The musical was so execrably inaccurate it's ridiculous. And the national tour was dreck - looked like a high school production, complete with model boat being drug across black plastic trashbags that drew laughter. The Forbidden Broadway spoof captured the waste of an evening perfectly. Aside from a couple of lovely songs, it was incredibly disappointing as a piece of theatre.
@dfwjac Wow. Let it rest. It's a clip from a musical from almost 15 years ago that someone posted because they happened to like the song and/or video. They weren't asking or looking for a pseudo-historian or musical theater wannabe to tear it apart. They just shared it because they thought other people might want to see it and/or hear it. Sheesh. Write a newspaper article if you want to be a critic. I so tired of you trolls and your ilk.
One of the best things I saw on B'way over the years. It did a great job of telling a different story. There is an interesting history of how the story evolved throughout the rehearsal process. Ask Judy Kaye...
I saw this in 1999 on Broadway after I moved to NYC. It was a magnificent spectacle to behold. The sets were minimalist and yet evocative of time at sea. I'm still hooked to music to this day. Godspeed Titanic!
I saw Titanic the Musical back in the late 90's at the Lunt-Fontaine theater. I have to say that it was a truly amazing piece of theater with extremely impressive sets and a gorgeous score. I still listen to the soundtrack today and I hope that someday there will be a broadway revival of the show. I agree with pudgeuncle that the show was overshadowed by the movie which is a shame. The musical was definitely a feast for both the eyes and ears.
It is a shame that the show was overshadowed by the movie months later. The show was very admirable except that the special effects were sometimes silly, like the boat turning on it's side and the piano falling after much lighter objects. The performances were lovely and it humanized the story in a way the movie for me failed.
Perhaps it was not the an ultimate of Broadway darlings-but the NYC production I saw got a well deserved stading ovation-and a few tears were shed knowing and seeing in the well known story played out .
Don't mean to offend, but this was a dreadful show. Generic music, cliche after cliche. A couple of good special effects, but really just an excuse for broadway to capitalize on the movie's success.
@Mendelson Yes, the movie was written (or at least released) after this show came to Broadway. Depending on which production you saw might have effected your view on the show.
Gorgeous! I saw the touring production of this in '98 or '99, and didn't care for the book or the actors. With the production that I saw, the music was the only redeeming quality. This video makes me wish I'd seen the OBC.
This is a beautiful score and I was able to see an excellent production of it, and when it's done well, it really is a moving show. I wish I had seen this when it was on Broadway because they had an excellent cast, and again, the music is beautiful.
I love this musical sooooo much. I'd love to see it revived - but I love this cast so much, it would be sort of weird with other people. But still awesome :D Anyhoo, love this. The harmonies in "Godspeed Titanic" will never fail to give me chills.
i agree with you there this cast is great. But i wouldn't worry alot of shows if they revive have alot of originals in it. I just love Victoria Clarke as Alice Beane i am not too sure about Thereasa as Kate Murphy i like her but she seems a bit too plain in the opening.
there she is. tons of steal. but not real ship of. act like we see a boat watch it float ship of air. we sink and pretend were eyeing a ship at star board. tho millions were spent our ship looks alot like cardboard.
I saw Titanic the Musical 5 times on Broadway. It is one of my all time favorates. I hope it will be revived in 2012, the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the doomed liner. This clip is a great memory. It is wonderful to see these actors again. Thanks for the clip.
And a great musical it is. In fact the Cast recording of the Broadway show works great as so much can simply take place in your imagination. I've never seen the stage show but I've heard the recording countless times and it's a moving, at times funny (in a good way) and ultimately respectful to the tragic event.
I sing with the Inspiration Choir and we are singing this at Leeds Town hall this spring whooppeeeeee

i have to say that the musical is much better then the movie, just because its based on the events of what happened and not the love story
