Preloading the front end makes it a little easier to pop the front wheel up. Get going at a decent speed, bump the front brake to compress the fork, put your weight toward the back of the bike, and go wot. If you can do it smooth, the combo of your fork extending and the throttle wide open will bring up the front end pretty easily. Saves your clutch a little, too!
Looks great man, but after an expensive rebuild, I think Id like to first try and just get the front wheel to pop up a bit. Still not fully broken in, I I cant yet whomp it. But I rebuilt engine, andrews cams + S&S sper E. Dan g it I should be able to get that front up. I heard you should try just to get used to picking up front an inch or 2 to get used to motion? How bad for engine and tranny are wheelies? clutch, cant be good for her?
you should borrow/buy a dirtbike and get used to the whole idea on that, they are cheap to fix and built to wheelie. harleys on the other hand are not but can still be done no problem if youve got some expirience on one wheel
People were pulling stunts and being crazy on Harley's and Indians before the Japanese made bikes. Sport bikes didn't invent the sport, they just made it easier.
My stock 08 1200 custom will pull one. But he's right....a good way to ruin one. Those crotch rocket guys dont know what to think when yer hangin a wheel on a 600 pund bike.
Wow that was awesome I've had SV650s's and was just learning how to get that torque monster to stand up. I've test driven 883's and didn't think they had the torque nor the geometry/suspension to pull one. Great vid!!!
Ummm... Why would you pop a wheelie on a Harley leave that to the dudes with the rainbow bikes and stick to cruisin. Not that this wasnt bad ass though.
Those Sporty customs are the shit for wheelies. I had a 2000 1200 Custom that I used to stand straight up and down. I had a sissy bar on it and would stand it up so straight my ol lady's hair would drag the pavement. NO SHIT! I got where I could keep it up into 2nd. Traded her off for a fatboy years ago but always miss those wheelies! good vid
That is STUPID. Good way to tear up a perfectly good bike!
I LOVED IT! :-]]
I've guided my front end up slightly in first and hop in second. More of a drag take off than a wheelie. Mine's the beefier 1200 Sport with a stage one kit though. Ride on, man!
You do em in either 1st or 2nd...pull your clutch in, wick your throttle and hold it and let out smooth and quick on the clutch. Once it's up, EASE off the throttle to bring it down gently...if you dump it, you'll have a bad fucking day.
if you want to do wheelies so bad, id recomend getting a decent bike first. Your 45° V twin is just about the worst engine configuration you could install in a bike. Any 600cc sport bike will outperform any harley of any displacment (stock of course) in any way you would care to measure. Price included.
no shit sherlock lol. Never seen a road king do a wheelie before though have you? They look bad ass! Talk about displacement lol. Your trying to compare a porsche to a hummer though, of course a 600 cc sport bike would outperform harleys at wheelies, their light as hell and the torque ratio is crazy. I've got a sportster that will keep up off the line with most sport bikes. Sportsters will scrape knees too, its just a different kind of ride. So imho makin a harley do a wheelie bad ass!!!
jap-bike-fanboy much? Harley's aren't performance bikes just as Cadillacs aren't performance cars. They're stylish, comfortable, and built tough. Any shithead can pop a wheelie on a sport bike. Your comment is quite shortsighted, because there are areas where Harley beats other sporty bikes. Let's put you 600cc and my 1400cc S&S on a drag strip and see who wins. To say one is always better is stupid. Bikes are different, ride what you want and stop bashing everyone else. God you're an ass.
I have this same bike except it is a 2007 1200 sportsterxl and I could never get it up like that. I have gotten it up a little. What kind of aftermarket parts do you have on it?
how much would a runable decent condition early 80's harley cost? nothing huge, just something thats not a sport bike. im not built for one, and i like harleys/power cruisers better anyways.
Must be a sport bike rider on a rented bike, No respectable HD rider would wear a fullface helmet and proper jacket, need a pudden'bowl helmet and vest
Just kidding. WEAR PROPER GEAR ANYTIME YOU RIDE!!!!!
hey man. How do you shift up when your doing a wheelie? I own a 1985 Honda Magna 700cc. Not to sure if I want to try this yet, I've been unable to get the bike's front wheel up without using the clutch. I really don't want to damage my front fork but hell wheelie's are awesome to watch (especially on a cruiser).
You make it sound like it's impossible when in fact it is very easy on that bike. I have a 2004 XLR 1200 and I can get the tire up pretty high without even using the clutch, and I have only been riding street bikes for one year. All I do is ride in 1st gear at around 2500 rpm, rip the the gas to get the front end to "hop up" then when it rebounds, crank it again and hold it there and up ya go. Simple as that. Also, shift weight as far back as possible.
Anybody can pull a wheelie on a 600 or a 1000 sportbike. Not many riders though can hold a wheelie on a cruiser of any size. I wish more cruiser riders were capable of this kind of control. Keep it up man:)
Cant tell you that because I have no tachometer, and if I did I wouldn't be looking at it anyways. I do it all by feel & engine noise. Please don't take this the wrong way, but by the questions your asking it sounds as if you wish to attempt this. DON'T do it. It's not worth your life, your nice bike or a lifetime in a wheelchair (buddy of mine is confined to a chair for doing this very thing on a sport bike).
This activity shreds fork seals, clutches, transmission gears/shafts, can crack engine block (trans housing which is part of the engine block), stretch or break primary chains, breaks shafts, break drive belt, can crack frames, wears out swing arm bushings, and the list goes on and on and on.
When I bring the front end down it has to be timed just right, to late and out of power it drops like a tank, it has to bet let down under power to make it not such a brutal blow to the forks & frame (almost like your touching down a jumbo jet)(a some what harsh landing happens once in this vid, but it can be much worse) these bikes are not built to handle this type of punishment.
Also if you watch close enough, I am throwing some body weight around to keep the bike stable should it want to wonder from being off balance or a sloping road grade etc... Just because non of this happen in this vid don't mean stuff will break every time, It's that one time that something breaks that will ruin your cycling pleasure & probably your health and a certain big blow to the wallet.
pretty much. its all about the timing. just the right amount of rpm's + the right amount of clutch and most important,,, traction! But be careful, its a very fine line. Not enough rpm's or traction and you look like a tire smokin fool, to much rpm's & traction and your on your ass and out thousands of dollars in both hospital bills and repairs. Been on a motorcycle from the age of 5, 30 years on dirt (motocross) and 20 years on pavement.
