Interesting movie too! I've seen it twice but had forgotten about this piece of music, been awhile since my last viewing.

Also noticed that brief sections of this piece sound almost exactly alike to certain passages of "In Dreams" from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Neat coincidence. =P

As far as I learned while searching when I was learning it, the name of the song is "Smiling" and it was written by Harry Gregson Williams, who did the music score for the movie.

It takes place when Creasy is alone in his room at night, really depressed (I think after he takes out his gun and considers suicide down in the garden, but can't swear to that). He grabs a bottle of whiskey and pulls the cork, then hesitates, re-corks it and instead picks up his Bible.

I've had to refresh some mostly forgotten music theory, so here's hoping I'm right.

The base chords are: A-flat (maj), B-flat (maj), E-flat (maj), and C minor.

The song starts with the left hand playing perfect 4ths and perfect 5ths instead of whole chords.

Most of the rest of the left hand is arpeggios that span one octave, with the middle note one perfect 5th up from the lower, e.g., A3-flat, E4-flat, A4-flat.

I don't think sheet music exists, certainly not for the part I invented.

I sent my attempt to explain the first seven notes to three people as an example, but nobody has yet said it worked for them or asked for more.

I find it difficult to explain music in words since it takes so many to describe a single note.

If you send me a private message I'll give you the example explanation, and if you like it, will try to explain whatever you need to figure the rest out.
