This is by far the most complex flying machine ever built except the space shuttle! Around 1970 the europeens thought with the concorde they got the ultimate airplane in terms of speed (mach 2) and technology. But he XB-70 flew 6 years earlier and was designed for speeds of mach 3! The difference between mach 2 and 3 is gigantic; the problems for construction and manufacturing are many times bigger. My deep respect for all the engineers and technicians which have been involved in this project.
@rsch888 Most of it's structure was in stainless steel honeycomb laminate, done to make it resistant to heat, but paint didn't stick too well. At least the effort wasn't wasted though, the one plane flew for a number of years, generating much critical data that has served designers to this day. The plane itself is in Ohio on display at the Wright-Patterson air force museum.
This was the Concorde's bigger brother designed for warfare by the looks of it .. Epic! Great Video! Music fits too! Thanks for hosting this video on the web man .. I only wish I could have been a test pilot on this project back then! :-) Why don't we design things like this anymore? Those were the days!
Truly American engineering during the Cold War that will likely not be surpassed for many years in its scope for the technology introduced at the time.
@hawkeye2816 More likely, it was cancelled because of the increasing threat that high-speed surface-to-air missiles posed to manned aircraft, and the development of ICBMs that were virtually immune to defense.
@ohbinnyboy This is true, however at the time there were not missiles that could catch something moving at mach three at FL700. There is also an article I read somewhere that said that the bomber was deemed unsafe due to the wingtip vortices. It was also massively expensive and therefore only two were ever made.

You ass.... Joe Walker was a highly competent NASA Test Pilot and could hardly be labled as a "fighter jockey". As he was maneuvering his F-104 Starfighter closer to the XB-70 for better pictures of the GE engines (which is what the flight mission was that day --- to get a 'group photo' of aircraft with GE engines), his aircraft was sucked in to colliding with the Valkyrie due to the air current vortex being generated by the XB-70's flight surfaces.
@EPCBear See my followup comment, it expands on the reasons I gave for the Valkyrie being cancelled. I was in no way intending to criticize the pilot's skill in my original posting, I was merely identifying the mode of the Valkyrie's, and his, destruction. To be a pilot for NASA in the first place requires considerable skill; only the best are selected for that honor.
Ah. The beauty of the wonders man can produce, and the horrors of the global madness that necessitated this one. Still, one of the most beautiful birds I've seen. My thanks to you, Steve, for this video. I enjoyed every second of it.
well valkyrie flew before tu 144, actually the Mig foxbat i think its the mig 25 was designed to intercept the xb 70 so i dont think the russians had this kind of technology yet.
Beautifully done movie!!! Thank you so much!! My Mom and Dad both worked for North American in the early 60's and I recall attending the the rollout of the XB70 when I was a child. What a beautiful, inspiring aircraft it was and and so very far ahead of it's time. How very sad the government dropped the project. I still have the original photos and rollout ribbon and to this day they are treasures to me!
I also attended the roll-out of both ships when i was a kid living in Palmdale, Calif. My dad worked on both of the XB-70's for North American. Only saw 1 or 2 flights as most flight testing was at Edwards AFB.
Truly the most beautiful plane ever built!

My neighbor helped to construct the honeycomb skins for the XB-70, my cousin was part of the test support at Edwards AFB.

Makes one wonder what the Skunk Works has today : () I love this plane, wayyyy ahead of it's time, just like Kelly Johnson.

fastest bomber ever made, it inspired the MiG-25 and was scrapped because a fighter jockey got too close
hawkeye2816 1 year ago
@hawkeye2816 got 2 close as in it crashed into it?

interesting , the "canards" seem to be very, very similar to tu-144's ones! who is the one who copied fromthe other?
