You have to consider that they have three kids, plus their parents were both fairly wealthy, so they probably helped out. If you think of them having that house since Becky was born, it's understandable that they probably got a decent loan on a house in those days. You have to keep in mind that they also managed to open a bike shop and a restaurant throughout the series despite their "poverty" level. Also, this show was one of the first to feature a real two-income home.

I don't know about Dan's parents, but Roseanne's parents were not really wealthy, they had retired but didn't depend on their children later on. I think that Roseanne and Dan depended greatly on their incomes, their situation wasn't like the other shows where the Mother stayed home and the Dad was the primary moneymaker or if the Mom DID work it was because she wanted to, the Roseanne show was a little bit more realistic,they had bills to pay, three kids and a mortgage on the house.

@berryblitz07 it's based on inflation. it's just the way our money system works, as time passes there are more people, and more dollars out there in circulation, and prices rise because of it.

in 1988 the average home cost $115,000 and now it's $220,000. a meal at a restaurant might be $9, now it's $20.

overall prices have about doubled... but it's balanced out, because people's salaries have gone up too.

so yeah, in 1988 for a lower middle class family, $500 is a serious chunk of money
