@jamespiperca wow cool no one cares about animals and releasing them its stupid i do and its hard to care about when people say no one cares but i countinue and i guess so do you
@Mr0802takahirotorren Keelbacks are completely non-venomous. A rarely spoken danger of any bites or stings however is infection or blood poisoning. Always seek professional medical attention for these types of things. In the case of snakes, a misidentification can prove fatal.
Interesting that this particular snake is developing an immunity to the Cane Toad. I am very familiar with that toad (we call them Bufo toads) as they are endemic in South Florida.
These poisonous toads are a threat to dogs who like to bite them and end up getting the venom from the toad's back into the dog's mouth. Each year, there are quite a few reported dog deaths from these nasty toads, esp. small dogs.
Fascinating video -- thanks. It's funny because just the other day I caught a smooth green snake just outside my house. (The neighbor lady thought I was nuts for picking it up.) Beautiful light green color. I released in back into the woods. (Virginia, btw)
Years ago I caught a hog-nosed snake. Their defense is interesting. Plan A - They puff up with air, hiss and strike aggressively (but not bite). Plan B - If you mess with them long enough, they roll onto their back, writhe around, then play dead. The funny thing is, if you roll them back onto their stomach, they roll onto their back again as if to say, "I'm DEAD dammit! Now go away!"
Good on you! (I'm an American and don't usually use this phrase, but I think it's used in Australia). Most people would just scream "Kill it! Kill it!" and take a hammer to it. You give us a biology lesson and return it to the "wild", where nature can carry on. I like that. Most people are ignorant and attempt to stay that way.
If that's mucus coming from the snakes mouth it would indicate it's quite unwell. I'd strongly suggest you take it to the vet asap, it may need some antibiotics, it's probably under some stress after some sort of event.
we don't even have snakes that big in Canada, and the ones we do have cant even bite you. But at least we have a good supply of large carnivorous mammals.
@DrFoolishit not in northern, i think the prairie rattler's range stops in mid or mid southern Alberta. I dont remember how far, but they're up there ! lol
You are braver than I, by measures! I try not to be scared of them, really I do - but there is no way in hell I could handle a snake as casually as you just did man!
Nice video. That was a cool snake. We watched a video in one of my bio classes a few semesters ago, and it was all about the cane toad's introduction to Australia and the awful consequences thereof. It's cool to see that these snakes are doing something about it! :D
wow, i was worried for you all way through the vid, but you seem to have a way with snakes!
my room mate had an orange one 2 month ago, but it found its way out of the terrarium and lived with us in the house somewhere. he found it, still in his room 2 weeks later and gave it to a pet shop. poor snake..
he's a feisty little chap. it's always nice to find random videos in your subscription box that you're not expecting, specially when they're this interesting
Beautiful snake and well done saving it. And thanks for the info. :)
Of course the venom toxicity issue is a bit too complex to cover quickly, but it's not generally a good idea to compare LD50 values. They say very little, if anything, about the lethality of the venom when talking about humans and when medical care is considered. Not to mention consequences if you survive, like permanent damage to tissue, organs or the nervous system.
That was really cool. Quite a pretty little snake. It responded surprisingly well to being handled I'd say. We have black king snakes around here and they just flash off like a bolt of lightning if you even come close. I've never seen a rattler or a copperhead except at the Washington Zoo but supposedly we have both nearby. Thanks for sharing that!
Such a beautiful country. Such wonderful wildlife. But, as a pom, you'd need a crowbar and 5 big mates to get me anywhere near the bush. You live near Taipans? I know you laugh at my nervousness. I know you'll say they avoid humans and don't bite without a reason. It's just the thought of such a thing on the loose.
I admire your knowledge, and the confidence you have in it. :)
haha, you know, all of the creationists were praying that you'd get bitten (and that you'd misidentified the snake). lol. Cool, very informative video.
I once caught a kingsnake while at work in a grocery store, this made quite an event for the store since I'm a girl and they expected me to freak out. But it was a little baby and pretty calm, outside of pooping on me it just hung out in my hands while I waited for someone to give him a home.

mind snakes and I used to catch them when I was a

me set it free :(
Anyway, good luck to the Keelback and bad luck
to the Cane Toads.
