Mr. Squire is from the UK. I live in Brazil, so I had to find the cd in a Italian site. I ordered the cd that was printed in Japan. It was sent to the USA and them shipped to me. Its a truly case of globalization.
Now that you mention it, it's kind of weird. I love to sing it but I have no idea/ no conscious attention to what the lyrics mean. In general it's a positive message... makes me feel good
I think it's one of those songs that comes to you in a burst of inspiration, so it doesn't really make any sense. Pretty much every Zeppelin song is that way.
Chris Squire is just amazing. Whats more amazing, is that this is the first solo song Ive ever heard from him. I see how he can be a great aspiration to those like "miguelbass"
I don't mean to disrespect you, chamois, but after reading your posts about Chris and that crass comment about his outfit being made out of toilet paper is out of line.
It seems you only liked Squire for the sake of banging him. >:(
Who cares about how he looks or how he dresses. The man's a great talent!
is that brufford back there? cant recall the exact line up for this album but Moraz.
anyways, this is a pretty good album, that Silentely Falling is beatiful, but let me tell you, Squires voice works better as backin for Anderson, it gets so anoying! He should
This time tried not to pay attention to the bassline (difficult!) and i found very interesting how the fender rhodes (Moraz) and organ (Jackman) make this kind of "rhytmic oposition" on the intro and main verses... this is one record that you can find new things in each listen. I recently did a bass cover of it if you want to check. Great great post. Greetings!
hey! im just playing goddamnit. i love chris. just listen to those awesome pick lines. i wish i had money for a rickenbacker or hell just to take up 10 minutes of his time to tell me what his secret is.
I think Geddy Lee from Rush at least equals his bass man... plus all the other stuff he does.. the singing, keyboards, the foot pedals.. he is the man
not taking anything way from Chris Squire he IS amazing
True that! Geddy rules as well! But as far as his originality, I read an interview with Geddy and he counted Entwistle and Squire as some big influences. Squire will never have any of the technical skills of Geddy. But his "Bass singing" style of weaving bass lines in and out of a song structure, to me, is pretty hard to top! Take another listen to "Close to the edge" for an example. But all props to Geddy.
Thanks for putting this up, Squire and Bruford AMAZING!!! Anyone know why Bill left YES? I think Fish out of water is one of the best produced records ever.
Bill left Yes, the first time, because Fripp invited him to try something different, and when Fripp invites you to do something different, you can be certain it's going to be pretty damned different!
Actually, I think Bill left Yes to go on tour with Genesis when Phil had to step up to take Peter Gabirels spot. After the Trick of the Tail tour, Bill was invited by Fripp to recreate Crimson. ( I think, I could be wrong) I smoked a lot pot back then.HEHE
Nope, Bruford left Yes in mid-'72 to go to King Crimson. Bruford didn't perform with Genesis until the '76 Genesis Tour. Wiki makes it pretty clear, if you search both (Genesis and Yes) bands.
I love the way Chris is versatile as a bass player and a vocalist. The way he moves up and down the neck is amazing, and his singing is excellent. I love the harmony he and Anderson created for Yes. By far my favorite bassist
He is Pisces and fish is the symbol for Pisces. He plays bass and bass is also a fish. He spent long periods of time in the bathroom. Bill Bruford said Chris flooded an apartment once.
Because he used to spend so long in the bath, and was consequently late for many a Yes recording session! I recently read that Billy Bruford left Yes partly because he grew tired of hanging around in recording studios waiting for Fishy to show.
I like watching Bruford pretend he remembers what he played. Then he looks at the camera and smiles when he realized he screwed up miming it really bad.
Thanks for posting this. I agree that being a fan of this album is/was a big secret society thing! I just got my turntable working again and this was the first thing I played, boy, did I miss this one! Seeing it is almost funny, did we really think you could dress that way in the real world back then? To those who have to rate players, let's just enjoy 'em all, OK? I love the opening phrases of this one, almost a funk styling on top of the orchestration, now that is original!
I'll stop rating the players if you stop rating the clothes...actually the obsession with looks and standings is lame eh? Should ONLY be about playing enjoyment by player AND listener..and there are so many talented players wasting time on the superficial aspects is just sad.
Now folks, close your eyes... Which well known Geordie bassist copped this vocal style inflexion by inflexion a couple of years later? Guess he must have worn out his copy of FOTW as well.
I bought a Rickenbacker in 1980 to get the crisp clear bass Chris gets... I wore this album out 3 years earlier trying to figure out the lines.. Lucky Seven was fun... But this was a bit more intricate.. My favorite line is in Heart of the Sunrise where he plays a that Bbm descending arpegio in the upper register and then ascends in Dbm with the repeat an octave lower... A perfectly beautiful example of melodic rhythm at its best
In 75 I bought this LP, no the other yes' solo albums. Great memories. First time I see this vid, hard to find the record and the CD in my country, until the magic of this forums.
This is such an obscure album. But, I know a couple who refuse to play it except under the right circumstances, because it is just too personal and intense for them. Kind of funny. But those how know this records are just nuts about it. Its like being a member of a secret club where you all immediately recognize one another by this shared, hidden understanding.
Hate to say it, but I think the video is a lipsynch. Nonetheless FOOW is a stirring solo album from Chris. I just re-acquired the whole album off iTunes and have been playing it constantly. I wish he'd done some more solo albums. IMHO Fish Out of Water hasn't lost any of it's listenability or charm over the years.
Just one of the finest ( and by todays standards) underrated bassists of all time. Bill Bruford helping out on drums (a year or so after he left the band) this footage is about 1974?? I have to say I think Patrick Moraz's hair and sideburns are kickin it. And kudos to the London Symphony?? But the dufus with the hat at the piano has to go. Thanks for posting.
I hear this video is being projects onto 12 meter high screens across third world countries in an attempt to provide them with buckets full of nourishing cheese!
An old friend of mine and I used to joke and say "Fish Out Of Water is the best YES album of all time!"
None of the other solo albums they did in the 70's gave the same satisfaction as YES did as a whole... except for Chris Squires album. They don't call him "Keeper Of The Glame" for nothing. That is why as long as Squire is on the album, it is YES. I didn't care too much for ABWH... but I LOVED Drama!
Seems like running the bridge pickup to a overdriven amp like a Marshall for the grit and the neck pickup to a bass amp for the clean lows would be a start. But the real secret is simple (or not so simple)-how he plays.
According to Squire, the body of his Rickenbacker was shaved down from its original body weight to get rid of a funky paint job he did to it- this changed the tone of the guitar significantly.
I've also read that his Ricky actually has the treble pickup disconnected from the tone controls, so the neck one is the only active pickup. Plus, that isn't exactly the standard issue Rick of it's day. I heard it's some kind of funky export/begginer's model.
Oh well, at least I have a Ricky. I just need new strings a decent amp. But it all really matters in the playing.
Spot on, mate. The bridge pickup is disconnected and the Ricky is an export model (model RM1999, serial number DC127), which he has owned and played since 1965. The RM1999 was a budget, monophonic version of Rickebacker's 4001 stereo bass. This model was imported into the UK by Rose Morris Ltd (hence the RM prefix on the model number) and, according to Squire's official website, was only the fourth bass of its type to be imported into Britain from the United States
"Run With the Fox" was a single released by Chris Squire with Alan White on drums as a Christmas song, which it didn't seem to be. I don't think it was released under the Yes name, but it was recorded while the band was in limbo. It's on the Yes box set that came out in the '90's.
Wow ¡ What a performance and what an outfit, Mr. Squire ¡¡ Are Moraz and Bruford with Chris there ? "Fish out of water" - One of the best prog rock I've ever heard. Squire is still the real YES key-keeper.
You are so right. Did you see the Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford and howe gig, with Geoff Berlin on the bass. Great player but not Squire. You can tell him vocally and Bass(ically) from the other side of town.....
I agree. I have the pay-per-view concert of ABW&H and it doesn't stand up to Yes "Live at Montreux" from 2003. He also does his "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" solo while Alan White practically crushes his drum kit. The two add a great stage presence which was lacking with ABW&H.
...and yet, Jeff Berlin was a (relatively) last minute replacement for Tony Levin, who had played bass on the ABWH album and been touring. He became ill (hepatitis?), jeopardizing the PPV gig, so Berlin did the best he could. Levin was an equal in the sound of ABWH and is sorely missed in the PPV.
Agreed, would have been a totally different show had Levin been able to take part. That guy takes the stage big time. I love Berlin but it was too last minute. He is a great player.
I first saw this video as part of a cinema event which also had a YESSONGS film shown with it. I'm dissapointed to see now that it wasn't as 'live' as I thought it was all those years ago. Good to see it. This clip is available with the Special edition release of Fish Out Of Water, if you can find it. Happy hunting.
Squire is wonderful, and this is a wonderful track, but we're hearing the studio recording tothis video, I think. Is it lipsynched?? Not so much fun to see a "live" lipsynching.
how to do to release a great rock n'roll album without guitar ? listen to "fish out of water" or any E.L.P release !!! that's it !!!!! patrick Moraz is a very great musician too
Do us all a favour and just remove the video - Please.

I just got my turntable working again and this was the first thing I played, boy, did I miss this one! Seeing it is almost funny, did we really think you could dress that way in the real world back then? To those who have to rate players, let's just enjoy 'em all, OK? I love the opening phrases of this one, almost a funk styling on top of the orchestration, now that is original!
paleobass 4 years ago
I'll stop rating the players if you stop rating the clothes...actually the obsession with looks and standings is lame eh? Should ONLY be about playing enjoyment by player AND listener..and there are so many talented players wasting time on the superficial aspects is just sad.

Now folks, close your eyes... Which well known Geordie bassist copped this vocal style inflexion by inflexion a couple of years later? Guess he must have worn out his copy of FOTW as well.

I Like the music of Chris Squire. I like The Fish of the Water. I dont understand why Chris record only one album.

He comes up with the abslolute tastiest bass licks. The hook is the bass line...I love that!
HARDROCKBASS1 4 years ago
Indeed,
I bought a Rickenbacker in 1980 to get the crisp clear bass Chris gets...

This tune is one of my all time faves. Shame, as someone else has observed, that this just ***has*** to be a mimed performance!!!!

Thanks for posting.

kquinn59 4 years ago 2
An old friend of mine and I used to joke and say "Fish Out Of Water is the best YES album of all time!"
None of the other solo albums they did in the 70's gave the same satisfaction as YES did as a whole... except for Chris Squires album. They don't call him "Keeper Of The Glame" for nothing. That is why as long as Squire is on the album, it is YES. I didn't care too much for ABWH... but I LOVED Drama!

How does one acquire this amazing bass tone?
Metalguy 4 years ago
Seems like running the bridge pickup to a overdriven amp like a Marshall for the grit and the neck pickup to a bass amp for the clean lows would be a start. But the real secret is simple (or not so simple)-how he plays.
Markutbe 4 years ago
According to Squire, the body of his Rickenbacker was shaved down from its original body weight to get rid of a funky paint job he did to it- this changed the tone of the guitar significantly.
eirejoe7 4 years ago
I've also read that his Ricky actually has the treble pickup disconnected from the tone controls, so the neck one is the only active pickup. Plus, that isn't exactly the standard issue Rick of it's day. I heard it's some kind of funky export/begginer's model.
Oh well, at least I have a Ricky. I just need new strings a decent amp. But it all really matters in the playing.
Metalguy 4 years ago

You are so right. Did you see the Anderson, Wakeman, Bruford and howe gig, with Geoff Berlin on the bass. Great player but not Squire. You can tell him vocally and Bass(ically) from the other side of town.....
fredzbassist 4 years ago
I agree. I have the pay-per-view concert of ABW&H and it doesn't stand up to Yes "Live at Montreux" from 2003. He also does his "On the Silent Wings of Freedom" solo while Alan White practically crushes his drum kit. The two add a great stage presence which was lacking with ABW&H.
luvofcountry 4 years ago
...and yet, Jeff Berlin was a (relatively) last minute replacement for Tony Levin, who had played bass on the ABWH album and been touring. He became ill (hepatitis?), jeopardizing the PPV gig, so Berlin did the best he could. Levin was an equal in the sound of ABWH and is sorely missed in the PPV.
GBJPhotoWorks 4 years ago
