As pitiful as this may sound, I LOVED THIS!!!!!! I used to get home at least once a year but since parents both passed on, not much. anymore. I can check on here, occasionally, and take a look at my HOMEtown! Just for that reason alone I thought the focus was great. Thanks to all who have posted rides on the roads from my memories!!
I lived in Chattanooga for 30 years & I absolutely hated driving there. Not because of the views, they were the only good part! But because of the police, other drivers & constant (de)construction. The city is great for ghost hunting, Civil War sites, river play & music, but the driving sucks!
Thanks for the ride, I drive this every year (I75 to I24 to I59 South) on my way from Ohio to the Florida Panhandle. I could go a more direct route through Nashville on I65, but I prefer the mountains of Eastern Tennessee as this area is very special to me. I also find it much more scenic and enjoyable.
wow ooltewah has changed! now all that 2 lane crap is 4 lanes! i love it now. my dad and i got in a bad wreck on the bridge in december of 09. we were at a dead stop because of a wreck up ahead and an 18 wheeler that was fully loaded couldn't stop in time (it was raining) and hit us doing 40. it bent the crap out of our frame on our denali. i was okay but my dad ruptured a disc in his back and tore his miniscus in his knee. bad day for us.
You better hurry through Chattanooga before they give you a speeding ticket or parking ticket. Watch out for traffic cameras and hidden traffic vans. Oh, better wear a bullet proof vest if the police don't shoot you the gangs will.
@brainerdrebel BTW, another trick they have actually started using is putting cameras in plastic squirrels and positioning them in trees. I only WISH I was joking.
@2:47, the Shallowford Rd. exit(or as we call it the Hamilton Place area) has also built up and is still building strong.
@4:47, Highway 27 north and south is scheduled to be reconstructed. Land purchasing begins within the next year and the actual work will start within the next 3 or so years. They're supposedly gonna knock the s curves out and widen it as well.
@ChattArea with 27 being reconstructed to become wider and no more "s" curves, I wonder if it will be renamed I-124 again. I think those were the issues that it lost interstate status.
Even though the ridge cut backs up regularly I'd hate to see it ever reconstructed since it's such a well known landmark around here. Not to mention the view on 24 heading west at that point gives travelers a view most cities don't have.
@1:37, the Ooltewah Exit is torn to hell BAD with the widening and all. That exit has also built up a lot since this vid was posted. I guess that's why most of Ooltewah is annexed into the City of Chatt. The city now extends approx 2 miles north of that exit.
@2:08, that parkway STILL isn't open. It was recently in the paper that it's scheduled to open this summer. They also plan to extend it beyond the VW plant all the way to Hwy 58.
I will be making the Trip from 60 miles north of Detroit MI to Kissimmee FL this Feb like i have done for the last 17 years for the construction Equipment auctions and i can tell u that in that time the drive has gotten much better with all the 6 laneing they have done over the years. And great video 5 stars
Aww, man ! Went to McCallie 1971-75, this bring back all sorts of memories. Still get a chill when I cross the Ridge Cut & see Lookout Mtn rising tall & majestic...Nothin' else like that sight in the world ! Needless to say, I LOVE Chattanooga!!
so why did you comment on all of the exits except exit 11, Ooltewah? Also, exit 9 won't open until late 2010 when the VW plant is finished most likely.
you should go through red bank and then up signal mountain and down through hixson. those are large parts of chattanooga that nobody really relizes lol
I hafta drive for a living. I am off today and I am spending my off-time looking at the same roads I must drive on a continual daily basis. Am I nuts? That said, I have never seen your vids until today and they are pretty cool man. I wish you would do Lookout Mountain in the spring though. I really am enjoying this.
Ahhh, good memories, drove that same route you did all the time, my whole life basically, except now I am in *&%#@* Indiana for the past 3 years. Missing Chattanooga. Thanks for posting.
I sure miss Chattanooga and who knows when I`ll ever make it back there for good. For the time being my home is Crown Point, Indiana and I guess home is whatever you make out of it. Not too bad a place, but the crime in Gary which is right down the road is nuts, murders and drivebys all the time and drugs way worse than Chattanooga has to deal with.
Very nice...you bring back memories for me, as I lived in Chattanooga for 4 years (left in mid-2006). Had a house off of East Brainerd Road, and took Exit #3 many times :)
Jim you have the best freeway videos keep making them they are excellent and the songs always go with the video and with the comments your adding are a complement to them.
Nice video as always. Good choice for taking US 27/I-124, as I always wondered what that freeway looked like(and as someone who's only traveled I-24, and not 124/27).
Very floored to see that for parts of 124/27, it sure reminds me of I-68 through downtown Cumberland, MD, as both are very narrow and curvacious. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a truck restriction on that part of 124/27, like there is on 68 through downtown Cumberland...
Camper-city!? True hey! Fairly popular 'round 'dem parts of the country?? [Read with Aussie accent trying to fake Southern-US accent] :-) Does that part of the freeway (at 5:20-5:30) meet Interstate standards???
Don't know what I like best-Chattanooga, The Outlaws or Vaughn Monroe's 1949 version of this tune...

The stretch of I-24 from just west of Monteagle to I-75 is probably my favorite Interstate that I have personally been on.

Exit 9 (Volkswagen Drive) finally opened a few weeks ago. BTW any plans to redo this stretch of I-75 in HD?

@19crash84 -It's not high on my list to re-shoot, but you never know. I have most of the Chattanooga area in HD as it is.

I love this video of I-75 in Chattanooga. Great job. As of spring break 2009, widening work was around exit 11 to make I-75 three lanes.

1:37 is at the Ooltewah exit. STILL a construction zone.
That "new" exit STILL isn't open yet.
Exit 7 is the Bonny Oaks Dr. exit.
I NEVER go past the 4th St. exit in downtown. I always get off there.

No, that section of freeway does not meet "current" Interstate standards although it would probably pass for one in Pennsylvania.
