TORN CURTAIN caused the breakup with Hitch; but much as I admire Herrmann (I think I'm second to none here) I think his score for that film was just too heavy. Addison's score, beginning with that superb electric guitar motif (unfortunately never repeated because the superb cue for Gromek's muder was omitted) has been unfairly neglected. The Prelude and (deleted) G murder cue are fantastic; listen to the development of that motif in the murder cue. Pity it was omitted but it's on the ST.
Herrmann's mentors were the Russians and the Brits. One can hear traces of several Brit composers in B's music, and, of course, the Russians; but don't leave out Puccini; one definitely hears him in those verismo chords in Wuthering Heights and those gorgeous lyrical sections. As for Hitch w/o Benny, c'mon. Hitch would have done it anyway. Benny was set for SPELLBOUND and listen to the goregous Rozsa score. Also don't undermine the great Waxman and Tiomkin scores for Hitch's films.
@JuanitoRocks----The Fahrenheit 451 slection is "Fire Engine". I am a huge Herrmann fan. Check out my Herrmann video uploads including Fahrenheit 451.
Hitch and Benny Herrmann were introduced on the hope they would "get along" in order to collaborate. None can compare with the match, masterpieces, Bravo,
No other combo has compared to date. Those were the days folks.
The world has been blessed with a number of great film composers. Hermann and
Hermann and Rozsa are my favorites but there are several others of nearly equal stature IMHO. These include Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Alfred Newman, Max Steiner, Ennio Morricone, and Nino Rota.
Boy you got that right. Indeed the greatest of them all and very underappreciated I think... only 1 Oscar to his credit for Obsession or did he get one for Taxi Driver too? The Ghost & Mrs. Muir ---- his greatest ---- wasn't even nominated.
@irarube He got one for "The Devil and Daniel Webster" (1941). The irony is that his much greater score for "Citizen Kane" that same year wasn't even nominated (if I remember correctly, in any case it didn't win).
Some of these *are* actually quite well-known, such as "Cape Fear" (due to Scorsese's remake, which utilised the same music) and "Twisted Nerve" (due to Tarantino, of course).
Nicely done.Maybe a little It's Alive and Bride Wore Black for v.2?

BH is my all time favorite film composer. However, one needs to salute his 'mentors' (Prokovief and Sibelius in general).
