I always loved this song. I think it's just hyperbole by a guy who doesn't understand why a girl doesn't dig him - he's a good guy (in his own opinion).
This is patently about the United States. This song came out in 1971 on the album American Pie, when the US was, among other things, embroiled in a long running and bitterly divisive war in Vietnam.
Now that I've listened to this song some 20 times, I think it's not about anyone in particular. He's singing like he's drunk or just having fun and yet his lyrics are designed to make us think. So clever, Don McLean. You truly are the master of poetic songs with riddles!
I AGREE! The cat in the sink is just perfect. I had some McLean records in my collection in high school, was very into solo artists, but the pressing was bad and all the songs sounded really bass-.y. This song was on that record. I like the brighter, clearer sound on this video. Love this song! Can still remember laughing the first time I played it...
I've never heard this song before until a few days ago. It's fun to listen to and to watch even though someone's fat cat is all there is. I think the song is about some past presidents, particularly JFK, LBJ and RN who was in a scandal by then I think.
am I the only one who thinks this is just about (read: takingg the piss out of) a very conceited person who believes they are fantabulous and everyone should love them?
This may have been about John F. Kennedy, but it applied even more to George W. Bush! Sad this is still the kind of people making decisions for Americans. Elected or "elected" these guys are the downfall.
This song brings back memeries - my parents used to play it in the car when I was about 7 - of course most of it went above my head at that age, thanks for the lyrics too - I'm not sure I ever really got them at that age
a great humorous song with an acknowedged sleaze, mixed with roman arrogance and english land stealing imperialism. the character of the song is undoubtably the greatest hustler of all JOHN F. KENNEDY
The cat should bathe in the tub because the sink ain't big enough for 'im.

@schwing1957 You've so over simplified it, it's actually a satire. Read mllemona1967's comment to understand.

@starryeyedocean I agree, it sounds like this person is extremely egocentric. XD

tsk tsk.. making references to jebus? you'll go to H E double hockey sticks for that, but it is a very good portrayal of a dictator such as gaddafi..
