  • if i am not mistaken, this is the first proper sprite scaling game from sega, or was hang on released earlyer than this ? i can't remember, as when i first entered a arcade hall, they where both there.

i still like to see this game, as it gave a good impression on what to come. games like outrun, powerdrift, and afterburner use the same sprite scaling :-) can't get enough of those games. if only they would release them on ps3 network and xbox live, so we get a sharper image :-)

  • This is a great game. Wasn't there a 3d version with 3d glasses of this game released on the Master System as well?

  • I think you're right about the 3D version... I have some vague recollection of that. I've never seen any of the MS 3D versions, but I love that kinda thing.

  • I had Space Harrier 3D on the MS along with Out Run 3D & Maze Hunter 3D, ok ish effect from the LCD shutter glasses but both Space Harrier 3D and Out Run 3D where not a patch on the original versions.

IMO Space Harrier, Out Run & Afterburner on the Saturn where best played using the Nights Analogue pad.

    Great Vid again Steve.

  • Yikes, this game looks very disorienting. It looks fun, but it looks quite difficult to see what's going on. At least the bullets are nice and big.

  • love space harrier's first level's music.

  • I wonder if Panzer Dragoon was inspired by this game. They play differently, but the on rails have a somewhat similar feel to them.

If anything, there was a cheat in the first PD where you could choose to play without the dragon in a Space Harrier mode.

    It makes me wonder...

  • You gotta hit the dragon in the back of the head!!!

  • This is a great collection, played em all in the arcades, boy do I miss those arcades. I wonder if you have the Saturn version of Virtual On in your collection, that was the acest game we had in our local arcade in Leeds, it was even better in 2 player mode.

  • Sadly no, I don't have that one.

My Saturn collection is pretty limited, to be honest.

  • i had that on the Sega Megadrive, it looks alot beter on this

  • The Saturn was initially designed to be the best 2D console in the world, so it specialised in sprite scaling.

So these games by Yu Suzuki look great.

It's a pity when it comes to 3D, it's an entirely different story.

  • this game kicked ass in the arcade, because of the controls they had for it,,,

  • There's an odd Terry Gilliam-esque feel to those graphics.... :P

  • The gameboy advance version is actually quite good too. The C64, and other 8 bit versions are not so good. 16 bit sprite scaling is needed to make it smooth.

I also own this version and play it quite often. Excellent Saturn collection. The PAL version plays quite well.

  • The saturn is amazing

  • keep those saturn videos comming!!

    gotta love the saturn
