50 years ago this concept was called a "Carbide Cannon" Barrel was cast iron pipe. Fuel was carbide pellets and water, ammo any old spud bigger than 3" dia. Done some PVC and propane too. Iron cannon much safer! Keep the spark simple. Match the primitive weapon. Longer the barrel the better the accuracy. U go carbide or Propane, iron or PVC remote trigger the thing from a mount. Stand back and film and live. Take advice from an older fool. Had my eyebrows singed more than once.

its nowhere near the same concept as a gun with gunpowder....more like how an engine works when the spark plug ignites atomized fuel inside the cylinder and forces the cylinder up....except your cylinder is a potato the gas is alcohol from the hairspray and your sparkplug is a grill popper......understand?

read my post again and do some research on how a conventional gun/pistol/rifle/cannon works..... a potato cannon is an internal combustion device and does not share ANY of the same components or barely even the same concept... black powder is a mixture of sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate which results in expanding gases but starts from a solid form. A potato cannon is powered by igniting gases (atomized fumes) of alcohol from aerosol cans. No firing pins, no powder, no solids

i had to put a projectile into the gun so that the hairspray could ignite. It didnt ignite whithout one in it. But i would never ever shoot the gun while holding it in my arm. I built a stand for it, so that i can ignite it while keeping save distance from the gun.

I tried to make a potato cannon, but it won't ignite the fuel properly. I made sure the igniter was good. I used a bug spray as the fuel. Perhaps not enough oxygen? I have some of those fans, but I would think the flame would melt the plastic fan. How does your fan run while the the chambers are closed or not.

The fan make you shot potatoes as fast as you can reload because you wipe out all the CO2 between the shots. If you don't put a fan, wich cost 10$ + a coupling(3$-4$), You need to air your chamber for about 2-3 mins minimum for max performance. I've make my own with those plans and OMFG I've recorded some potatoes lauched around 250-300m away at a 30-40degree from ground with an amazing power! I did a cannon with a 90degree bend and a strait one, yeah I did, and I prefer the 90degree one.

They have almost the same power because each time you put the gazes in, you dont have the same ratio each time. I made probably the biggest shot with the one with the 90bend.

And I feel a lot much safer standing dehind a 90bend witch is glued and screwed than behind a combustion chamber that may explode if something wrong happens(and it does, lol!).

For 100$ make yourself a treat and get a riffle-looking potatoe launcher.

I made a cannon similar to this with the two pvc elbows making a u shape. I also made one with no elbows, just a straight cannon. The straight cannon actually works better and is more powerful. I believe that by adding the elbows you would make the chamber to big. And that makes it less powerful since the fuel will be unevenly distributed in the chamber.

Probs find that using 2 x 90degree bends cause less power due to the gases having to change direction around each bend but sometimes for really big cannons you gotta do a 180 bend or they get to long and awkward. Thow your right inline cannons are most powerful.

My comment was in refrance to when an the force moving towards a bend hits a bend it hits the far side of the bend loosing its energy then the resulting energy behind it pushes the shockwave around the corner. Therefor energy is lost due to the bend.

what about making it a little quicker to fire by making some kind of apparatus that would dispense the correct amount of fuel into the combustion chamber AFTER it is closed? i was thinking of using those cans of butane that you use to refill lighters with, making a lever that activates its valve, then something that pushes that lever down for a certain amount of time

something that pushes down the lever being a solenoid for instance, the timing mechanism for it would be a simple capacitor with a resistor across it, then take that and splice it into one of the wires that goes to the solenoid, from a battery with a pushbutton switch in it, the capacitor acts like a block to elecrticty, but only after it is charged, while the resistor discharges it so it is ready for the next firing if the switch is not pressed, so you have a fuel switch, and an ignition switch

One of my buddies and i made a potato gun and only spent about 30 bucks and it shoots a good 250yds... the thickest PVC they make is called schedule 40 and it says sch40 on the side of the pipe thats what i recommend due to the high pressures

Yo man. Check this out. You're refering to a muff. I can't seem to find what a muff would be called here. I'm not exactly sure how to go about finding a muff. I've found that the transition pipe is called a eccentric reducer here. I dunno how you convert your measurements for your pipe sizes and fittings as well. My best guess was 4" to 2" reducer? My main question though. Is what exactly is a muff?

I have another good idee.

Take a Gas Lamp and remove the cover and Glass.

Screw-away the Gas bottle.

Bore a hole in the middle of Endcap. Put the middle part in hole and screw it with Gas bottle. Seal it!

Now put on the other parts:

Muff, Cleaning part with screwcover,reducer and barrel.

Bolt on.

Finish!

nope. the fan sits tight because its only 2-3 cm from the end cap. it doesnt go much pressure through the fan i guess since most of the volume of the explotion is in front of the fan. i have never had a 90mm fan fail on me. they all still work :)

reading your comment again makes me realize i maybe misunderstood it. if you turn on the fan, then it blows towards the 90 degree bends. so it sucks in air through the end cap and blows that through the cannon chamber, through the 90 degree bends and then out through the barrel :)

Hey. i found out that i had to put the fan near the back end of the cannon orelse it will get blown apart due to all the volume of all the co2\combustion pressure that has to go through the chamber. so since it is placed at the back of the chamber.. then it will have a minimal of gas going through it when the spark ignites the gas.i have not had one 90mm fan in a normal size cannon that has broken. on my bigger cannons i just make a attachable fan to a pipe that fits around the end of the barrel

hmm well my favorite material is pp, its usually a bit thicker then pvc. 4mm. i just got a feel for what is best. as thick as possible and mostly pp. its not pressure pvc\pp. just regular soil pipes that are 3-4 mm. but i have changed the chamber pipe to a pressure pipe i got from work. the pipe is 8mm thick and i even got a thicker pipe not long ago. crazy 11mm thick pvc :D. my newest idea is chamber and reducers in pressure pvc and only the endcap and barrel in regular pvc.
