  • interesting live performance 1966. The group still wearing suits, incl. Frank Alan, apart from the brand new drummer John Blunt, more vivid than Curtis, but without his high

    vocal contribution.

    Footage from whre and when

    Flemming Gundersen, Denmark

  • Seriously? really? Unbelievable this can't be the right song.

  • superba piesa....

  • aghhh this song bring back memories xx :)

  • Aww I love these old song! I'm only 20 but these are the best songs to listen to in the car! And sing along of course! :D

  • pills for the ills,

    drugs for everybody,

I'll ever ever let you stoned.

  • GEIL GEIL GEIL i was today in Offenbach " Beat beat Beat " and there was the searchers, and this was the first song :D

    AWESOME BAND!

  • 17 people need a soul transplant.

  • Sweets for my sweet, sugar for my honey :)

  • Happy days in Oldham Lancs early 1960s (:

  • awesome we outclassed americans at this they had elvis we had at least 10 more since him dya think thats fair????

  • 16 people didnt swap their sweets.

  • I notice that the Searchers sing - your first sweet kiss thrills me so, but the Driftters sing - your tasty kiss thrills me so, just an observation..

  • rumjockey firstly yes very interesting but seriously if your flat mate was date a star why didn't u meet him of go out and see his gig?

  • i heard htis at the cavern!!!

  • Das ist Musik vom Allerfeinsten . Klasse!!!!!!!!

  • McNally's Telecaster guitar is the epitome of the Merseybeat driving guitar.

  • Liverpool merseybeat what a sound !

  • This is a nice cover of a great song. I do think the cover by the group, "The Riddles ",out of Elmhurst Illinois is far and away the better version. I wonder where they are now?

  • Is ok to be 15 and listening to this XD

  • @Reven2000jf lol im 15 your safe

  • @BackInAGiffy Thank God just looks like we both have good taste in good music

  • @Reven2000jf yeap i don't hate all modern music i like alot of variety but the old stuff is unbeatable

  • Nice video and quality thanks for uploading.

As an aside the producers of TV series Bones on TNT should do a funny episode about the Dr Sweets character (psychlogist) to this tune.

  • On the original record Tony Jackson was lead singer as he was on their first 3 hits before he was booted out..

He was paid out with 6000 pounds and wasted it all forming a new group and making a 'single 'but ended up back as a fireman on British Rail.I've got the single somewhere.I must have a look for it!

  • Alway thought Mike came from Kirkdale in Liverpool and played in unknown groups there. He met up with John from Bootle and they would go to the Cross Keys pub in the city centre, they eventually teamed up with Chris and Tony.

  • Im 19 and I LOVE this song :) Its one of my fav songs along with The Ronettes- Be Mine Baby

  • Im only 28 so was never around to hear these songs but i still remember them from my childhood from my parents playing them. Older songs were so much better than present day crap!

  • @HeliumFreak17 you got that right

  • @HeliumFreak17 ... thinking, you know how right you are... i'm only 66 ;-), this was my teenage time. Thank you, Lord in heaven, for this gift you have given to me. AMEN !

  • @HeliumFreak17 And they were that good live

  • @HeliumFreak17 For someone your age to say that, you must be a pretty incredible kid! Check out a song called "Abba" by a band called the Paragons. It's on youtube.

  • Fantastic!!!

  • Oh, to have these days back again!!!

  • One of the top 3 'beat' groups of the early 60's along with the Beatles and Gerry and the Pacemakers. Of those three, they were my favourites.

  • this song ist soo great

  • It's great seeing these boys perform! And watch Frank slap that bass!

  • this song does not use paralell structure. It should be "sweets for my sweet" "Sugar for my sugar"

  • sweets for my sweet, sugar for my COCK

  • rumjockey, I triedto send a message to thank you for posting that story, but your account was closed. So if you ever check back here, I would be very happy to hear the great memories you have. I live in the U.S. and always thought The Searchers never received the respect they deserved here in the states and I don't know why . Thanks again.

  • Along with Manfred Mann the very sound of the sixties

  • 11 people don't have a sweet tooth.

  • @iw32 11 emos must have come by

  • What I like is this is a live version of the song and sounds like the studo...

  • Does anybody remember Tony Orlando did a cover version of 'Sweets For My Sweets in disco from his 1978 Casablanca Record album 'I Got Rhythm?' Great find both songs, and artists!

  • @xEgZxViPeRz - It is played in The key of C. Chords are C, F & G all the way through.

  • just heard it today on the radio

  • The Searchers were absolutely the best. Their music brings me back to my teenage years. I love their music.

  • Comment removed

  • A Very Good band, I Remember Well. The Days When The Audience Clapped at The End Of Every Song And The Band Stepped Back And Bowed.Just A Matter Of Respect To The Audience. If You Ever See McCartney now On TV Or Live He Still Takes A Bow.

  • I love this....just for John Blunt's jumper.

  • The line up is Mike Pender and John McNally (both original members) ; Frank Allen (joined '64 from Cliff Bennett's Rebel Rousers and his voice features strongly on When You Walk In The Room). Drummer is John Blunt - with them for a few years only when Chris Curtis wanted to give up touring and concentrate on record production. Mike left simply because he wanted to go it alone and tours as "Mike Pender's Searchers". A quality voice but their act moved up a gear with Spencer James's arrival.

  • I L♥VE THIS S♥NG !! <3

  • Hot Boys!!!

  • These guys are damn good.....and have a long list of very good songs....a bit under-rated in my book....

  • @biskitlee Agree-Should be in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

  • It looks like all the band members have changed! I can't respect a band like that!

  • @pds3939 You're wrong. John McNally founded the band (he's in the middle) and is still with the band. Frank Allen, the basist, joined in 1965 and is still with the band. He may not be original but he was with them during their prime. Vocalist Mike Pender quit in the mid 80's to go solo. Their current vocalist has been with them since then. John Blunt, the drummer in this video, was their second drummer. They've gone through two more since and are now on drummer number five.

  • da sieht man mal wieder das auch alte lieder echt klasse sein können und das is ein echter ohrwurm ;-)

  • my first ever record i bought, many have followed

  • Can't find any Searchers footage featuring Tony Jackson.

  • @Strawberry7Lynn a couple of people have the clip of needles and pins with jackson up -try the videojukebox

  • Très bon groupe de rock n roll style merseybeat.

A mon avis ils auraient du avoir la meme popularité que les Beatles et plus avec certains morceaux de leur répertoire

  • Chris made the Searchers, without him, sadly zero.

  • Old favorite from the 60:s

  • I loooovee iiT ! ♥ *________*

    <333333333333333333333333333

  • I like this very much. I`m too young to say that I have enjoyed in those times and music, but I can say that I miss them even if I never felt them!

  • Chris curtis :D miss you

  • The drummer is actually related to my nana :)

  • @IS1lentz .... good drummer ... but .... just doesn't even come close to chris curtis's talent .... the new guy plays too much like keith moon, can't sing, probably doesn't contribute in song writing ..... no personality .... and drumming doesn't match to 90% of the searchers songs that we've come to love through the years!

  • bad

  • on the cool scale this rates very high. is it tony or frank here ?

  • Saw them live almost fifty years ago in Liverpool. A fantastic band. Memorable tracks.

  • GENIAL!!!

  • Obviously, the drummer is no Chris Curtis, but Tony, Frank and John are doing a great job here!!! The Searchers were a totally stunning band -- looks and talent -- the early music they did is timeless! RIP Dear Chris. Nice vid!

  • @ChrisCurtisFan Haha -- I meant to say Frank, not Tony. Frank is awesome here. I have always wished there were 5 original Searchers: Chris, Mike, Tony, John and Frank!! 5 perfect men!

  • @ChrisCurtisFan with the greatest of respect to you and chris , this drummer is fine , not gonna say better or anything like that .every drummer is different but this guy does lovely fills and makes it flow well.and you never mentioned his keith moon mannerisms either , any drummer who plays this kind of stuff is great including myself .

  • @MrLaydownsally I agree with you the drummer and the band really rock here -in spite of a having a rinky dink drum kit and amps compared to what a band would have today.

  • i have ben e kings version

  • I wasn't around in the Sixties but from what I seen & herd of it the music was great as i was brought up on it, i like the Seventies becouse I was in that decade my first memors of great shows Like Dr Who with Tom Baker Top Of The Pops

& Like the Eighties as grew up in that Decade I would have to say 60s 70s &

80s were the best for music really but that is just view as for the 90s well there some thing back I'd rather forget about

  • depends on what you listened to. if you listened to all that spice girls and east 17 rubbish the 90's music was shit. if you listened to the likes of ocean colour scene, blur, supergrass pulp etc it wasnt so bad

  • Loved them!

  • I do wish these kind of songs were played more. Maybe I should retune my radio.

  • @SpringMum how cool would it be to retune back in time ;) back to whatever music era ya wanted hehe id fekking love that! x

  • @SpringMum .... mike seems like he was the main cog in "the searchers". great musician, very good singer, very good composer too, i assume. did the rest of the group dislike him later on, or what? if they did, they were probably jealous cause of his talent ... or was he vain? .... oh .... and what the heck is a flate?

  • @frizzlefrap No idea about internal politics. I suspect a flate is a posh flat (appartment) :P Sweet for my sweet sugar for my honey, a dentist rubbing his hands in glee!!

  • @SpringMum More like the stations have to switch cds or tapes. I'm sure your radio is fine. Pity that crap comes out of it instead of great music like this. If your radio is old I am sure it too feels bad playing the trashy music of today.

  • i kinda like this song and i think people that don't appreciate songs like this or juz turn them off becuz they're in a black and white pictures are idiots

bands like this one are the start of almost half of the music if not more

  • The only band to truly rival the Beatles....They could do it all....Liverpool skifle, folk, R and B and country....

  • this maybe no interest to anybody but I would like to share it, Mike Pender was a friend of mine in the 60s his sister was dating my flate mate, Mike lived in Romford Essex, and was a garage mecanic before going full time with the Searchers

I have great memories of them times at the pub in Dagenham, cant remember the name, if anyone has info would like to hear......

  • That's worth sharing. I find it interesting whenever someone can relate something personal.

    :)

  • The Roundhouse?

  • It doesent sound familer, it was a very large pub like a big house with large chimneys, in Heathway. had all the top bands and singers of the 60s.

  • @rumjockey are you sure? I thought Mike Pender was in Liverpool for his early years before the Searchers went full time. Tony Jackson lived in Romford after he left the Searchers and his solo career flopped. He was a ticket clerk a Romford Station.

  • @rumjockey I have a feeling the pub was the "Merry Fiddlers." I saw many great bands there in the 60's. I lived in Romford also at the time.

  • I lived in a flat at 127c Corbets Tey Rd in Upminster in the 70s, and the previous occupant of my room had been Tony Jackson, who was friends with the hairdresser who owned the flat.

  • @rumjockey In that era the Merry Fiddlers at Becontree Heath had groups...I was too young to get in but I lived over the back so I heard it. LOL

  • @rumjockey did mike penders sister end up marrying your flate mate? (: and thats pretty cool

  • Damn...for a(nother) late 70's born guy this sounds (once again) almost surreal... London in the 60's...a forever lost treasure?????????

  • @gillesbertacco mate this is MERSY BEAT! LOVERPOOL!

  • great.....the searchers :)

  • Great...haven't seen this before...thanks

  • the line up on this is Mike Pender (lead vocal0 Frank Allen Bass John McNally guitar John Blunt Drums

Blunt left in 69 Pender left in 85 but still performs as Mike Pender's Searchers or just as Mike Pender. McNally and Allen go out as The Searchers along with Spencer James and Eddie Rothe

  • I've just got home from seeing The Searchers live in Motherwell, Scotland and I must admit....they were OUTSTANDING!!! I was made to go and i'm so glad i did now...i'm 29 and found them amazing!! Keep up the good work guys!! :D

  • tony jackson and chris curtis have passed away unfortunatley . they both left the group early on in the bands history . sang with the searchers and i have seen them approx 4 times and also saw tony jackson circa 1991/2 at the renwick theatre , ombesley , worcester . arrgh happy days all i had to worry about in those days was keeping my astra gte clean and paying mom £25 a week board , oh happy days.........by the way who is the drummer in the clip ? brill player

  • yer there still going strong, but one is brown bread now,not sure witch one thou,i sawed them two years ago in dartford kent,u.k,i went with me 5 years old dust bin lid,he loved it two.

  • Are these guys still performing ??

  • Notice the drummer totally doing Keith Moon mannerisms or was it the other way around???

  • wish i was alive and in a band in the 60s.

  • oh look its the fat rebel dance and hand pump lol

  • My favorite songs from the early 60's

    brings back some great memories.......

  • It may not be all time favorite tune of the early 1960's, but the Searchers' remake of the Drifters tune reaches a heights that so few remakes do reach. The Searchers' "Sweets For My Sweets" I think surpassed the Drifters' original version (even though I love both versions, the Searchers just added more spice -- yes, pun intended). (And yes, I'm American).

  • They did sweet nothings the brenda lee song and does she really care for me ruby and the romantics [ both groups on kapp records] if you ever heard the original version of dont through your love away by the orlons youd weep and wail over the oriental sounding piano riff that the searchers did on guitar.

  • You're correct Syndicate93,what a sad day when Chris Curtis wasn't banging it out for the magnificent Searchers any more.

  • The Searchers = Chris Curtis, Mike Pender, Tony Jackson and John McNally. According to me this is the best and true searhers members :)

  • Finally, a 60's band that could actually play live. I'm impressed!

  • hahah lots could, check out all the beat beat beat live videos, most of them are pretty good

  • True. But so many of the "live" performances on UTube have been taken from Hullabaloo and American Dance Band, where everyone just lip-synched. I was getting jaded! :)

  • beat beat beat and the early beat club (both German shows) were almost always live. You might also want to look up the 1964-66 NME Pollwinner's concerts and Ed Sullivan shows.

  • it make's me happy, always! I like to smile.

  • Ich habe die Jungs mal live gesehen und anschließend mit ihnen gefeiert in Hamburg.Einmaliges Erlebnis nette Jungens.

  • Frank Allen's taken over on bass. Who in the heck is on drums? Reminds me of Keith Moon!

  • John Blunt-played 1966-1969

  • Thanks gibb253! :)

  • John was awesome on drums. He also played on Have You Ever Loved Somebody and Take It or Leave it. They just couldn't rein him in!!

  • my band are supporting them on july the 17th!!!!!!

  • cool :)

  • Very GOOD song!

  • I love this :D

    and I am 18!

  • he looks a bit like john lennon at this time :D

  • Yes good old Mike Pender from The Searchers.

Still Rocking today with his own band:

    Mike Penders Searchers

  • wow I love his voice Yay

  • it's a bit beatles.

when they sing sweet for my sweet suger for my honey it's a bit paul mccartney.

    great band.

  • Lol, the audience r in a coma

  • special pt otilik

  • Big tune! big gun shot! this guy could clash man like papoose and jada for fun

  • Love it.

  • fantastic, i like it

  • Brilliant harmonies, as ever

  • é um hino verdadeiro ao pop original dos anos 60!

Parabens, Searchers, que ainda continuam no activo!

  • like it.

    love it.

    adore it.

    it's so sweet... x)

  • Great song1 nice memories

  • Muito bom esse video!!
