abolutely brilliant. I was in a class that he tried to teach 2 bars of one of those tunes to (the one that starts after 3:00). We all failed miserably. So, so, so sorry Alasdair!
I have quite a few Alasdair Fraser CDs (unfortunately not the new one yet) and I have learned a lot of his songs by ear, along with my friend who plays the cello. This is the most difficult set I have ever heard him play, and he does it with such skill.
I can't get the hang of the upstroke...there's an album called "First O'The Darkenin" by Shetland fiddler Chris Stout where he does that flawlessly for ages on the title track, while the alto sax plays a melody over the top - it's one of my all-time favourites.
It takes some work, but just concentrate on moving your bow up and down instead of back and forth, and it's not too difficult. Now to be as good at it as he is...that's darn hard. :)
Class - I've been trying to get a cello-playing friend to do some of the stuff on these clips with me, as I know pretty much all the tunes, but she can't make the cello groove like at 3.00 for example, apparently it's pretty hard.
I've got the cello groove figured out just fine, but if she figures out all of Natalie's crazy chord-ness, please let me know... it's overwhelming to know where to start, with all the crazy twists and variations she throws in. We could trade groove for slowed-down chord audio clips.
I saw them at the Highland Games in Lincoln, N.H., this fall and they are terrific. Their album, "Fire and Grace," is my favorite CD. Alasdair Fraser is simply the best Scottish fiddler on the planet and combined with Natalie Haas they are incredible to hear and watch. Thanks for posting these clips!
When were these filmed?? Alasdair still had hair then!!!! It's thinned quite a bit now. lol

To get a start erase thirds from your mind. In hexatonic modal tunes they are inappropriate and in diatonic tunes let the fiddle supply them.
