  • contact friends in edmonton, with a sled dog, shaved bald with a note scrawld on its side. (and a giant ear grafted on its back, (there how's that one)

  • Oh, no! What happened in Edmonton?! I hope every one is alright.

  • @lemonrind This was the Edmonton tornado of July 31, 1987. Several people died.

  • For the mentioning of contacting friends and relatives in Edmonton at the beginning of the newscast, I assume they are talking about the infamous Edmonton tornado of 1987, since this newscast aired only three days after the tornado happened.

  • What is Tim Weber & Jacintha Wesselingh doing now? Did they get jobs at other tv stations?

  • Apparently, Dave is retiring in March '09.

  • This is CFTO-TV in stereo, channel 9 in Toronto, cable 8!

CFTO was on Paragon Cable in Jamestown at that time, was it?

  • Tim Weber was fired this week, along with roughly 100 other staff.

  • So, where will Tim Weber go now? He's not exactly 30 years old anymore, and newsrooms are looking for these three attributes now: younger, cheaper, and prettier. (Not that Tim Weber was ever a dog.) But then again, the economy's hurting right now, and ad dollars are not exactly what they were for the longest time.

  • Is any video remaining of Tim Weber's weekend anchor partner, Lin Eleoff? I remember when the TelePrompTer came up..."Good evening, I'm (blank)", and Eleoff went blank, rather than inserting her name. Before CFTO, Weber did radio news in the early 80s at CFCF AM 600, Canada's First Radio Station.

  • Well where's the closing?

  • Wow this was aired 24 days before I was born. Cool coincedence.

  • ...and about two weeks before I was conceived.

  • Were you conceived two weeks before Canada's first radio station signed on? haha

  • Look at those ugly sodium lights on the DVP south of Eg - they've replaced those with supposedly "eco-friendly" floodlights. Nonetheless, still a dramatic approach to the DT from the north. Still love that drive.

  • I liked those old lights.

  • Same here, tvlondon. Those eco-friendly lights are just another contribution by the likes of loony lefties such as David Miller. (I hate the guy.) I'm not saying that we should keep our old school Christmas lights running 24/7, but Miller's gone way too far.

  • That theme is strangely catchy. Electronic news themes seemed to be really popular circa 1986/87.

  • Tim Weber is anchoring on CTV Newsnet tonight.

  • this is sooo triped

  • Man I was like only five years old when this was on, but I distinctly remember the drum sound at the beginning and the blue set. In fact, this is the first time I've seen this since the late 80s. Thank you to whoever uploaded this.

  • That CFTO logo during the drumming looks like a cake.

  • I'd like that cake for my birthday.

  • I remember the old drumming theme music. both at the beginning and the end of World Beat News. It's forever embedded in my mind.

  • so do I... I hope WNED can upload an intro from that era. Plus it'd be cool to see one news story from the past covered by different stations like CFTO, Global & City.

  • I agree, I would love to see an old weathercast with Dave Devall writing on the old plexi glass.

  • Speaking of Dave Devall... did you see the old commercial of his from '82 that WNED put up? The guy's hardly changed at all

  • WNED, do you have any other CFTO openings from years like 1982 or '83?

  • The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that I heard this theme somewhere else in the early 90s. It's a long shot, but for some reason I'm thinking MCTV.

  • WNED17 I think we would love to see the closing clips too!

  • Tim Weber still does the CTV News at Noon with Christine Bentley along with Tom Brown.

My Toronto is CTV News. :)

  • I'm not from Toronto, but my Toronto is CFTO News. :P

  • I met Tom Brown in 1991 when he came to my high school for career day. At the time he was the brand new morning host on Mix 92 FM in Regina.

  • Really? Did you get to speak with him personally?

  • Briefly, but I don't really remember what we talked about.

  • Top story is obviously related to the devestating Edmonton tornado from a few days earlier.

  • Tim Weber back then reminds me of Ron Howard on Happy Days

  • I agree with everyone... what a sweet entry!

  • AWESOME! I remember that set very well. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Wow, I remember this set too! What memories!

  • I would be very interested in seeing the close, by the way.

  • Thanks for posting this! I remember that set...
