@ipodpunker You can use E17 as a desktop... it is very easy to install. I am using compiz as a standalone Window manager... it is not a desktop environment.
@LinuxSpatry i think you are using XFCE desktop environment thats what it looks like ... umm yeah im using XFCE now and loving it alot i'm gonna make a video of my debian / ubuntu XFCE desktop i love it alot better than Gnome 3 and unity i know E17 been using it for many years man i'm a linux expert even though i dont use ARCH lol i do use slackware and redhat or fedora or centos but yeah i use opensuse before and solaris so i know i was just wondering dude thanks for the feedback
@ipodpunker I am no longer using any components of XFCE. I reinstalled Arch Linux and I am using COMPIZ as a standalone window manager with openbox when I wish to shut off desktop effects. I am using Avant as my panel with the cardapio menu obtainable from the AUR.
Hey dude i'm just wondering... can u used gyachi yahoo messenger with arch? i dont know what package it takes like i know its pacman but is it RPM im just wondering don't laugh at me if im wrong because i'm really a Debian user man .. but arch is looks cool man... i can set it up from the grown up but im thinking on switching from ubuntu to arch.
@ipodpunker Arch does not use RPM or DEB but between their respositories and the AUR they have just about every application under the sun.... I have been able to find almost everything.. I am willing to bet they have yahoo messenger, though I do not use it.
@chica476 I do some web based programming... I have many years of experience with computers... I am a former Windows power user... Assimilating Ubuntu came easy for me... I chose Arch as I wanted a faster operating system and I wanted a challenge... I am now learning whar REALLY MAKES LINUX TICK! LOL!
@WWhitegoat I got 4 working computers out of the pile and I upgraded the house computers... I also transitioned all of them from XP to Linux (Pinguy OS) and one of the lighter computers is used as a headless XP machine for powering the MagicJack. I will note that everyone likes how the computers perform faster and they find using them is not hard at all!
Quick question. What partitions did you set up in the Arch install? I recently ran into a situation requiring, make that demanding, a boot partition. It enlightened me to the need for one.
@ralph1bart I used the guided partitioning as I do not dual boot... I defined 36 megs for boot, 2 gigs for swap 30gig for root and the rest to my home directory.
@TheAmazingAtheos I have a whole playlist on pinguy OS that covers everything in great detail... please have a look in my channel, it is easy to find...
@SlaptMan which distro are you using? Most linux distributions offer support for the intel... I have 2 household computers running pinguy os that have intel processors and no driver modifications were required... it just worked!
@LinuxSpatry I am trying to install ArchBang, but I have tried regular Arch Linux and had the same problem.Only diffrence was that in the regular Arch It has my driver on the DVD I just cant activate it or setup the right file.I am working on a old Dell XPS M140 live part of Arch Bang is blazing fast!
@SlaptMan The live DVD of archbang should install everything you need... If the live dvd works for you, then you can expect the same results after archbang installs... I will be doing an install tutorial on this later today if I do not run into any issues with my system...
Why do I need light and small when I'm running a Quad Core at 3.9GHZ with 8GB of DDR3 running at 1800mhz? Roll on KDE 4.8 released on the 25th of this month!! I am so excited!! Hey Spatry! I need some help on ArchLinux. I decided to give it a try but I want to know how to install it with Archbang because Archbang has wifi drivers already installed. I need it to have the wifi drivers installed because my internet only works wireless. So I need you to tell me how to transform Archbang to Archlinux and how to install Archbang. Please SPatry! My ubuntu starts to be slow :D
@josepbuntu You need to know which wifi card your using and find out which drivers are needed, my bigfoot killer network-n 1103 drivers were loaded automatically. Once I figured out how to set up connecting to my wireless router, I was off and running. I've got compiz running on xfce4, for some weird reason, compiz forced openbox to close and return to the log in screen. Upgrade is done, might try avant window navigator, have to find out about which version to use.
Thanks for the reply. Would love to see a video on how it all works and with your "new to Arch" observations. I would like to 'see' how easy is it to install software, tweak, add repositories, etc. Also some videos regarding your experience of 'changing to Arch'. I would like to put my toe in the water with Arch but I need more convincing that the extra speed is worth the grey hairs.
@charliemoss The nice thing is you do not have to add repositories... You have Arch's repository and the AUR (Arch User Repository) which has just about EVERYTHING you can think of... I will be demonstrating this once I get the series launched. I will try my best to cover things in a manner that is easy to understand without getting too technical, just as I have done on my other tutorials available on my channel.
I would love to see a video about the benefits of Arch over a Debian based distro. I know that Arch is fast but everything is a "puzzle to be solved". Arch seems to be the linux equivalent of a stick-shift car. I really want to know more about this distro. Your explanations are clear, without assumptions and without being condescending. Why should I go through the hard learning curve of Arch?
@charliemoss Arch gives you COMPLETE control of your system. You define what you want installed and manually configure them to your liking. A lot of Ubuntu based distributions have tons of software and drivers included, many of which the average user may not use. Some distributions do not perform as well as others because of "Bloat". One big advantage for me is that ARCH has no release cycle, each update gives me the latest stable software. This has been a great learning experience!
Wow...thanks for your reply! Yeah...each time i log into YouTube, i always see what you're up to with regards to Pinguy OS. I stumble onto Pinguy OS about the same time i started watching your shows. I know of Arch, but i don't use - mainly because i got use to using other Linux Distros; such as Pinguy OS.
@WWhitegoat Pinguy OS is a great distribution... I have it running on 3 computers here at the house... I chose to use Arch as I kinda outgrew Pinguy OS and I wanted more of a challenge. Additionally, I had a number of my subscribers suggest that I give it try. As you can see from the level of response this video has received, many of my viewers are eager to see videos covering Arch's platform. I will continue using Ubuntu distros as they are good in their own right.

I still have a copy of Black Beauty and the perfect machine to throw it on... A 686 with 1 gig ram & 1.5Ghz processor...
@LinuxSpatry Hahhahaha believe me I ahve tons of software on me Puppy and yes you can use Slacko 5.31 pae version to use your 8gb of ram or lighthous/fatdog as well which are 64 bit systems. If you want to use compiz just drop xfce on puppy and away you go, I am sitting here giggling because you are going down the exact same route I did buddy, only you are doing it with style, I fell through it lol. Keep going Spatry Love your videos and your attitude, 10/10 buddy.
@LinuxSpatry You would have to compile it yourself but if you ask me nicely.....giggles ill do it for you, please just wait till your ready you are really evolving from a Padawan to a master and its a delight to watch mate. I am always here for you to help in any way I can.
@icyos I always has a little bit of trouble compiling kernels by myself... maybe that has changed by now... I am getting comfortable with the command line...
I'm using aptosid which is also a rolling distro just like Arch. I don't like having to do reinstalls so I decided on aptosid which is Debian Sid based. I've tried Archbang on my old Desktop but couldn't get wireless going. It's a very light distro and I may try it on one of my laptops. Spatry... I'm looking forward to your upcoming Arch videos! Yes I want to learn about this distro :)
@TheGeo913 I was considering Aptosid, but decided on Arch as it received lots of great reviews. Additionally, I like the way Arch presents their documentation. If Debian's website had a better structure for self support, I would have opted for that one.
@LinuxSpatry Well I have to say that the aptosid website has awesome documentation and I haven't had to do a reinstall in over 6 months now which is pretty awesome. I just apt-get dist-upgrade to update to the latest software. That being said I'd still like to give Arch another try because it's also a rolling distro and I like the fact that you add only what you want. I'm gonna install Archbang on a pen drive and try it out again. I may get wireless going on my laptop this time :)
@TheGeo913 I may consider trying aptosid one of these days... thanks for the info.... I never really dug around on the aptosid website so it is good to know that it is well documented... thanks!
Spatry, can you recommend a screen recorder I could use to recorder gameplay and commentary? I want to be able to record my screen, voice, and the game sounds on Ubuntu 11.10.
@CraigTheMusicDude I am using FFMPEG which is a commandline utility to do my screen captures... The latest Kazam screencaster works with ubuntu 11.10 but I cannot guarantee it is effective any longer as the latest update for it was broken when I ran Pinguy OS 11.04 and I could not get it to work at all in Arch.
I'm sticking with Pinguy OS, couldn't get past the pacman 4 pgp errors when it came to doing the 1st update after installing it. Figuring out the wifi connection part was easy. Totally overlooked the part that Compiz could be used as a stand alone desktop environment. Would love to hear how you got around the pacman pgp mess. Might be tempted to give it another try.
@Phanbot01 In the comment below I described how I fixed the issue... renaming pacman.conf etcetera. I will also cover it when in my ArchBANG Bootcamp series.
looks awesome :) can't wait for the tutorials :) .... but hey! are there any setbacks?!! what i mean is if will be able to run all of my applications that i am running now on Ubuntu ?!
@MunzirSuliman if all of the dependencies are met, then yes you can run all of your favorite apps but you will need to install them through Pacman or Yaourt as Arch will not install DEB files.
@Phanbot01 Arch or ArchBANG involves a steep learning curve. I only recommend it IF you really want to know what makes Linux tick and you want an operating system that you are in COMPLETE control of. Spending 6 months to a year with a Debian or RedHat based distro is highly recommended if you wish to attempt arch... If using the command line or reading lots and LOTS of documentation bothers you then you should consider staying away from Arch.
@Dareboy58 The first time I installed ARCH (not archbang) I did use XFCE... When I found out I could run Compiz as a standalone (without ANY desktop environment) I opted for that. I do use openbox when I want Compiz effects turned off...
@HulipillMineCraft I discovered Arch through Distrowatch and I have read a number of reviews on the internet. I even tried to install it as a newbie and ran into some difficulties... I have matured in Linux and I felt it was time to try something more challenging!
@jordanlang2 YES, both ARCH and ArchBANG have wireless drivers... In arch you will have to manually set it up through the command line.... You do not have to do that in ArchBANG
@jordanlang2 I am using openshot and all of my favorite multimedia utilities in Arch... Unfortunately I was not able to get Kazam screencaster to work. (the latest update broke it in Pinguy OS) I am using ffmpeg now which is a LOT better...
@jordanlang2 I am using openshot and all of my favorite multimedia utilities in Arch... Unfortunately I was not able to get Kazam screencaster to work. (the latest update broke it in Pinguy OS) I am using ffmpeg now which is a LOT better...

(the latest update broke it in Pinguy OS) I am using ffmpeg now which is a LOT better... If you want to dual boot with it, you will need to manually configure your drive partitions.
@davorsite I am seeing lots of good suggestions here... I am glad that there is such a good response on this... Arch has always intrigued me, even before I tried Pinguy OS. I decided to try Arch again at the behest of several subscribers. I can see there is a need for someone to put up tutorials on how to do things in Arch.... I am still going to do things in Ubuntu based distros as well... I did not throw away all of my virtual appliances!
You should have a video on maybe terminal commands for us newbies or how about a video on changing your graphic userinterface from the default openbox desktop to a custom look. Just some ideas although you probably got ideas pilled up already.
@Krothie For starters, I will demonstrate how I set up my system to my liking... I will also demonstrate the installation of common window managers and desktop managers...
@blackoutworm Arch is not for everyone... Geeking and tweaking is part of the game! One of the things I enjoyed about Linux (including in the Debian/Ubuntu based distributions) is how it allows the user to have complete control over their system unlike products offered by monopolies.
Arch is a great distro and I'm glad to see you enjoy it. I loved it when I first started running it and I still love it. I wish you luck in your endeavors with it.
Beautiful Review Spatry i love your style and simplicity, Thanks for brief introduction, eagerly waiting for your video review of how to install arch linux and make it work :)))
Which tool did u used to make this video is it recordmydesktop, kazaam or ffmpeg or something else?
@devenroy You will notice a green and a red dot on the top left of my screen... one of them issues a command to ffmpeg to record my desktop and the red button shuts off the recording.... more to follow on that one....
The Arch Wiki is the best Linux documentation that I've ever seen, miles ahead of Ubuntu or Fedora. I wasn't ever able to get gnome installed for some reason though, but now I'm interested in your setup. Can't wait for the tuts!
Excellent, wonderful job on that there, Spatry! I don't think that I will be following suit, but I do find it very interesting to say the least. I'm just waiting for the "dislike" dude to show up. Apparently he's still sleeping in! LOL!!!

@icyos What if I want a PAE kernel with Black beauty? Can I get that as a PUP or will I have to compile it myself?
LinuxSpatry 1 month ago
@LinuxSpatry You would have to compile it yourself but if you ask me nicely.....giggles ill do it for you, please just wait till your ready you are really evolving from a Padawan to a master and its a delight to watch mate. I am always here for you to help in any way I can.
icyos 1 month ago
@icyos I always has a little bit of trouble compiling kernels by myself... maybe that has changed by now... I am getting comfortable with the command line...

I'm using aptosid which is also a rolling distro just like Arch. I don't like having to do reinstalls so I decided on aptosid which is Debian Sid based. I've tried Archbang on my old Desktop but couldn't get wireless going. It's a very light distro and I may try it on one of my laptops. Spatry... I'm looking forward to your upcoming Arch videos! Yes I want to learn about this distro :)
TheGeo913 1 month ago
@TheGeo913 I was considering Aptosid, but decided on Arch as it received lots of great reviews. Additionally, I like the way Arch presents their documentation. If Debian's website had a better structure for self support, I would have opted for that one.
LinuxSpatry 1 month ago
@LinuxSpatry Well I have to say that the aptosid website has awesome documentation and I haven't had to do a reinstall in over 6 months now which is pretty awesome. I just apt-get dist-upgrade to update to the latest software. That being said I'd still like to give Arch another try because it's also a rolling distro and I like the fact that you add only what you want. I'm gonna install Archbang on a pen drive and try it out again. I may get wireless going on my laptop this time :)
TheGeo913 1 month ago
@TheGeo913 I may consider trying aptosid one of these days... thanks for the info.... I never really dug around on the aptosid website so it is good to know that it is well documented... thanks!

Spatry, can you recommend a screen recorder I could use to recorder gameplay and commentary? I want to be able to record my screen, voice, and the game sounds on Ubuntu 11.10.
CraigTheMusicDude 1 month ago
@CraigTheMusicDude I am using FFMPEG which is a commandline utility to do my screen captures... The latest Kazam screencaster works with ubuntu 11.10 but I cannot guarantee it is effective any longer as the latest update for it was broken when I ran Pinguy OS 11.04 and I could not get it to work at all in Arch.
LinuxSpatry 1 month ago
I'm sticking with Pinguy OS, couldn't get past the pacman 4 pgp errors when it came to doing the 1st update after installing it. Figuring out the wifi connection part was easy. Totally overlooked the part that Compiz could be used as a stand alone desktop environment. Would love to hear how you got around the pacman pgp mess. Might be tempted to give it another try.
Phanbot01 1 month ago
@Phanbot01 In the comment below I described how I fixed the issue... renaming pacman.conf etcetera. I will also cover it when in my ArchBANG Bootcamp series.

looks awesome :) can't wait for the tutorials :) .... but hey! are there any setbacks?!! what i mean is if will be able to run all of my applications that i am running now on Ubuntu ?!
MunzirSuliman 1 month ago
@MunzirSuliman if all of the dependencies are met, then yes you can run all of your favorite apps but you will need to install them through Pacman or Yaourt as Arch will not install DEB files.
LinuxSpatry 1 month ago
Have you tried Slackware?
macrokernel 1 month ago
@macrokernel No, I have not... I had a friend recommend it to me years ago, but I was still hooked on windows at that time...
LinuxSpatry 1 month ago
@macrokernel Tried that a long time ago, really turned me off from using linux for a long time.
Phanbot01 1 month ago
@Phanbot01 Arch or ArchBANG involves a steep learning curve. I only recommend it IF you really want to know what makes Linux tick and you want an operating system that you are in COMPLETE control of. Spending 6 months to a year with a Debian or RedHat based distro is highly recommended if you wish to attempt arch... If using the command line or reading lots and LOTS of documentation bothers you then you should consider staying away from Arch.

What is the arch linux your using, I686 or 86x_64? and why you didn't take XFCE4?
Dareboy58 1 month ago in playlist Uploaded videos
@Dareboy58 The first time I installed ARCH (not archbang) I did use XFCE... When I found out I could run Compiz as a standalone (without ANY desktop environment) I opted for that. I do use openbox when I want Compiz effects turned off...
LinuxSpatry 1 month ago
@HulipillMineCraft I discovered Arch through Distrowatch and I have read a number of reviews on the internet. I even tried to install it as a newbie and ran into some difficulties... I have matured in Linux and I felt it was time to try something more challenging!

does it come with wifi drivers because otherwise i can't get them : /
jordanlang2 1 month ago
@jordanlang2 YES, both ARCH and ArchBANG have wireless drivers... In arch you will have to manually set it up through the command line.... You do not have to do that in ArchBANG

@LinuxSpatry Thanks, would you recommend arch bang for dual booting with windows? Does it work with openshot and everything?.

@jordanlang2 I am using openshot and all of my favorite multimedia utilities in Arch... Unfortunately I was not able to get Kazam screencaster to work. (the latest update broke it in Pinguy OS) I am using ffmpeg now which is a LOT better...

Great, can't wait for installation tutorial and everything else about Arch.
davorsite 1 month ago
@davorsite I am seeing lots of good suggestions here... I am glad that there is such a good response on this... Arch has always intrigued me, even before I tried Pinguy OS. I decided to try Arch again at the behest of several subscribers. I can see there is a need for someone to put up tutorials on how to do things in Arch.... I am still going to do things in Ubuntu based distros as well... I did not throw away all of my virtual appliances!
LinuxSpatry 1 month ago
You should have a video on maybe terminal commands for us newbies or how about a video on changing your graphic userinterface from the default openbox desktop to a custom look. Just some ideas although you probably got ideas pilled up already.

@Krothie For starters, I will demonstrate how I set up my system to my liking... I will also demonstrate the installation of common window managers and desktop managers...

looking forward for more updates...

I'll stick with PinguyOS. Geeking and tweaking makes me frustrated and tired of pc:)
Glad you found something that fits your needs though.
blackoutworm 1 month ago
@blackoutworm Arch is not for everyone... Geeking and tweaking is part of the game! One of the things I enjoyed about Linux (including in the Debian/Ubuntu based distributions) is how it allows the user to have complete control over their system unlike products offered by monopolies.

Beautiful Review Spatry i love your style and simplicity, Thanks for brief introduction, eagerly waiting for your video review of how to install arch linux and make it work :)))
Which tool did u used to make this video is it recordmydesktop, kazaam or ffmpeg or something else?
devenroy 1 month ago
@devenroy You will notice a green and a red dot on the top left of my screen... one of them issues a command to ffmpeg to record my desktop and the red button shuts off the recording.... more to follow on that one....

The Arch Wiki is the best Linux documentation that I've ever seen, miles ahead of Ubuntu or Fedora. I wasn't ever able to get gnome installed for some reason though, but now I'm interested in your setup. Can't wait for the tuts!
