For all the people who say these guys have bad tone - blame utube not the Hellecasters. If you are ever lucky enough to see and hear guys like this live you will never be the same after.
apart from the fact that there are 3 really good pro players here who give each other loads of space, there are no vocals to get in the way...just music! Yay
John Jorgenson is the best living guitarist on the planet. Lucky are those who know this - and hopefully some fine day John will get the recognition he has truly earned.
Please tell me why John Jorgenson is not mentioned in the same breath as Luke, Vai, Satriani, Santana and dare I be so bold, Clapton, Page & Beck? JJ is the most versatile guitarist/musician of our age. As great as he is playing here, he can do the same in a variety of genres & on a variety of instruments. To top it off, he is one of the most genuine souls on the planet - the real deal as a human and a musician.
I met John at a small venue in Perth Scotland & he was a very humble & inspiring man...he played a Django medley that was absloute perfection he was so laid back & actually listened to me unlike some guitarists i've met that are famous...only wish i could play half as good as these guys Jerry is my fav tho....lol
For what it's worth I quite like his tone....open and transparent with a nice bit of edge when required.I gotta say I absolutely detest humbuckers though.Lol
@JusticieroDeLaMuerte Yes, they've all got great tone (apart from Danny Gatton who was a great, great player but had a tone like a wasp in tin can) Eric Johnson's slightly over-processed, but it's still a lovely tone. These guys have great tone too - you might be the only person in the world who thinks this is bad tone, but hey the world's about different opinions so you're entitled.
@jakehadlee IMO the sound thin and too crunchy, with no body. They don't sound round. Know what I mean? When I listen to Michael Landau I think "THAT'S TONE, MAN!"
I learn, I aspire, I long to be as great as these Immortal GODS of guitar..And the other comments of others being great...Always remember in Life we Hate what we want the Most of........This may sound silly but don't forget Bucket head who can play with anyone, I know I know from one extreme to the other but they are all PHENOMS in the world of GUITAR..

Wow! Thanks for posting this. I've loved these guys from the first time I heard them; it's a shame they're no longer performing together. I saw John Jorgenson when he came through here a couple of summers back, but he was doing his Django-inspired stuff ( which I also love ). Sure would have liked to have seen these guys perform together--love that one album cover with the 3 guitars casting shadows like gunslingers in the old west :)
WTF who da fuck considers Cobain to be the greatest guitarist? o.O, his songs are all power chord based. Personally i think those guys are insanely better at guitar playing then Cobain, however in my opinion Andy Timmons is the greatest guitarist around (don't hate, just an opinion :))
@Satanhimselv Fair enough. Andy Timmons is a great player, great tone. For me, Will Ray is mind blowing. Between the bender and the slide, I really think he is untouchable.
@mikepowerline Guys let's not waste our time by degrading 3 relatively unknown legends who have p*ssed in more studios than every other mentioned guitarist in these posts has even walked by when we can enjoy what little video there is of them!
What staggers me is the ignorance and stupidity of people saying Curt was a better guitarist - and before you jump down my throat - listen. Curt was an awesome, brilliant, song writer but he was nothing more than average as a guitar player. You can not make objective statements about the work of someone like Curt, whos writing was of a purely creative and song based nature. This kind of music is incredibly technical and these guys are far superior guitarists. It's a totally different thing.
Can't stand the first guys guitar playing, but the second guy I will say has some talent... much MUCH better. Still, and this is jut my opinion, I can't understand why someone would want to play everything this clean? Come one man, give it some dirt, some buzz, just a bit, and it would sound a whole lot better.
OMG Will Ray's tone during sweet dreams... Slides on both hands... What a genius... Really hope they all get back together someday, they are all totally amazing... But GOD DAM, Will Ray during sweet dreams, simply brilliant...
i love the the main line! its got an actual melody!! cant believe im in the best guitar school in the world and only one person told me of these people. its not good lol x
Those are Will's "stealth slides". He sells them on his website, along with an instructional DVD. Well worth picking up a couple. They're pretty cool, and not as hard to use as you might think.
G&L custom made me a Thinline "Tele". The fit and finish is the finests I've seen in 40+ years of playing. The rosewood neck is so smooth and buttery even on my toughest days my hand feels to be floating. I've had three other costly custom "Relics made to high specs. Along w/ many Fenders and a Musicman. Nothing and i mean nothing even comes close
They'd be a pair of G&L "Magnetic Field Design" pickups.
I tried to post a link here but obvious YT didn't like it. Punch "G&L MFD Pickup for ASAT Special" into Google and the first link should be the G&L website.
I can confirm G&L guitars are some of the finest playing/sounding guitars you're ever likely to find. I got a Japanese one, I chose it over the recent made in USA Fenders that I tried out which cost 2.5 times as much...
COBAIN??? seriously?Someone has said he is the best EVER? What a joke! He is not even in the top 100! Yngwie was impressive to watch live and up close when i saw him,but to listen to his albums, they get very boring very fast. These guys are awesome!Still like Roy Buchanan better, and Walter trout.Don't bother to reply and call me a pinhead (or probably worst) it is all just a matter of OPINION!
I think i was at this show, i forget the year but i'm pretty sure it was the Galaxy Theater in Costa Mesa California. It was a great venue for concerts, great sound and every show seemed to be packed. But i guess they couldn't get the acts they needed to stay open or maybe it was poor mgmt. Anyway they closed this year, to bad.
Will & John both had G&L custom shop guitars back then, and were the lead endorsers for G&L. There was a 4th Hellecaster, cant remember his name..dark hair, thin guy, he too was G&L man. Jerry had his own signature series Fender Tele, in fact he had TWO of them, a import and a USA model. He could play kite string strung on a barndoor... what a player. His version of Jerry Reed's "The Claw" was the highlight of their album for me.
These guys are the best, period. If you don't have their albums, go buy them...awesome chops, technique and tone to die for....not to mention listenable, enjoyable melodies. GREAT BAND.
I love his playing, never too much, always with a lot of feeling. And please do not bring up Yngwie here, after 5 minutes I've had it with the same tricks he uses over and over again.John is a inspiration for all of us guitarplayers.
@gereed2 This guitaraist sucks, i'm sorry, but he's way over using that lead line, and it's not even good, I can't stand this type of music, there are 1000's of lead guitarists better then this guy.
@campbellu2002 LOL, this guitarist sucks! I'm sorry but I could play this without any issue, he's playing the same lead line repeatedly! and it's not even a good one. I think Kurt is BY FAR more talented then this NO TALENT ASS-CLOWN. (had to throw in the office space term).
@Megazord24 Really-someone actually brought up Kurt Cobain's name here? His wealth and icon status proves you can be a musical hero, having attained the instrumental skills of a first week, exceptionally lazy guitar student, and the vocal skills of a screaming baby with no interest in learning to talk. Whereas, the Hellecasters are great players in a great band, which I suppose, is a commercial liability.
Jerry Donahue is my personal favorite of the three Hellecasters. His style, tone, the whole nine yards. He is one of my biggest guitar influences. However, in my opinion, Will Ray's performance of Sweet Dreams here is the standout performance of this entire show! His tone, his licks, the whole performance is actually BETTER than the CD.
bit-What a night,nice guys,superb players,Will with the B bender and ring slide,Jerry and his nut bends,and John-Fantastic-these guys are the shit and tasteful,creative,humorous at times,and I really want a 5th album....
Heard Jorgeson and Donaheu before and of course they are great but never payed to much atention to Will Ray before, he´s really amazing, truly a great version of Sweet Dreams, maby better than Buchanan´s, I´m thinking about getting one of those half-slide tubes for my middle finger.
Uh...hello. If you'd watch the entire vid, you'd know that is NOT Danny Gatton with the teal ASAT. 4:38 - 4:58 will explain when he dedicates "Sweet Dreams" to the late Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. Awesome band here.
I just listened to Tommy and Phil Emmanuel's version of this song and loved it...Loved this version also...great song :D lol...does anyone know who wrote it? (Terra Firma that is)
Wow, got a wire for the Hellcasters from a mate and he was right!!,some of the sweetest, tasteful and above all else hot geetar music played with such feeling, its official, I LOVE THE HELLCASTERS, George from Scotland.
The tone they get with their telecasters is fucking sweet. Not sure which the effects the lead guitar uses in BACK IN TERRA FIRME are. Sweet guitar playing.
are there two different ohne filter tapes? i bought one recently at a dollar general recently(the last copy they had!) and they look older. jorgenson played through a matchless amp and donahue played a blue strat throughout the entire show. and jorgenson had glasses on. if this was 94 who knows what year i have?!?!?!?!?and they all had custom fenders with HELLECASTERS engraved on the twelve fret
Well, I got some mixed impressions from this video. The interpretation for Roy's Sweet Dreams is quite courageous (imagine that!) but it was too mechanical, no REAL SOUL in it.
I don't know how you think that this rendition lacks soul. Not only does it pay homage to both the guitarists to whom he dedicates the piece, but he puts his own stamp on it, as well. Pretty soulful playing IMO.
I love these guys! It works so well because all three are so different. I keep wanting to get a Will Ray ASAT until I remember that having the ax won't give me his chops! I'd love to see EJ sit in on this song!
What DVD is this from. I know its not from Live Raw, I have that DVD. I also know this is not available from John Jorgenson's website. Could someone give me more info about this. Great video. Thanks.
What the fuck is this shit?

pioneered.

yngwie with his thousands of notes per minute could not begin to compare to this....

Yngwie's great in his own way. Why do you have to diss him?

These guys are great!!!....but to base a band entirely on a type of guitar is kinda wierd. At least its the Tele!

I work as a Musician in Austin Tx,and
met these guys at SXSW-saw them twice at the
continental club, went backstage talked to them a
bit-What a night,nice guys,superb players,Will with the B bender and ring slide,Jerry and his nut bends,and John-Fantastic-these guys are the shit and tasteful,creative,humorous at times,and I really want a 5th album....

Heard Jorgeson and Donaheu before and of course they are great but never payed to much atention to Will Ray before, he´s really amazing, truly a great version of Sweet Dreams, maby better than Buchanan´s, I´m thinking about getting one of those half-slide tubes for my middle finger.

The teal player is Will Ray
ssilver996 4 years ago
Sadly I think the guy playing the teal asat is Danny Gatton and he left us several years ago, HE WAS TRULY GREAT!,
packingten 4 years ago
Uh...hello. If you'd watch the entire vid, you'd know that is NOT Danny Gatton with the teal ASAT. 4:38 - 4:58 will explain when he dedicates "Sweet Dreams" to the late Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. Awesome band here.

Will Ray plays his signature sparkly tele. C'mon, guys.
Still, all great :)

musicfunkydude 4 years ago
The tone they get with their telecasters is fucking sweet. Not sure which the effects the lead guitar uses in BACK IN TERRA FIRME are. Sweet guitar playing.
spooki123 4 years ago
It's good single coils through a good AC30.
Great tone until the AC30 blows up. Or melts.

There are two ohne filter tapes. This one is the oldest
i think.I recorded them from German television.Forgot when though.
paeper 4 years ago
are there two different ohne filter tapes? i bought one recently at a dollar general recently(the last copy they had!) and they look older. jorgenson played through a matchless amp and donahue played a blue strat throughout the entire show. and jorgenson had glasses on. if this was 94 who knows what year i have?!?!?!?!?and they all had custom fenders with HELLECASTERS engraved on the twelve fret

Well, I got some mixed impressions from this video. The interpretation for Roy's Sweet Dreams is quite courageous (imagine that!) but it was too mechanical, no REAL SOUL in it.
guprheu 4 years ago
I don't know how you think that this rendition lacks soul. Not only does it pay homage to both the guitarists to whom he dedicates the piece, but he puts his own stamp on it, as well. Pretty soulful playing IMO.
Mick175d 4 years ago
I love these guys! It works so well because all three are so different. I keep wanting to get a Will Ray ASAT until I remember that having the ax won't give me his chops! I'd love to see EJ sit in on this song!

JJ is a great guitar player, but he does look like that lion-man who lived underground in that old TV programme from the 80's/90's here!
