My ole' home town. Still an great American city. My location now is 80 miles eastward in Indiana. I dunno', I like and miss all the culture and the energy of the City with broad shoulders, but not all the hustle and congestion. Thankfully, The Chicago, South Bend South Shore Rail Line brings the city to within a two hour train ride without having to sing those Dan Ryan Express blues.
My mom was in high school in mid 60s and knew these guys who sang this song. They wanted her to be in the band, but my grandma said she couldn't quit school!
The food is superb, but the city is as corrupt as Mexico, and the People's Republic of Chicago has banned the Second Amendment. I'm glad to be out of Illinois. This is a great song.
I live by the Lake Shore Drive and I can see it by my window day and night. It's wonderful! Every morning looking that road down there, I always fall in love more and more for Chicago, my moça bonita!. Thank you, my friend, for posting it.
Nice video. Thanks for posting. Although I do wonder about the 'lsd' and 4 in the morning. I mean the only reason I ever called it that was because I knew what acid was. ;)
back in the mid 60s me n my gang were hanging out in south st.louis when we got the news that a former school chum had got killed trying to hop a train up in oak park so we hoped in my 60 ford drop top and headed north to pay our condolances..we got into town bout 3am,,we were greeted by them famous "BLUE LIGHTS"the car had bogus plates and we had booz but when we told the officer why we were there he let us go,we paid our respectes to the kids family then headed south on LSD,what a trip
In Chicago, the city was in about 24 inches of snow on February 1, 2011. Essentially, the city was all white on the first day of black history month. Chicago is one hell of a town.
I have repeatedly THANKED my parents for leaving their small central Illinois hometown- I know it was hard for them to leave family- but they took 3-yr old me and moved to Chicago so my Dad could work in the freight yards making good money and provide my siblings and I a better life and education than he had. God bless him- he spent 40 years working the night shift OUTDOORS in that COLD, GRAY, WINDY FOG and never complained! We loved Chicago and always will! Thanks for posting this song!
I am a former Milwaukeean who spent a lot of time in Chicago during my college days and I loved this song back then, and it still runs through my mind today... brings back so many great memories! ...from a "Chicagoan at heart"! :) Just had an urge to listen to this song again after all these years!..thanks for having it on youtube so I can get my 'fix"!
I got it and never needed LSD to make my Chicago life! Drove an ambulance forever there~ Visit every year--can't immagine any other city-love this song! CJ
@sumuthaguy Thanks for the heads up. Nice interview and Skip is just like I imagined the group to be; guys you would want to sit down with at a Chicago dive enjoying a beer and great conversation.
There is something magic about LSD going either north towards dtwn or south towards dtwn. Lake on one side, the tall building coming towards you as you drive; what a ride. LSD and the Park that lines it all the way north or south is there because Montgomery Ward said no to trains along the lake. Ward said, there needs to be space for people. And what a space it is.
This song reminds me of when me and my friends would go to Chicago back in high school and take Lake Shore Drive. There is something magical about the City at sunset on a warm summers night with a nice breeze blowing.
Too many hipsters n yuppies in Chicago. Just visted Nashville and had more fun there than my own city. Too many snobby people in Chicago, I think if you go there enough you guys would agree. Still love the CITY itself though. Beautiful.
@mhregan I have played with Jim and John Jeremiah quite a few times, though not in years. It's incredible how versatile they can be. I'm with you, I wish they had more music on here so the rest of the world could understand as well.
Reminds me of a guy I was with for a while. I took Lake Shore Drive to go see him, and it was the prettiest drive. That was in the late fall and early winter, I wonder what it would have been like in the summer.
One of the very best.... from St Louis here. This was my Chicago theme song 11 years when I was trying to move to Chicago. Wound up in LA. No regrets, but...damn!
If I remember right, the Blizzard of '69 was worse than '11 and certainly worse than '07. LSD, along with Michigan Avenue and other big streets, was closed for some time back in '69. I seem to remember snowmobiles had many streets all to themselves. And the people of this great city bounced back like they always do.
People might complain about the winters here, but I actually have a lot of good memories from winter. Building snow forts and having snowball fights as a kid, playing football in the snow, going sledding (or drunken sledding in high school), etc. Hell, we just had a blizzard here 3 days ago and the next day I got together with a bunch of friends and we had a game of snow football in nearly 2 feet of snow. We're all in our late 20s and early 30s, but we had so much fun being kids again for a day.
@1967mustanggta Well, that blizzard got me thinking about this song. Grew up there and then, and now way over in Tokyo but it's 55 F here fortunately.
I miss you. Buddha I miss you!!! I miss you Manny's- the greatest eatery on the planet (for meat lovers!). I miss you Portillo's- with your awesome fries and the italian beef with sweet and hot peppers! I miss you Lou Malnati's- greatest pizza on the planet. I always tell people you'd eat two slices and not move for a week, but it was worth it!
Now pack up your shit and move west. We have everything better than the midwest- except the damn food!
We'd meet at R.J. Grunts, where $7 got a beer and a burger, the waitress with the Farrah Fawcett hair was a doll. Then we'd hike up to Park West to see Steve Goodman, or to Second City to see Jim Belushi and chat with him in the bar afterwards. There'a an October chill in the air. And this was on the radio as a new song. Could it get any more prefect than this? I feel bad for anyone who did not have this era as theirs.
Thanks sooo much, paulz5, for posting. This soft sounding song reflects the warmth of the majority of Midwesterners. My fabulous friends & I would head into the city via this special road with "water on the drivin' side." Now happily married to a wonderful man with 2 lovely children, which I wouldn't give up for anything, I still enjoy the memories of my single days in Chicago of which Lake Shore Dr. was a major part. PEACE TO ALL.
couldnt wait to leave south suburbia in 79, being a 3rd gen irish catholic and went to ntc san diego and on a carrier wespac. seen alot of the world, good and bad, but chicago was always the yard stick. as a poet once said, loving chicago is like loving a woman w a broken nose. orange county is home now, but i remember those misty mornings as a child, i still dream about that...god i miss it.
couldnt wait to leave the area back in 79. orange county home now, but as a poet once said loving chicago is like loving a woman w a broken nose. love hate relation ship cept for the white sox. fdoody61@hotmail.com
I love this song, then and now. It had slipped from my memory until recently. Thanks to Youtube, I've been able to hear it again. I lived in Chicago from August of '69 until December of '94. I now live in Austin, TX. I was 14 when this song came out. Songs can capture a moment in your life and bring memories flooding back when you hear them again.... this song does it for me. I made thousands of trips up and down Lake Shore Drive in 25 years. The images here make me miss Chicago.
Certain songs, classic songs, epitomize a particular time in your life. This is definitely one of them. I remember we'd get off work ot midnight, go to The Little Corporal or Olivers for beers and burgers, then catch the Playboy all night show at the Playboy movie house(now The Surf) at Dearborn and Division. We'd smoke some doobie while watching the flicks and when we got outa there at 4:00 a.m. drive north on LSD just as the sun was coming up over Lake Michigan. Man, it never got any better.
I used to live in Lakeview and sometimes couldn't find parking on my street. I'd leave Post-It notes on the inside of my door to remind me of where my car was. One day my brother came to visit and saw an note that read, "Car on LSD." He was a little worried about my car's drug habit until I explained that I had to park on the inner drive that day.
An Illinois boy who found this album for $1.99 in a used album store in Colorado - love this song along with Long Time Gone. lots of 'ongs' in that sentence. Haymarket Pub and Brewery opening soon! Rock on Pete. dg
@upabittoolate - it is at a friend's house who still has a turntable. Not out of the realm of possibility. As long as I can transfer the songs - that is what I want more than the album. I am bummed that Long Time Gone is off youtube (the pics are great and the song is fabulous) dg
the line about driving down Lake Shore Drive at 4 AM is so true, I love driving down LSD early in the morning when no ones around, its so peaceful, as is the rest of the city, its so great, I love Chicago and miss every moment I'm away from it
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Chicago looks so nice in pictures. But in person, you get to experience the real Chicago... the ugly racism, the ghettos on the south side and the west side, the awful climate, and the corruption from top to bottom. It's a great place to leave behind though!
@13Chigirl 1973 the year this song came out, was my 1st year in Chicago-I was 19 and was there till 2006! (except for 1978-84 in SF, but I moved back in '84) what can I say? I know what it's like for a city to be 'tugging on your sleeve' as Sinatra says. I still have not written off another return and I am not a spring chicken. (I'm in Seattle now).
@13Chigirl So true, says another expat Chicago girl, born on the Near North Side and now many years and thousands of miles away. You can take the girl out of Chicago, but you can't take Chicago out of the girl. Chicago is always going to be a part of who you are.
@13Chigirl - Right you are! I may have had to leave Chicago, but it never left me, especially all the warm, wonderful people I knew there. I have (still!) a copy of this 45 which I had to a law office on LaSalle Street to get because AHJ were in litigation at the time. How great to be able to hear it any time on YouTube. Best Wishes Fellow ChiGirl!
I love Chicago & this song!! Radio stations around here play it all the time & I have it on my iPod. Okay, I may be a little biased since I live in Chicagoland...but what a great city!!! =)
THANK YOU, paulz5 for the great images of the Windy City as it is, and as it was. The Horse & Buggy Photos of Lake Shore Drive are ESPECIALLY COOL! I don't much care for the possible drug references, so I just ignore them. And Excellent tune is an excellent tune. Peace & Love to ALL.
@GPS0159 - Hello. Frankly, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. Not sure of your age, so I'll tell the short story just in case. When this song was issued in the early 70's, radio stations could only play an edited version leaving out the line about "slipping on by on LSD." To get a copy of the 45 record, I had to go to their attorney's office on LaSalle Street since the record couldn't be sold in stores. The ROAD & SONG ARE GREAT! Drugs are not. Peace to You!
@mjcamck71 Typical adults. When I lived on Lake Shore Drive (1969,1970), I loved telling people I lived on LSD. It's what we called it but the old folks (Yes, I'm one of those now), took it as a drug reference. May I never get that old!!!
@bratface52 - Hello. It must have been great living on the road itself. So many words, or even letters, seem to have double meanings. I wish people would cease looking for devious "drug" references in so many innocent lyrics. In this case, I suspect the lines were tongue-in-cheek as AHJ were well aware of the drug connection. Still, L.S.D. is the legitimate nick name and I think it's fine they utilized it. Wonder whatever happened with the court case? Peace.
@mjcamck71 Yes, my time on LSD was fun. I don't remember the court case and completely forgot about this song until I typed in Lake Shore Drive a few months ago just to see it and up pops the song!
@bratface52 - Hello. AHJ sued whoever it was who stopped the sale of the records which is why I had to go to their lawyer's office to get a copy (after the local radio station informed me it was the only place to get them). Just FYI. Thanks for answering. Peace to ALL.
@JimW1942 - Hello. It would seem then that Albums with the LSD term were allowed. My 45 had it, but, as I mentioned above, I had to go to their attorney's office on LaSalle Street to get a copy as they weren't allowed to sell them at that time. Thanks for the information. Peace to ALL.
Hearing this song for the first time picked up my entire night, the singers have a haunting way of staying with you, I'll have to look into them more.
@jbdmed Sorry i NEVER remember the message box here =) Yep, that'd be him (and Teddy of course), we've been trying to get him online FOREVER, he's too busy running round Lost Wages to care about the internets... We made him check out this vid & some old Rotary Connection vids here while we were there with him a bit ago. He's doing GREAT!
I've been in sunny south Florida for 3 years, but now after watching this video I'm homesick for my Chicago. I had a strange dream last night. I dreamt there was a heavy snowfall in south Florida and I was having fun throwing snowballs. Maybe the dream means I actually miss the terrible Chicago winters.
@bobx2x2 When I lived on LSD I remember looking at Belmont Harbor from my window and watching the waves under the ice - mighty cold!!! I think I'll stay here in Texas and just remember the winters! I did love LSD and lower Wacker Dr (Green City), though - any time of the year.
Love this!!!

@upabittoolate - it is at a friend's house who still has a turntable. Not out of the realm of possibility. As long as I can transfer the songs - that is what I want more than the album. I am bummed that Long Time Gone is off youtube (the pics are great and the song is fabulous) dg

Chicago looks so nice in pictures. But in person, you get to experience the real Chicago... the ugly racism, the ghettos on the south side and the west side, the awful climate, and the corruption from top to bottom. It's a great place to leave behind though!

chicago girl here & I am so proud to say that!!
I've been in AZ now for 24 years and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think about that beautiful, amazing, delicious, awe inspiring city!
No matter wher I live, I always carry Chicago with me.

@13Chigirl I understand. I have been in Arizona for 15 years and dream of going back every day. I worked on LSD for years. Still miss it.

@mjcamck71 what drug references?
GPS0159 1 year ago
@GPS0159 - Hello. Frankly, I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. Not sure of your age, so I'll tell the short story just in case. When this song was issued in the early 70's, radio stations could only play an edited version leaving out the line about "slipping on by on LSD." To get a copy of the 45 record, I had to go to their attorney's office on LaSalle Street since the record couldn't be sold in stores. The ROAD & SONG ARE GREAT! Drugs are not. Peace to You!
mjcamck71 1 year ago
@mjcamck71 Typical adults. When I lived on Lake Shore Drive (1969,1970), I loved telling people I lived on LSD. It's what we called it but the old folks (Yes, I'm one of those now), took it as a drug reference. May I never get that old!!!
bratface52 1 year ago
@bratface52 - Hello. It must have been great living on the road itself. So many words, or even letters, seem to have double meanings. I wish people would cease looking for devious "drug" references in so many innocent lyrics. In this case, I suspect the lines were tongue-in-cheek as AHJ were well aware of the drug connection. Still, L.S.D. is the legitimate nick name and I think it's fine they utilized it. Wonder whatever happened with the court case? Peace.
mjcamck71 1 year ago
@mjcamck71 Yes, my time on LSD was fun. I don't remember the court case and completely forgot about this song until I typed in Lake Shore Drive a few months ago just to see it and up pops the song!
bratface52 1 year ago
@bratface52 - Hello. AHJ sued whoever it was who stopped the sale of the records which is why I had to go to their lawyer's office to get a copy (after the local radio station informed me it was the only place to get them). Just FYI. Thanks for answering. Peace to ALL.
mjcamck71 1 year ago
@mjcamck71 I still have my copy of the 33 rpm album and it contains the LSD reference in the lyrics.
JimW1942 1 year ago
@JimW1942 - Hello. It would seem then that Albums with the LSD term were allowed. My 45 had it, but, as I mentioned above, I had to go to their attorney's office on LaSalle Street to get a copy as they weren't allowed to sell them at that time. Thanks for the information. Peace to ALL.

I've been in sunny south Florida for 3 years, but now after watching this video I'm homesick for my Chicago. I had a strange dream last night. I dreamt there was a heavy snowfall in south Florida and I was having fun throwing snowballs. Maybe the dream means I actually miss the terrible Chicago winters.
bobx2x2 1 year ago 4
@bobx2x2 When I lived on LSD I remember looking at Belmont Harbor from my window and watching the waves under the ice - mighty cold!!! I think I'll stay here in Texas and just remember the winters! I did love LSD and lower Wacker Dr (Green City), though - any time of the year.
