totally disagree. this is why we call it new year celebration. of course we nee food at the new year and of course we buy stuff there, and also to people who say we have to many new year...well we're in different states right? right. this research have the right point but wrong idea...
for all hmong people, your people have too many new years.Looking at other people none hmoob they have one new year for their people. we are as miaohmong we need learn from other people. and corrected ours new year as one for all.
In fact , hmoob people have too many new years in the same country. they are make a new year for hmong people so they can make money. look at other group people they have one new year for all. hello Miaohmomg people we learn other people, and correct your own mistake, this message to hmong people whom lead.
I disagree. It's not just turning into a marketing place. It's an ENGAGEMENT of bring Hmong people together. Along with everything else that comes with it.
And the hmong new year will continue into the future...oh yea it's gonna continue into the future but, are we gonna celebrate new year just because it's new year or, are we gonna celebrate it because of our culture. i see our culture slowly dying away, and without a culture, it's just as bad as our people being extinct. people will just look at us as japanese or chinese.
With no one to rebuild our culture and with others manipulating it for profits, who is there left to hold everyone accountable for the identity of the Hmong Culture? If we can't even preserve our own culture, we might as well be proud to say we are not Hmong. It is critically dangerous to get too "Americanized" and not accept any pride and ownership of being a Hmong. For the American culture is the SPEAR to our Hmong hearts. Don't let it be a mistake to forget who you are and where you came from
yes, i agree that i am tired of seeing so many vendors on both sides of the fair grounds selling something, when I'd like to see more history of the Hmong culture and more interactive activities like an actual festival. Why do we stay away and look down at our culture when we don't even fully come to understand it. True that some eldars and leaders have lost their ways and become corrupt.
Comment continued from the first one: There was not enough space^_^!
It is sad that the ball tossing has died down, but that's because the younger kids nowadays, don't really find it fitting to be standing there and tossing balls for a long period of time. Nonetheless, thank you for sharing your video/research.
A really good and informative video. But, I'd like to say that even though our way of celebrating the Hmong New Year here in the States have changed; It has changed to fit the forever changing culture that we now live in. Imagine if there were no food stands, loud music and a wide variety of activities going on, not too many people would care to attend. Entertainment is a huge part of the American culture...and whether we like it or not, we are now, Hmong Americans.
WOW...this is really good! I've never realized the types of food that we sold at Hmong New Years weren't part of us. It was just there. I, also, didn't realize how our New Year celebrations have changed. Thank you!!!
wow nice presentation! keep up the good work! hey by any chance do you know the final song in your guys presentation? i would like to know the song if you can give it to me. thanks.
hey what is the title of the 2nd song on your presentation and the artist I really need it if u can give me the title and the artist I'll really appreciate it thank you!!!
I so sad that it's no longer a new year, but a flea market. I see nothing much about the truth meaning of the celebration. It just a loud noisy competition of business.
nice video..very informative...however though...i don't mind the "constant bombardment" of cultural things for sale...it is one of the reasons why i attend...the great food..along with the newest releases of hmong movies...as long as it relates to hmong...it is fine with me...
My dad told me that in olden new year, there's a pole where guys use to play the qeej and would climb up the pole....There's a true story to it....But wooohh. Go Hmong NEW YEAR...But the real Hmong new year celebration is hu plig at home...
Can someone explain to me when Hmong New Year is? What calender do they go by? I know they do not use the Chinese(Lunar calender). I believe Cambodians, Indians and possibly Arabs/Persians use the same calender system where their New Years day falls somewhere around November. Is that the same as Hmong?
I personally feel that to a certain extent this video is right but then again it has some flaws. There is nothing wrong with the Hmong people selling things. It is a good way of supporting each other's businesses. I'm sure that a good amount of money from the vendors goes toward the people or group that are the founders of the Hmong New Year. I doubt that the Hmong New Year will be a success without the help of people renting spaces to sell their goods.
I like the whole idea of people being creative about the Hmong clothes. The thing that bothers me is seeing it manipulated in a way, which causes people to look down on us. For example, the chicks on HmongHotties. I was shocked and sad to see such beautiful clothes being used in such ways. As for the New Year itself, many people avoid going because of all the violence. Think about it, would you want to be in a place where you feel that you life is or will be threatened?
I agree, the new years celebration has become a marketing machine. There should be only "one" special new year and not thousands... there's no signifance in today's new years anymore.. We've lost touch of what our ancestor's celebration of the new years truly mean...
1:31<<<the second song...i was wondering if anyone know who the artist is? and anyone have that song...greatly appericated if i can get the song and the artist...thanz in advance...
I love how people can make comments on what they consider to be the problems with the Hmong New Year, but if it was actually in their hands to do with it what they think is "right" they couldn't do any better than it already is. All talk and no action. My Dad is the "founder" of HINY in Fresno. You think you can do better, then do it!!!
i don't mean to burst in on your research but the ball toss practice was actually learnt in S.E. Asia. it was created only about 180 years ago. it's actually not practiced amongst the 9 million hmong in china.
Hmong New Year actually consist of an important tree almost like a christmas tree, a huge pole/tree to climb, and walking around the tree and rope. hmong new year has really developed over time and our people have changed a lot.
Very informative info about our new year and cultural. C'mon some of you!! you might feel upset but hey, times change and we must adapt to it. Most important of all never forget who you are as Hmong cuz no one in the world is unique as us...
great slideshow.. its true.. what happened to the courtship and the fun ball tossing, and allthe above that really comes together as "hmong new year"? cant lie, but the food are good, and its a good time to buy new movies and etc but w/ that we are loosing the whole meaning of "HMONG NEWYEAR".. i've notice that the outfits are not dressed correctly, and most of the people there are not even dress in our unique dresses..
GREAT JOB...I LOVE GOING TO THE NEW YEAR...THE BEST THING EVER...And yeah...I was wondering...Who's the singer of the second song and what's the name of it...If you could tell me...That'll be great...Thanks...
Good job with the slideshow, but I think you got some of your facts wrong about the Hmong New Year. The Hmong New Year is a rich celebration of the Hmong culture, but you stated, "Sadly, it has become a market machine." Yes, that "market" factor was added as a component to the festivity of the Hmong New Year, but to cite it as a threat to the Hmong New Year?
Wish the OG dudes that runs the new years weren't so worried about making money from their people and come up with a good publicity about trying to bring back out culture and all. Just sad. Maybe you can do something about it.
Love the slide show... but honestly, there is not much left in the tradition, most kids these days are to Americanized, or domesticated... We've lost the real reason why we gather once a year...
... so what about the other 15%???... are they there to find some friends of benefit???... lol... lol... lol... other than that good job of making this video clip...
*sigh.... OMG that was really good... I really almost cried... I miss seeing Hmong people around... I enjoy it so much thank you for posting such a beautiful clip....^0^
