I thought it was a "forward" roll, but that might be a regional thing. Putting the word expert anywhere near this video is total paradox. Maybe I'm missing something, but this is day 1, lesson 1 on how to play the banjo. Hardly expert advice.
hello.what type of banjo do u suggest for begginers?4string?5?or maybe 6 for guitar players?each type is for different style and techinc or it's the same?thank you very much!
I really don't like playing with pics. I feel disconnected to the instrument. I just started playing but I can finger pick pretty fast. Does it matter if I don't use pics?
in order to get speed when playing banjo you will need picks, i felt the same way about picks as you, but i learned with picks and my speed and accuracy increaced.
I've been playing banjo (amateurishly) for a couple of years. I've never worn picks on my fingers and I've just found a few rolls that just come naturally. I wouldn't know if they have names.
As a beginner, I appreciate all comments and questions from seasoned players and even the newbies, like me. It helps to learn the philosophy of the banjo, from you guys who have studied it longer. I even dig the debate about what IS a roll. Thanks folks.

I guess you get what you pay for...LOL I'm a beginning picker and I don't know who this guy is but I'm steering clear of him before I learn the WRONG way to play a banjo!
the thumb alternates back and forth between the 3rd and 4th strings (not counting the 5th string drone) hence the name, "alternating thumb"
the "foggy moutain" roll that HillbillyJ talks about is not considered a "roll" (remember, there only 4 rolls), instead it is a "lick" where you double hammer the 2nd string.
To play the correct alternating thumb roll play this instead: thumb 3rd string, index 2nd string, thumb 5th string, middle 1st string, thumb 4th string, index 2nd string, thumb 5th string, middle 1st string, repeat.
this guy is playing a broken alternating thumb and by the way, there is no such thing as an "earl scruggs roll". there are only 4 rolls: Forward, Backward, Alternating thumb, and Reverse (which some call "forward-backard"). And call it the MIDDLE finger, not finger number 2.
I agree with HillBillyJ that using the standard names for the rolls is better--why confuse beginners? And where did that A-note come from in the speeded-up version??
THE Earl Scruggs roll? Earl actually made use of numerous rolls, the one hes doing there is the "alternating thumb" or "mixed" roll, there is also the "forward", "backward", "forward-reverse", and the "foggy mountain roll."
Read Earl's book. It's called "alternating thumb roll".

Hey ! it's called an in-out roll.
Scruggs rolls are where you get the melody note with your thumb.
An in-out roll is but one type of roll used in Scruggs playing.

T-I-T-M should be used to remember the order of your fingers. 3(2nd time=4)-2-5-1 is the order of the strings

eriecmo are you kidding me?
there are 4 rolls that have become known as the "Basic rolls" that begginers use. but there are hundreds of rolls you can learn.
they dont really have names. anything combination of a pattern you can use in 8ths is a roll...
