  • K?

  • I loved Bryan's reaction when he couldn't bend his wrist. He was just like "Yeeeaaahhh..." :D but great video

  • When I make the fist with my thumb on the side, the tip of my thumb jabs into my target. No bueno. How can I still make a fist and avoid hitting my thumb?

  • It feels uncomfortable for me, please reply on how to get used to it or something? :/

  • Subcribed :)

  • I thought dexter new Jujitsu

  • The blonde guy DOES look really bored.

  • @allfatz

You haven't seen the other guy then.

  • I'm not messing with his garden hose ;P lololol

  • I've always learned to punch with the knuckles from the index and middle finger. It looks in your videos like you guys are punching with the smaller knuckles. Is there a reason for this? Pros, cons?

  • @Sin6667 IF you manage to look our wrist in the correct position at point of impact you create a virtual straight punching structure from knuckle to elbow. Its like being hit with a truck vs a mini cooper

  • @Solkufu

Thanks but that doesn't really answer my question. The angle they are hold this fist is upward, which changes the point of impact. I want to know if they are intending to make it look like you punch with smaller knuckles, or if this are comparable to uppercuts (as far as impact point on the fist).

  • @Sin6667 The point of impact is with the smaller knuckles

  • @Sin6667

Hitting with the top two knuckles in a vertical fist will collapse the wrist joint. So it's basically whereever the structure is strongest, is where the fist should make contact with. That applies to all 3 fist alignments, palm down, up, vertical sideways.

  • @Cruelty1633

Yeah, I was noticing when hitting a bag with verticals. I think I haven't noticed before because for one: I don't practice vertical punches on targets as much as a should. But mostly because my middle knuckle is so large it hits with most of my punches. You're right though, the two smaller hit with the verticals naturally from keeping the wrist straight. Thanks.

  • @Sin6667 Most people using the boxing palm down fist because they like distance fighting. It's what MMA/boxing made popular. But it's not the only brand that can be used. Fighting close in, uses the other fist alignments more. It's also why karate has that spiral drill they do. One reason, there are more. Beginners should use palm strikes. Don't even worry about fist alignments.

  • 5:25 DAT FACE.

  • THIS VID WAS AWESOME and because of this and the one about not using the shoulder during chain punching my technique just got a LOT better!

  • Very informational... I didn't know that about boxing.

  • thanks but what if u put the thumb inside the closed fist and kind of hold it is that bad?

  • @rellon2246 its an extremely bad idea. You'll break your thumb if u impact someone hard enough.

  • Damn good info here thanks a lot

  • thank you jin young

  • I tried this and it works, good information, thanks for sharing!

  • You can feel you're talking just by moving the thumbs and throwing a few punches. Neat!

  • I agree with Warpath1337. The more I have studied Wing Chun, the more I desire to train in it and understand more of it. Power can mean a lot, but endurance will save your life (and win you bouts) more than sheer strength. And by learning to fight as efficiently as possible - and by efficiently, I mean by requiring less strength to execute techniques properly - you will fight harder and longer. Go watch the Ip Man movies: they are a great showcase for Wing Chun!

  • @LupineMaverick In previous eras, one had to worry about endurance for the simple reason that after the 5th person you have defeated, the other 15 aren't going to give you a breather between rounds like UFC. If you gassed yourself early, then you're basically dead. There was no surrender or I give up. Even the best sword users of the Japanese era got tired eventually, and could be easily killed. They could no longer fight.

  • BTW if a old Chinese guy can generate speed and power with this art (and they can) imagine a larger and in shape practitioner such as the gentleman in the video. All arts have flaws and this one is no exception but the more I study it the more I see its intrinsic value.

  • I would like to train with this guy. Very humble and gentle. This art is explosive. The guy in the background bothers me. Thank you for showing the physiology of the technique's root. Good technique and good form lead to good results. Those who question this art need to understand it was developed by relatively small people and not by large Europeans, and thus proper technique was needed to generate power. Good boxers make good fists and western boxing has proper punching forms also.

  • @Warpath1337 Just think of it as a focus test. Although Jin has been using women more in the demo videos, or others who can control their posture better.

  • The guy in the back just wants to fight already... He looks bored....

  • Awesome. Great job explaining and clarifying how and why!

  • thanx jin young

  • WHY IS THE GUY IN THE BACK ALWAYS PISSED

  • Too much talking

    Too repetitive.

Other than that, I've learned something today

  • you look like dk in tokyo drift lol

  • the white guy looks very impatient and the asian guy is taking too long explaining. went and took a dump, came back and hes still talking about the water hose.

  • Hey he's not messing with his garden hose, ok.

  • the white dude looks like he doesnt wana be there

  • A 240 lb boxer is going to risk hand injury no matter how he makes his fist. He has so much mass coming behind that punch it's bound to screw up sometimes...even if he used your wing chun punch. If the wing chun fist is so good, how come other martial arts with normal fists hold the breaking records. Just some constructive criticism.

  • @robertslistening

If you train to the max sure you can achieve "breaking records". This is good advice for normal people who do not want to risk injury.

I am curious where/how Wing Chun place the fingers in the palm. I have heard nails in at the base of the fingers by pro types, but tips of the fingers in the first fold of the palm seems much more natural and safe though I admit I know little about punching people.

  • @robertslistening Wing Chun punches are uncommitted therefore they are not meant to generate the most force as possible like many other martial arts such as karate, tkd ect. Wing Chun punches are supposed to be fast and efficient. With the strong wrist it adds to the efficiency of each strike. My take on this.

  • @Arbiter1231

The committment is in the transfer of the body weight. Thus in external arts, they commit by over extending or leaning in. In internal arts, people committ by stepping farther into the opponent's space.

  • Video summary: don't kink your hose

  • The white guy must feel used.

  • @Axxisss Yes they are, man. Look up the term "martial artist."

  • There's this guy that claims that whether his thumb is past his index finger or not, no one he knows is strong enough to bend his fist. He claims its thanks to his iron fist program. Is this viable or can I assume he is full of sh*t...

  • How does he know so much about this? hes amazing !

  • @QasimAnwar135 of course he knows it, b/c he's just repeating whatever his sifu told 'em... i know this b/c i used to learn wing chun from his sifu @ west l.a.

i saw this video from the wing chun group i've joined on fb, and what i think it's amazing is, how many people actually rated "thumbs up" after listening to what a "rookie" preaches here on youtube...

i personally prefer a real sifu instead...

  • @accdbsme He just called Hawking Cheung's student a rookie. That's basically an insult against Hawking Cheung and his instructor, Ip Man.

These things tend to go in a line.

  • "he's not messing with his garden hose"

  • Very useful, however I find thumb on the top has the danger of it getting caught and being pulled back. I think its best to place it next to the first (index) finger.

  • Very useful, however I find thumb on the top has the danger of it getting caught and being pulled back. I think its best to place it next to the first (index) finger.

  • Since when engineers were experts of human biology?

  • Other dude is just standing there awkwardly haha

  • The dude looks a lil bit tired =SS

  • So you say jiujitsu and karate is wrong?

Or is it just a different technique? Cause it worked for more than 1000 years.

  • @Theunit236 one inch punch has a vertical fist and ist very powerfull in short range, and can be powerfull long too,

  • @Theunit236 He didn't say that. I'm sure it would be best to know something like karate or some other arts that teach the fist that way than nothing at all. Maybe he just means that Wing Chun can exploit that style of fist because it knows the weakness of it.

  • @Theunit236 No he isn't saying that. In Wing Chun like he said its about elbows the centerline and in theory not using your shoulders. Using the shoulder ruins the structure of the body during a routine or whatever. Also with why WC Practitioners use the elbows because whenever you punch all your force is generated from your elbow and biceps, therefore no matter the distance the punch will be strong. With using the shoulders the punch is most powerful at the end of the punch.

  • @Arbiter1231 no, it's about flexibility and to control your body. sorry i got that from ip man.

  • @TobiCollab Uh, huh "I got that from ip man." Yeah... right. Sure its about flexibility and control, it's uncommited punches vs. committed punches. If uncommitted punches such as the ones used in Wing Chun were powered through the shoulder's you wouldn't be able to throw many efficient punches. But is it a different technique than karate or jiujitsu? Yes due to the structure and method of striking.

  • @Arbiter1231 dude, don't be so harsh to me, i don't even know you? lol

  • @TobiCollab Next time don't lie about being taught by Ip Man.

  • @Arbiter1231 it's a movie, dumbass :)

  • @TobiCollab it is a movie. But any hotshot who thinks that he knows wing-chun because of a movie is a "dumbass :)", there's more to it than "flexibility and control of the body." anyways your comment had indeed no relevance to what i was replying to. I was comparing WC structure to traditional arts such as karate.

  • @Theunit236 And with that being said Wing Chun is also about dominating the defenses of your opponent therefore outmaneuvering and overpowering his movements, and coming from the elbow a punch is faster than if you were to through a hook.

  • Thank. You. So. Freaking. Much!

  • the other guy looks really bored

  • Comment removed

  • i'm more of a boxer and just learned something!thanks

  • you are a beast. i love all ur vids haha

  • I really would like to take Wing Chun but I live in Youngstown, Ohio. I don't think there are any Wing Chun teachers out here. Where can I try and find one? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I just want to learn how to defend myself.

  • Fantastic video. Just solved my fist problem. Thx

  • nice! thank you very much

  • 2:00 Brian is checking you out

  • 6 People all went out, got into fist fights, and shattered their wrists.

  • 5:25 "Fuck yeah" lol!!

  • oh my god thats great

  • this is beautiful. well done.

  • thank man!now i know how to form the right "fist" relieving the tension and more fluid "garden hose" passage :)

  • great tut! i really appreciate your effort! i got one question though...isn't it more likely to break your thumg using this technique?

    cheers

  • @floxxflow no way like this the thumb doesn't receive any direct impacts, it's different if it's goes under the others fingers or first knuckle..

  • he always says "mkay" :D but I like this guy, he's a good teacher

  • Great Video :)

  • Holly crap, This vid is probably the best instruction vid in youtube..

  • Clear, concise, good use of analogy and explanation.

    Good video friend

  • @myjizzureye you have problems...

    go get a life

  • @EazyE275 OKAY!!!!

  • @myjizzureye lol ;)

  • everyone listen up. if you like the video you should thumbs up thanks

  • if your comment ends with: '''' is the best martial arts. No matter for how long you've been practicing you're a noob because you didn't understand yet that there is always something to learn from every martial arts, from major points to details. You can have some that you like more than others but even from styles I hate I think there's something they could teach. P.S I love wing chun lol

  • The white guy in the vid looks bored for some reason. I get into arguments from time to with my brother about martial arts. He has done some martial arts training but i am studying my masters in biomedical engineering and undergrad in mechatronic engineering and he seems to think he knows more about body mechanics then me. I am glad to see that some martial artists realise engineers do have some thing to contribute.

  • this guy is flippin awsome and plus wing chun is the best, i wish jin young could teach me wing chun

  • thXx man!!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=CkjzDaVSPYA

    it's wing chun bi*ch!

  • 5:25

thats guys face was like a Fuck yeah haha :D

  • "would make steering wheels [straight line]." How about motorcycles?

  • @kbub8 have you ever driven a motorcycle?

they're made to where you arms are supported by your body like in wing chun. I don't believe these ideas were taken into effect when making steering devices, but it is pretty ironic.

  • @kbub8

For motorcycle hands point down gravity not at work, handle supports ur arm weight, for car to have handles like motor cycle, instead of steering wheel, it mean gravity pulling down muscles supporting the weight not practical, think about where position of arms for motorcycle and steering wheel and u ill answer your question. in both cases the best is selected for eeach motor vehicle.

  • Points taken..

  • We're not turning, we're pushing and smashing forward to knock our oponents head off.

  • there is n engineer here.thx for the video =)

  • sorry, the comment didn't come out as I intended (stupid ipad)...

    two reasons:

    1. A stronger wrist upon impact will ensure less energy is absorbed from a bending (even if minute) to transfer more energy to the target.

    2. The extensor (top part) of the wrist has 8 main pulleys (tendons) across it, where two major ones end up connecting to the thumb. By rotating the thumb inwards (tuck it next to the middle finger), you lose two pulleys or 25% of support. Keep it slightly up&out, you keep power.

  • "im not messing with his garden hose."

  • YEAH THANKS NOSTRADAMUS hehe.

  • thank you a lot of , this is for the love of iron fist

  • thank you, i learned something on this video.

  • absolutely amazing, fantastically described!

  • I used to box and now thai box and I've always been considered heavy-handed, these vids are completely changing the way I think about punching, there's gonna be a revolution in my technique because I can feel these principles working when I train them.

    Thanks

  • every body who makes this sport is fuck

  • @shahin623m

Can you translate "every body who makes this sport is fuck" into German? I can't understand what you wanted to say. Thanks!

  • that is fuck

  • fuck

  • thank you! i have been looking for a tutorial like this forever!

  • The real trick is trying to tense your wrist and fist just before impact :D

  • good vid.

    very helpful !

  • wushu practitioner here, dang tried punching with the new form and I feel so much power while punching! thank you so much for this!

  • cool thanks dude I just started wing chun and i am just practicing siu lum tao like everyday I wonder how long it will take me to move on to the next step I am going to give it maybe a maximum of 6 months for the first set.. thanks for the fist thing i been trying to figure it out

  • good stuff!

  • I really need to learn how to make a fist couse i broke my hand now for the 2nd time punching wrong

  • @TsimFuckiz WAIT what the fuck? Ain't you dead?

  • @piller5 no im alive..

  • @TsimFuckiz Bullshit you died!

  • this is amazing

  • Great video man looked at some jeet kune do vid's which showed the flawed method u were talking about thanks!!

  • I have been training for close to 9 years now and your simple viideo has improved my punching in a tremendous way. Thank you very much for your contribution. *bow*

  • but i feel less punching power and weird if my thumb dun pass my 1st finger

  • this was well-explained, and useful. thank you!

  • Dang! That thumb thing made a huge difference! =O Thank you!!! =D

  • thanks a lot bro...

    u've corrected me !

  • Great information. All your videos are outstanding. Some of the best out there. I Really enjoy all your videos. Your students are very lucky. Looking forward to your next video. Thanks for taking the time to share all your useful information.

  • 5:25 smug face :]

  • dude thanks a lot for that valuable information!! u rock

  • the white guy is like ... uurrgg this is sooo boring.

  • IDK..I FEEL AS I LOSE POWER AND HAND GRIP IF I DONT PASS MY THUMB TO MY SECOND FINGER

  • @carameloxx thats illusion and your habits getting the better of you're perceptions...the way he teaches fist structure is this video is technically and structually correct. if you dont feel the power increase then you are not punching in line in the first place. or you may be punching in line but not keeping your body direction in line. whatever the reason, this video is a superior lesson. much thanks. i almost feel sorry for anyone i have to defend myself against now

  • @runelord37 thx for the advice...i will keep on praticing till i find the right way

  • so sorry but the part where you said "im not messing with his garden hose" really brought out some laughter

  • @IREIGNI hahaha me too man but this guy knows his shit, good metaphor too.

  • thumbs up if "IP man movie series" lead you to this video :P

  • I really enjoyed the chi explanation

  • 3:30 "im not messing with his garden hose"

  • Thank U......

  • I also saw your straight punch video and your explanation as to why one should keep his elbow close to the body (main stick).

The reason behind straight punches hitting high is to also protect the face. Wing chun practitioners leave themselves open to other fighters who don't practice their style.

You yourself felt the need for "unorthodox" fighting on your distance fighting video.

  • @Danielnoctis incorrect analysis...we do not leave ourselves open... if you are not practicing wing chun than i can understand your misperception. hitting high also does not afford true facial protection. one can easily pass defenses like that.

  • what the fuck is wrong with the white guy in the back, does he have short attention span like most americans or is he just trying to look like a bad ass acting like he doesn't give a shit

  • Don't know if my last comment posted... I love your video and i'm going to try out your theary as far as my thumb placement... Thank you for all of your videos... If possible can you look at my video on how to make a fist and let me know what you think... Thank you in advance...

  • This is a very useful information for martial arts practitioners, thanks man! keep on posting!

  • jin young is not only martial artist but his philosophy is defenitly logical.

    thank you master jin

  • ..Thanks for the Tips i will keep this in mind, if i ever have to Protect myself from some Punks. Nice Channel...

  • the other guy was so bored

  • this is a great video, i'm only sad that i didn't know of it sooner otherwise I wouldn't suffer from this wrist sprain for a week so far

  • Cool this guys smart

  • What about the risc of hurting the thumb when you miss hit?

Or in a fight, isn't it safer to keep the thumb in? Just a thought...

I do experiance a significant differance when I keep my thumb like you explain.

    Thanks!

  • @chargerbelgium you can still keep the thumb protected using this technique. just make sure its adjacent to your first finger and hugged close. wrapping in front is what he teaches to guard against. in a fight there is no true way to protect fingers regardless of form.beside unless you are throwing outside or reverse jabs there is no reason why you would compromise your thumb with this form. this is primarily for martial artists not boxers anyway.

  • @runelord37 What does that mean, "for martial artists not boxers?" Boxers aren't martial artists?

  • @ruebuscm boxing is a controlled game...you can apply boxing strikes in self defense and even use boxing tactics...however its a science geared towards scoring in a ring. your fist is placed fairly securely in a glove at any rate so this application wouldnt be practical for boxers unless ungloved

  • awesome, that was my weak spot, until now, thanks!

  • Hi, your vids are brilliant, very informative and easy to understand. However, I was wondering if you may possibly have the equivalent for children, for example, basic training for beginners.

  • I actually tested this out! Props!

  • The white guys needs to show a little more respect! Respect for his art and for his instructor. He looks so bored and not involved, like he doesn't give a shit.

  • LOL your shoulders would be so freaking tired XD keep this up it makes more sense than other crap tutorials.

  • anybody else laugh when he said "im not messing with his garden hose"?

  • yo wont you break your thumb if you punch wrong if you do that?

  • if u put the thumb on the side it sticks out isnt that bad if u throw a punch wrong and u will brake it

  • :-) I have bin taught all different ways & I find that the thumb over the first finger works best for me.

  • Hi, Just wan to tell u your video are really good!! How i hope i could learn from u.. Thanks for everything.. Peace!! =D

  • They say we should respect every martial arts no matter what form is it, do you agree with me?

  • bullshit alles bullshit

  • awsome stuff
