfect!!!!

  • LINDO!!!

  • His German is awesome, you'd think he's a native speaker...even the difficult "ch"'s and the "Umlaute"

Excelente.

  • lol... we always had to sing this song in school :P

  • whats the storyline of die forelle? a guys dies in a forest?

  • Actually, it´s about a trout which dies in a river.

  • what a weird story. any allusion behind it? any significance?

  • what a voice. much better than many opera-tenors!

and as a german i have to say his "aussprache" is as good as he was born here.

  • Tell me about, he is only of the only few tenors I will ever listen too.

  • who are the other tenors?

I like the boyish, golden sheen in his voice, are there other tenors who have this quality?

  • I'd recommend as well Mark Padmore and Gerd Türk for that matter. :-)

  • they all sing handel tho

i play clarinet so i prefer classical and post-classical music. baroque is also too brainy for me

  • You didn't ask for repertoire, but for singers with similar voice qualities... so... there they are. ;-)

  • Well someone like Gary Mauer or Hugh Panaro,

  • liking hugh panaro

  • I agree absolutely. He sings German as though he was a native, which is even more impressive since he doesn't speak German very well. Since I heard him first I didn't know it is possible to sing a foreign language without the slightest hint of an accent. He must have a miraculous ear. Very amazing! Oh... and his voice is the spring in itself. Lovely singer.
