  • You obviously don't know anything about antennas. You can't use 162 mhz to demonstrate antennas tuned for the ham bands. The resonant frequency is way too far off. You needed to do that demo on the correct frequency band. The reason that it worked better on 162 is because it was 5/8 on two meters and near 1/4 wave on 162 mhz.

  • I've got one of these and he's right, it's the best antenna I have for my talkie. They are a little big and bulky but if it is signal you are after, this is #1. Great video! 73's KA0ZIS

  • May i ask. I am 14 looking to get my HAM license in San Francisco area. I was wondering is there a way to attach and external antena to a handheld. I was just curious for when i am at home and if i want better range. Is this possible and how. Thanks you.

  • @CalAir1545, I guess if it has the right connector it will.

  • @CalAir1545 By using the right coax/jumper cable, you can attach your ham handheld to even the largest base antenna. However, you will still be limited to 5w power or less (depends on radio).

  • There's no excuse for operating without a license. You can get technician by passing a 35 question test, and if you know a little about electronics, you ought to be able to study for the test in a week.

  • Hello: I was looking at videos on UTUBE to-night and came upon your video.I'm VE3HJP the Ham who first developed the telescopic 5/8 back in the seventies.I sold some of my antennas at the Dayton Hamfest around 1978 and the first company to copy my antenna was VOCOM Communications.Originally the antenna had a trimmer capacitor to adjust for resonance.Other manufactures used a fixed capacitor. The secret to performance was a low angle of radiation.Sometimes simple designs work best. 73'S VE3HJP

  • I can use that 5/8 wave antenna as a flag pole, too. Go big or go home, apparently.

  • pass

  • Will this work for a portable police scanner?

  • @MrScrappydue if its a BNC connector then yes.

  • @MrScrappydue I HIGHLY recomend the Diamond RH77CA if you have a BNC connector but if you have a SMA connector then it would be SRH77CA I bought one about 3 or 4 months ago for my police scanner and I noticed a BIG difference the RH77CA that is for my scanner

  • Can you tell me the adaptor that you put on your handheld? Will the 5/8 telescopic wave help me to be understoood. I have a Yaesu VX-6r. I can hear the operators, but they have a hard time hearing me. Thanks, kc2vjh

  • eeoprr.... It depends on what what is preventing them from understanding you. Is it the signal or is it your audio or modulation. The vx-6r has a mic gain in it and the default is mid range. I know cuz I just got one. Check your manual if this is the case. 73....

  • exact !!!

  • buen video 73

  • can you find that antenna on e-bay? who makes it.

  • getting my call sign in about 1 or 2 days. im on the big island. i have the pepeekeo repeater 146.880- possibly linked about a quarter mile from my house. maybe i can try see if it can reach oahu. im gonna try make a 3 element yagi day i may possibly hit someplace in oahu wit. pretty stoked to do it.

  • lucky you in Hawaii! 73 from vancouver raining all the time BC.

  • How do i test if the 2 meter radio i had given to me works i hear people on 145.77 but if i talk by asking for a radio check theres no replies other than 1 person said give us your call sign and we will give you a check

  • The reason they do not reply, is because you need a licence to operate the 2 meter band. They are asking for your call sign to check if you have a licence. As far as I am aware it is forbidden for licenced operators to talk to unlicensed users. Hence the silent treatment. Someone with more experience could tell you more.

  • shame im lost then lol how do i know if this works!

  • I would say that it probably does work. You called out on it, and they told you to give out your callsign, which means they must have heard your voice. So it must be transmitting and receiving. Is it a handheld? If so, then like this vid shows antenna upgrades make a big difference.

  • yes handheld its a Midland CT-22 aka Alan

  • Bud you have to be lics first to even talk on a ham radio. Im a lics ham an even know you may not have had a call sign i would of let you know that your radio works but after that i would have asked you for your call signs and if you didnt have one i would have stopped talking to you why?, its because the fcc do not want hams talking to unlics operators.

  • so they all suck except the last one?

  • Yes, I love my bigger antenna.

The weakness that I have to deal with is that it's comparatively fragile and under rough handing conditions poses a risk to the HT antenna connector (excessive stress). For those situations I use a flexible 1/4λ with a 1/4λ tiger tail for counterpoise.

Otherwise, yes, yes. I agree. In this situation bigger is better. :)

  • thanks for the great information i'm gona get a 5/8 when i get my first radio after i pass my tech class test in a few days.

Would you mind possably recomending a good starter radio for me. i am planing on using it in conjunction with my storm spotter traing here in Indiana. I will also probably end up surfing the air waves lol.

    Mahalo Aloha

  • for a handheld(HT), i have a ft-60r, its very rugged, and has a good batery

  • Thanks for the comparisons, great video.
