Well, I'm afraid that isn't really true.
For centuries organized religion has made a huge influence on societies. Over time, notions merely become accepted without proof. If a religion's philosophy and text fosters hostility and demands execution of gay folks then that influence will be felt in even the worst follower and non-believers. The examples are many and quite regular - if one just reads the news.
