  • watching this the same day that US occupation forces are leaving from Iraq is unreal. Obama gave a speech today congradulating US soldier's for their sacrifices in liberating Iraq. Here is Chomsky three years before saying that the country has been utterly destroyed. Who do you trust anymore?

  • What a truly great man!

  • @griffo1968 It is the destruction of Jews.. along with anything non-Islamic that they want in that area. If it were anything else, peace would have been accomplished by now. Use some common sense. A country the size of NJ or so surrounded by people on all sides. What better motive is there for peace? THEY, especially HAMAS does NOT Want Peace! THIS IS FACT!

  • @griffo1968 Every country has something to be criticized about; however, the entire history has been distorted which is causing outright unjustified hatred for Israel. There are too many sources to ignore as well as Israeli's who know 1st hand. They are surrounded w/people who by charter want them dead. Al Husein was the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood who met with Hitler & conspired & perpetuated Jewish hatred in the middle east. It is NOT the reclaiming of land; it is the destruction

  • Chomsky is an anarchist but more in the long-term. It is his preferred econnomic model but he realises we are not really ready for it just as we were not really ready for capitalism 400 years ago. His analysis of US foreign policy is just a realistic way of looking at imperial power as if he were an outsider and not so embedded with the bias of the status quo.

  • I don't agree with all Professor Chomsky's views but he I respect his views. I think it is hypocritical to demonize the U.S. Government and U.S. elections then heaps praise of Mr. Castro in Cuba.

  • @jvarela965 you clearly did not understand his position. you took it completely the wrong way.

  • @blackstars56 “American economic strangulation of Cuba” has been designed and maintained [to hide] the successes of Castro’s programs to improve health & living standards [which would] spread “the Castro idea of taking matters into one’s own hands.” Source: Profit Over People, by Noam Chomsky, p. 77 & 83 Mar 1, 1997 - Cuba is a once prosperous now broken and runied country. God help the next generation who now has to PAY for Mr. Castro's successes.

  • @jvarela965 Hey, thanks for posting up the book and pages from Chomsky's book!

  • great interview

  • i dislike americans more everytime i see a chomsky interview.....how the FUCK can you not cherish a Gem like that.....i cant believe most of the younger generation doesnt even have a clue who he is.....he's fucking 82....i hope he lives a long long time...

  • Good interview...good questions!

  • what a genius

  • I want Palin to run, and win next election. The worst candidate will finally finish the job and force the world to finally mobilize against this insanity. The American house is crumbling, time to destroy it and build a new foundation...

  • @Mistermax30

Heh, there's a funny sort of logic in your joke/argument.

  • @EmeraldAxe2 Thank you brotha...

  • I wonder what his global book sales are? Also, how many languages have his

    books been translated into?

  • @whereismybailouttv I believe 50 languages.

  • 'It's based on spend & borrow, as if there's no tomorrow!' Who else can come up with poetry on the spot?! LOVE YOU, NOAM. One of the greatest men alive

  • Lord Bertrand Russell was a detestable Monster.

  • the protection of a withe face

    nice frace

  • They have a copy of his most recent book in my school's library just too bad some dick has been borrowing it for the last few months so I can't read it :(

  • sound is really low

  • Excellent interview by that young lad...

    Very interesting and relevent questions.

  • i noticed that too, great interviewer, very engaged without bias

  • try turning up your speakers

  • @addrriannna he is old as fuck give him a break

  • Let's hope he lives as long as Bertrand Russell!!!

  • wonderful.

  • MIT robot upgrades CBC droid

  • : )

  • Nir Rosen

  • I don't catch the name of the reporter in Iraq. Anyone help please?

  • Nir Rosen

  • I don't know what the point of AlJazeeraEnglish having this video but the interviewer asked the question about the next president implementing a precidented pullout from Iraq and president Obama did exactly that.

Chomsky made a good point. We are becoming like the Roman Empire and Americas imperealist policies aren't the policies that we should implement anymore.

  • as bloody as the Iraqi invasion/occupation has been, it will become a highpoint in the history of that region, marking the time when more freedom and modernity bloomed. thanks to G. Bush, the Iraqi's will have moved closer to regaining hunter-gatherer freedom, freedom from silly and mendacious rules and superstitious religion.

  • I would make a serious reply to that but its not worth the bother.

  • I think that you wouldn't say the same if Saddam dropped a bomb in your house and killed your daughter...

  • It must be nice to have a brain that picks up so little extraneous input that the world appears to be so very simple.

  • What if it was Bush? Would you keep your position?

  • rh001YT they just went there for oil.

  • who is the journalist he mentions at the beginning?

  • "Spend and borrow as if there's no tomorrow"....3 months later after this interview, the economy collapses.

  • people just ignore, thats why we have ignorance! But how can we ignore this man! More...

  • Chomsky is a genius and anyone who can't see this is crazy. How many other ivy leaguers do you see out there telling the common man that we are being duped???

  • No, he is one man with courage. He is a professor who has no need for political power, so he doesn't have to suck up to anyone. He says the truth that politicians cannot do.

He is saying what's on the tip of our tongues.

But in terms, that can be viewed as "genius."

  • I read one of his books, its a real wake up call to how the world really works.

  • @Seano71 it's a joke with no punchline

  • Does it matter if UserUK got attention on this issue about religion in the US. Evenmore is not so important that Chomsky says that either. What it really matter is if this religion fundamentalism exist or not in the US. I have all my family in the US and my experience is that american are very fundamentalism in almost every issue they believe on. What does this says for U?

  • I am not disagreeing that there are fundamentalist in the US only with the fact that he would have no idea one way or the other. I live in Canada and its pretty much the same here. I was raised in one of the most fundamentalist religions, we are still puritans at heart no matter how many rights we grant. My only reason for commenting on useruk's statement was the fact that he was making a baseless statement.

  • What America have you been too? I'm more concerned with the crazed leader of Iran gaining a nuke then I am with Christians trying to rehabilitate homosexuals.

  • I live in the US now you idiot. And I don't have to live in a country to know how radical they are (examples: Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan).

  • Go back to GB, we kicked all you fuckin red coates off of our continent once and you still keep coming back.

  • I can see you possess Chomsky's stunning intellect.

  • I can see that you dont possess enough intellect to know genius when you hear it.

  • I do however have enough to know an ignorant imbecile when I hear one.

  • Yes you hear yourself speak daily.

  • Well it's difficult to hear myself over your mother's loud moans.

  • lol......so this is what a superior intellect has to resort too.......your mama jokes......I rest my case

  • It's not a joke. Your mother's loud vocalizations are quite deafening.

  • Chomsky has an excellent movie called "Manufacturing Consent" anyone who hasnt seen it should really check it out. Really interesting stuff dealing with how governments manufacture reasons and events that meet thier hidden agendas.

  • I heard that there is a Noam Chomsky movie being made!!!!!

  • does that matter?

does it matter who is telling what so that what he/she's telling is worth something or not?

  • lol I see you posses Chomsky's brilliant intellect. I was reading Chomsky's interview with Egyptian blogger Karim Elsahy who was interviewing the professor on behalf of Egypt Today magazine. I started reading and reached the sentence where Chomsky said:

"I mean the level of religious fundamentalism in the United States is beyond any country I know."

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my laugh.

  • It's not to the point to question his intelligence, it doesn't matter. And why is that quote so funny? I don't see why you laughed...

  • fundamentalism, isnt just related to religious law. If you just look at the definition of the word you can see where he's coming from. You could even through the constitution in that soup.

  • anti-freedom???? Are you insane?

  • Ill tell you one thing im sure about this current president will NOT get re elected.

bouncedrealitycheck you seem like you need something more than a check

  • What an idiot you are "destoyedu"

Why comment if you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground?

Maybe you should run for the Republican Nominee for President of the United States... Palin/Destroyedu 2012

  • how is he a devil?

maybe you should take youre head out of the bible and read a real book

  • What? Shut up!

  • what's the name of the song at the beginning and end?

  • Manifest treason! Has spoken like a traitor, and shall answer as traitors do. Therefore lay hold of him; bear him to the rock Tarpeian, and from thence into destruction cast him. He shall be thrown down the Tarpeian rock with rigorous hands: he hath resisted law, and therefore law shall scorn him further trial than the severity of the public power which he so sets at nought. AEdiles, seize him!

  • FAIL

  • Who are you talking about ?

  • @eatthis92: About the shameless attempt of this wimpy sophist (whose name I will not utter here) to take all democratic office from the US and to wind himself into a power tyrannical! What else should I talk about?

  • love ya noam.

  • Claims of metaphysical reality (Gods/God) punishing Nations (or individuals) are irrational. But there is political & social reality; IOW this worldly: Nations and people get wise to inequities and injustice eventually. Awareness has been behindhand. But now ready availability of independent public voices & popular works shaping post-colonial attitudes emerging from academia are influencing a salutary pace change. Averting war requires that powerful face overdue call for equality with honesty.

  • May Jah Bless the courageous who expose this shitstem !! We need to start OVERSTANDING this SHITSTEM who keeps the DOWNTRODDEN OPPRESSED !! Jah Live

  • To all those that do not appreciate this man????? u are retards.........he is probably THE most important thinker of our century, and a phrase he ALWAYS uses in interviews or speeches is" LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE FACTS!!!!!!!!!!" Enough said; I do not say he cant be critiqued, on the contrary, what he is ACTUALLY tryin to do is invite the masses to critique what he says, because it is only with knowledge of the facts as they are, that people's eyes will open, instead of jus believing media/govt

  • I like your comment, but from a person with your username I am surprised that you appreciate facts!!

  • I understand why u might be confused..........but dont worry, I'm part of the "AWOKEN" like urself it seems.

    Call it reverse psychology LOL

  • I agree, and Chomsky dares talk of all the issues and documented facts that are side stepped by the political engines that will not bring it out on the media as it should be. As he says over and over, this is not secretive, or conspiracy theories you can verify all this history it just takes alot of work to do so. What is not emphasized by the media as they do celebrities, and other junk info. he says is what we need to look at when it impacts our lives.

  • i had to minimize my screen to block out the barclays advert flashing in the corner. chomsky does not approve.

    suck it hard, barclaycard.

  • I was very disapoinred with the interviewer, who seemed rather shallow and spycophantic. Smug referances to past stuggles against exploitation where not really equated with modern exploitation without any real urgent consern for "justice".

  • USA is rich and powerful because of capitalism and democracy, dont complain that USA is so rich and powerful, we earned it

  • we also earned the hate that followed it by intervening where we shouldnt have...

  • USA is broke its not rich

  • "we earned it" ? who is we?? the 10 million or so unemployed workers or the less that 5% of the U.S. population who owns more than half of the wealth in the country? Oh and by the way ,by projecting military power across the globe, WE get everything we deserve .

  • AMERICIANS are MURDERERS The fact is the USA is KILLING BABIES by the thousands every day 3,000 a day abortion GOD is judging it now 800,000 jobs a month going thousands of stores shutting down military police no trial arrests drought no food you can be GAY but never HAPPY! when you are starving and broke I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes to the Father, but by me call on the name of the Lord SHAL BE SAVED JESUS CHRIST GOD ALMIGHTY
  • excellent comment.jesus is the only way and the only hope in an evil and wicked world.praise jesus the lord of lords and king of kings.

  • mud if you were in a burning building would you complain if there was only one ladder and you didnt like the colour of that ladder?

you would jump atr that chance to escape

JESUS is the escape ladder (JUMP ON)

  • one:I am american and have never murdered anyone by my knowledge

two: Buddhism makes more sense than the religions following jesus christ...I have been raised a roman catholic for years, catholic school and what not, and Christianity as a whole has been brought to a nasty extreme where sensible people can determine its fallacy. If you were a woman raped and forced to bear a baby you could in no way provide for what would you do? Ignorant christian philosophy is ruining this country!

  • Religious nut jobs, you're no better than those so called "murderers", you're just too fucking ignorant to admit it.

  • why are you antichrist? happynobody

  • For I am Lucifer, the bringer of the wind that will extinguish your candle, the bringer of plagues all around the world and the vicious killer of entire populations because they don't agree with me. Oh wait, that's the christian God. My bad.

  • the fact is the USA kill babies by the thousands every day abortion

    GOD is judging it now

    800,000 jobs a month going

    thousands of stores shutting down

    military police no trial arrests

    drought no food

when you are starving and broke

Think of the fundie if you can find one

you may be gay but never happy!

  • I agree the US is doing terrible things, but the whole "God is judging it" thing is pathetic - if there was actually an all powerful God that was judging it, don't you think he's kind of an asshole for just sitting there and judging it for years while all those babies die, just sitting there, making up his mind? Your views are flawed, deal with it.

  • Nations are judged--for doing wrong--and meet their downfall, one way or another. There will be Retribution for every action--both small and great---God is all powerful, but also a God of love & forgiveness---Not a Puppetmaster like fallen angel Lucifer---

  • How about some proof in your words? You're no better citing your blind beliefs than the uneducated fools that were tricked into giving money to the church in exchange for their apparent sin forgiveness back a couple of centuries ago.

  • True True.. Jah Gov't will come down and rule this SHITSTEM & all of these POLITRICKS that enjoy oppressing the DOWNPRESSED each and every day will b punished !! Jah Live !!!!!

  • you must be a really happy person.jesus is the only way.god bless.i hope you see that one day.

  • Right, and all the muslim and buddhists and everyone else are doomed to hell?

  • lmao! valu777? do you really think that the recession has been caused by God being angry at us? do you seriously think this or are you joking? even if God was angry, he gave human beings free will, and as the recession was caused by banks, credit card companies and mortgage companies (all human creations) God has nothing to do with this.

  • he also gave mankind a conscience to do the right thing part of that is no interest or usurer

  • that doesn't answer the question.

  • the devil comes to kill and steal , god lets him go if the nation is sinning

  • who has he killed? he should be brought to justice really. but what court is going to convict the ruler of the underworld. pfft bloody politics...

has he been stealing my money? the bastard. i thought it was the bank. what's the exchange rate like converting earth money to hell's currency? must be an absolute minefield transferring it for use in an incorporeal state. do they have ATM's in hell?

  • Pupil8 = dick. Idiot. Be quiet.

  • I don't know about any "MIT scandal", but I'm sure gonna do a search about it..

  • you are a fuckin idiot, pupil8.

  • his theories on computational linguistics are impossible to implement. he puts too much emphasis on syntax instead of semantics. he states that language did not evolve primarily for communication. not to mention hes really a capitalist at heart and lets not forget the scandal at MIT. so lets not make sink to the level of ad hominem attacks when my criticism is supported by history and his own words.

  • ad hominem attack? haha and calling Chomsky a "moron" isn't one?

I'm not saying that you cannot be critical of him, but calling him "a moron" is uncalled for. He is a great author, scientists and intellectual and the word "moron" is fit for people like Bush, not Chomsky.

  • Don't be so unfair pupil. Some of the aspects of his linguistic theory are not very good for natural languages(nonetheless they're perfect for formal languages, which was alone groundbreaking). But Chomsky's ground contributions to computer science and computational linguistics were crucial. About he stating that "language didn't primarily evolve for communication".. can you provide a source for that?

  • Even though his approach doesn't take much into account the role of social construction of a language, doesn't mean he disregard that as important.

Saying he's "capitalist at heart" is a bold statement..I'm sure you have lots of data to back this up,since it simply contradicts his whole life work.

Just because he's a "tenured anarchist" that doesn't mean he forwent his ideals. But things come to a point where it's a matter of self preservation, since this world is owned by capitalists.

  • So... Apart of ad hominem attacks on Chomsky, do you disagree with what he says in the video?

  • Damn liberals,

You have ruined my college experience. I hate college, my grades are high but I gotta spend hours on papers trying to feed these stupid tree hugging bastards with what they love to hear. they will never Brainwash me .Thank god racism still exists (and always will) , gotta love plastic, forget recycling, support big business, give Israel more than the 10 million or so per day so they bomb Palestinians (hopefully innocent ones).

  • You are troll, too obvious. FAIL.

  • It so surprising that a devout socialist is the most quoted what a surprise. The US bringing freedom to Iraq is just fucking horrible, horrible. The US is worst country ever, just ever. Thanks Noam

  • Define freedom. If the emergence of Al Qa'eda In Iraq is anything to go by, way to go! But whatever the outcome, I don't believe it justifies the thousands of deaths (surgical strikes, my ass). Here's a thought, who is responsible for more American dead, Osama bin Laden or George W Bush?

  • The US brought freedom to Iraq? That statement would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. If what the US brought to Iraq had to be described with one word, I think "misery" would be a really good candidate.

  • What about sums up the problem that is facing the United States, as well as many other nations, though the U.S just takes all the criticism for its large role on the world stage is the fact that this video has not even 40000 views and this man is arguably the most intelligent human being alive today but yet music videos of ignorant, money crazed entertainers gets millions of views. Instead of being interested in what your favorite singer is doing today try learning something about your country.

  • maybe all of da smart peoples just read the transcripts

  • Saudi arabia is the oldest and most valued ally of the united states, not because of its democracy but for the oil.$

  • Anyone knows who was the "very good friend of him, left historian", that wrote "i wished Bush win" so he can undermine the empire??? Who Chomsky refers to?

  • Gaaawwdd! I had forgotten what a complete ass William Buckley was. Narcissistic prick he was. RIP. Go Chomsky....my favorite Jew because he hates the Zionists and understands capitalist democracy is based on social domination.

  • So that's where Avi Lewis went. I really miss him on CBC. What a great interviewer too, and with such a formidable intellect as Noam Chomsky.

  • Would it be antisemetic to suport Saudi Arabia or antiarabic to support Israel.

There is concern with the reckless institutional elites in each sector, but who hates the ordinary walking jew or muslim person in each of those places.

I think they are concerned with abusive power centers not with, again, some kid playing soccer in each of the places mentioned.

  • I didn't see why he would be antisemetic, or anti american. He talks of power cernters that seem to represent their own interest no necessarily the interest of the population.

People, I think, also call him anti american, and I would say its the same thing. There's no hate for the "american" walking on the street, but there is concern with multinationals etc that are simply power centers that have nothing to do with being american; and ,I think, the same goes for the jewish population.

  • i love this man

  • his voice is hard to listen to for long periods of time.

  • not for me i rather enjoy it i can watch forever im going to MIT in a year i wanna ask mr chomsky some questions about anarchsm and take a pic with him hes 80 he does not have much time left who will replace this brilliant man now i will have to listen to finkelstein

  • u said it pal!

i never get sick of listening to him!

  • @ballsauce666

This comment should not have been marked as spam. Spam means spam, not an opinion you don't like.

  • i love the interview!!! really good questions

  • yeah, finally an interviewer (of chomsky) that has a clue

  • dncnutjobs...Noam Chomsky isn't a democrat. He's a very valid voice of reason, and backs his opinions with empirical evidence, something most people can't do. Our political system is broken, and does not cater to the American people in anyway. We as a people, not the government need to work to change that, and it first starts with our attitudes and prejudices.

  • "I'm a boring speaker and I like it that way. I doubt that people are attracted to whatever the persona is. People are interested in the issues, and they're interested in the issues because they are important."

"We don't want to be swayed by superficial eloquence, by emotion and so on."

    Two Chomsky quotes for you.

  • You should look up talks from Chomsky and than post again here to say..

"Yea i admit I'm a smack and i was wrong about him!"

  • Usa is a dream !!!I think it's a nightmare now.

  • Still so sure about that? Even with Obama as prez?

  • he does look twitty for sure but whatever :D

  • There are 2 Americas,

    1. America of the people to which I, Chomsky and all honest humans with conscience belong

    2. The american super empire founded on genocide (native indians),built on expansion (Mexico,philipinnes,cuba,...) and feeds of conquest and bloodshed (Iraq, Veitnam, panama, cuba,East Timor,...). And to the latter, you and all the wing nuts alike belong.

  • Your black and white delineation is simplistic. Us vs. Them is exactly what the elites want us to be doing. In reality there is the common man and there are the elites. The elites divide and conquer the common man so that they can increase their own power.

  • "People who own this country ought to govern it" J Quicny Adams.

Precisely what I said. The elites are in America number 2; the empire. You misunderstood what I said.

  • Noam Chomsky is so correct when talking of THE FACT that we American's do NOT subscribe to the principles establish from the Nuremberg trial tribunals. Just incredible clarity of perception@!

  • He isn't. He didn't. He just made a statement what the americans did in Cambodia was only SLIGHTLY better than what the Khmer Rouge did. And that the american media overrepresented the Khmer Rouge atrocities. And this true statement needs a really warped mind to interpretate it in as it was genocide-denial, like you did.

  • jeffmagic,Chomsky actually corrected the wild exagerations of the US Government, and admitted the figure could be higher, it turned out to be higher than his original estimate, but LOWER than the US estimate, you missed Chomsky's main point, which was that the Khmer Rouge massacred far LESS people, than US-Backed dictator Suharto, in East Timor, yet the US press were SILENT in the face of Indonesia's crimes, because they wwere SUPPORTED by the US, whereas the Khmer Rouge was opposed by the US!.

  • I know his point, to show the US as evil and leftists governments as superior. The problem is, the history is not even close to his version of it. I will not dispute that the US shares a responsibility in the mass killings in East Timor. But Chomsky's claim that the number killed there and in Cambodia are equal is crazy - its not even close. While Chomsky was trying to stop the media from covering the genocide in Cambodia, 2 million people were killed.

  • Oh, the history entirely supports Chomsky's version of it.The US-backed regimes have always killed far more than regimes the US opposed, Guatemala,El Salvador,Nicaragua and many other right-wing Latin American regimes slaughtered millions(2.5 million in Guatemala alone)with US military backing. You missed Chomsky's point about East Timor, his point was,US "concern" for Cambodia was fake concern, because the US media wasnt covering the crimes happening with US support in East Timor at the same time!

  • Ok, lets start with the assumption that 2.5 million people were killed in Guatemala. Using some "Chomsky math", lets divide that number by 80 (the factor of miscalculation by Chomsky in Cambodia). 31,250.

  • Chomsky's main claim isn't about numbers but about the proportion of the population killed: over a third of the population of East Timor (200,000). In Indoneisa itself Suharto murdered about 500,000.
