"Mongolian Army (plus China, Korea) was defeat by Japanese army ". According to the official historybook「元史」 of the Mongol Empire, has been described above. However, the Kamakura shogunate could not afford to pay the reward to the samurai. So Shogunate advertised"victory is because of kamikaze" .
In other words, the kamikaze legend was political work.
@luckyprince164 yeah, the second invasion i believe, a typhoon destroyed their fleet cause they were searching for a place to land that wasnt blocked with thick long walls.
@luckyprince164 because that didnt happen in the first invasion, you should check out The Samurai documentary from history channel, it shows the invasions and explains them
Both invasions were destroyed by the storms. The first invasion, the Japanese got steamrolled, and their armies were completely beaten before the typhoons hit.
During the second invasion, the Japanese fared better in the beginning since they had built fortifications along their coast, but they would've still lost in the end if the second typhoon didn't sink the second Mongol fleet.
It was indeed a coincidence since the typhoons were rare during the season of the invasion...hence the Japan attributed it to divine intervention/divine winds.
The Mongols did land. They landed during the first invasion but didn't set up a permanent base, so they used their fleet as a base and all drowned from the 1st storm. In the 2nd invasion, the initial wave of landings met fierce resistance from the newly constructed fortifications so they were still mostly on their ships regrouping to prepare for a larger assault when the 2nd storm hit.
The incendiary devices were a korean-innovation, shooting at idiots who came forth for a amno-a-mano challenge was standard practise for mongols who were more practical. The Japanese did eventually dam up the coastlines which prevented the mongols from embarking, and those few who could were no match for the close-up tactics by the Japanese. The mongols were just unlucky, no fleet could have survived the tsunami of all time, and even the US 7th fleet would have had trouble with the same weather.
At least the Japanese are willing to show their own history somewhat accurately, and show how their armies were unprepared for the innovations brought to their shores by the Mongols from China and Korea.
If this movie were made by Americans, it would show the mongols as drooling gorillas with sticks and spears, and the battle would promptly ensue with the american army launching a devastating attack with their own giant exploding testicles, because that's how all American war movies go.
@Etimos Some of our war movies are stupid like that. Others depict US servicemen as drooling rapists and baby killers who deserve any terrible thing that happens to them.
Most of Hollywood is run by limousine liberals and rich, corrupt socialists. They're all pathological liars. We hate them as much as anyone.
If the Japanese were such pushovers, what does that make the Chinese and British? During WW II, they kicked their collective arses for years - and gave a beating to us Yanks besides.
@DrCruel I never said the Japanese were pushovers. At the time of the Mongol invasion, the Japanese were suffering from "Phalanx Syndrome", just like Greece a thousand years earlier. They spent so much time infighting that they became over-specialized at fighting other Japanese, and were completely unprepared for the new ideas and weapons the Mongols brought to their shores.
As for Britain, they were fighting a land war in Europe at the time, and China was suffering from British hegemony.
@Etimos The portion of my response regarding "pushovers" was directed against viperhanx's small monkeys/wooden armor/toy weapons comment. Sorry you got caught in the crossfire.
The Japanese were no more "completely unprepared" than anyone else. Mongol tactics were formidable, and they frequently had the advantage of initiative. However, like all other targets of the Mongols who survived the first onslaughts, the Japanese eventually adapted and adopted effective countermeasures.
@Etimos As for the fighting prowess of a Japanese soldier, it's probably as good as any other. The human monkey can be trained for any number of tasks, but when used as a soldier he just becomes another weapons platform. How he performs in combat is just as dependant on what sort of gear he's mounted with and how he's deployed as on his physical and mental attributes.
There are even advantages to especially weak and stupid soldiers. Nothing that Sun Tzu hasn't said already, of course.
@DrCruel Well, there's no real arguing with any of that, but all that is beside my original point, which was that the equipment, deployment, and tactics of the Japanese at the time of the Mongol invasion was over-specialized toward fighting japanese opponents, and was inadequate for fighting Mongols.
Yes, many other nations were also unprepared to fight the mongols, but that hardly makes Japan's position any more favorable. India put up a very significant obstacle to the Mongols, for example.
@Etimos So did the Muslims, who eventually overcame them - after repeatedly losing. But the Japanese samurai wasn't any more "overspecialized" than the combat personnel of any other society. In fact, the samurai was a fairly effective warrior, one on one.
I'd suggest that what was more of a problem for samurai was their organizational structure - something they would have shared with the Mongol tribesmen prior to the rise of Temujin. Their problem, ironically, was their individuality.
@DrCruel By Overspecialized, I'm referring to the entire concept, not just the individual warrior. This includes their organization. However, you must admit that in a battlefield rife with arrows and projectiles, Samurai were by their very design at increased risk, through their refusal to use shields. The entire japanese armor code seemed slanted against shields, and I cant think of a single class of japanese warrior who used them, whereas in Europe and the middle east, they were invaluable.
The Mongols, by contrast, fully embraced the shield, and it proved an invaluable defense on a battlefield filled with arrows, as did many chinese nations.
It always struck me as strange that despite using massive mobile shield-walls, and fortified stone castles, and despite a healthy appreciation for the bow, the Japanese stubbornly favored two-handed weapons and a military philosophy of total abandonment of self, which made the very concept of a shield seem dishonorable, instead of invaluable.
@Etimos Mongols embraced anything that would help them kill their enemies. They were not fighting for pride, or honor, but for loot. For the Mongols, terror and plague were tools just as useful as a bow or a sword.
If the Japanese samurais used shields, they would still have been at a disadvantage against the Mongols and their superior orgainization and operational art. If the Mongols would have been able to fight a mobile battle, the advantage would have been even greater.
@Etimos Mongol horse archers didn't use shields either, but they did fine.Oda Nobunaga's teppo men, later on in the 16th century, were shieldless. Unshielded Welsh archers slaughtered French footmen and knights at Angincourt.
I think you're more on track when you talk about doctrine. I will agree that the Japanese samurai considered his way of doing things "sacred", making it much more difficult to employ innovations. But it was samurai operational doctrine that was really primitive.
I admit the point and result that Japan finally prevented themselves from mongoians at the end..but i saw some japanese who think that goryeo people wanted to invade Japan and they corporated with Mongolians, but it's not true..actually,we have gotten a lot of damage (ex. 3/1 of the whole population died.at that time Goryeo was evaluated to have large number of population compared to its territory,,1/3 of them were not small number.) we were forced to corporate with the mongolians invading Japan

samurai are good with one on one fright with their samurai sword n the mongols good with group fight with their arrow on horse back that what i think :D
@kakaman05 well... actually japan was not good at anything...
those katana's were weak.. and japanese sword fight art is a gag compare to mogo's or china's sword techniques... (actually, it's dumb idea to use sword in the war.. or one on one fight.. spear like long weapons or bows r far more useful than sword) anyway.. mongo didn't care about island like japan!! cuz the cost of conquering japan would be much higher than benefits... (japan was worthless island at the time..)
@kakaman05 that's y they tried conquer japan few times and gave up when they lost few troops by huricanes..

@saruultor mongolians used iron cased bombs,, essentially like giant frag grenades, the samurai used bombs from trebuchets as well, only these wernt iron cased. just clay balls packed with gunpowder and a few pieces of metal and porcelin.
The commander at 0:59 speaks in Mongolian. He says "Bair bairandaa or oo!" which means "Take up your positions!" But it seems the actor can't say R, so he says Bail bailandaa ol oo! LOL. @kingoftheworld260 not to take their side on this, but the majority of the Mongol fleets that tried to invade japan were destroy by storms in the japanese sea, only fractions of the origional armies went on to fight the japanese, both times
@tomoko5555 Nah it's actually Samurai vs Mongols. Chinese and Koreans were annexed by the Mongols therefore they were all Mongols at that time, just like Hawaiians are American
not only was it cowerdess to use poison arrows how cowerdess to use modern motors on there boats at 3:52 no way to guys can paddle that boat fast enough lmao lol hahahahaha....
Never knew this history till I looked up on wiki. Well looks like in the past Mongols were a great overpowering people. Now they're a poor piece of shit. So after all we Samurai wins LOL
@kiknarse LULWUT? Japan, have never been a slave to anyone, that is one of our proud things out of many. Let me explain what is exactly being slave because you completely sound like retard Chinese under CCP mind control, For example Mexico and pretty much all of Latin American nations were slaves of Span, just like how Korea, Taiwan was Japan's. Yes if you're technically COLONIAL RULED by someone, you're slave. Japan have never been a colony in the whole history. Suck on that CCP's slave dog.
@kingoftheworld260 ..Every nation has been controlled by another sometime in their past...Asians, Caucasians, Africans, Arabs, Spanish, etc etc...even Japan was and still is occupied and controlled by the U.S today, as long as there are foreign military troops in ones land, they are never truly free and I can guarantee you that if the Japanese government asked the U.S military to leave, the U.S would not...
This must be a joke. I'd say the only thing that might be interesting versus the HORDE in open battlefield might have been the Troops of Alexander the Great and also the Roman legions.
the problem is that they didn't understand each other, the Japanese treat war as a ceremony. I fought on their terms, the mongols didn't stand a chance, they weren't even given the the to do what they do best... close quarter combat.
The only thing that saved the world from Mongols were ''miracles'' like the Kamikaze and the death of Ogedei Khan that saved European civilization entirely.
Chinese Sung Dynasty was also fighting Mongols during the year 1274, but too bad the Sung emperor surrendered in 1276, and the remaining Sung Dynasty's imperial army was destroyed by Mongols in 1279.
Obviously you don't understand Chinese history. Sung is the name of the dynasty, but Sung is not the name of the 4-year-old Chinese emperor. The emperor's family name is Chao (in mandarin) or Trieu (in middle-age Chinese).
I'm talking about the Sung Dynasty, I'm not talking about the 4-year-old emperor.
Chinese emperors did not use their family names to name their dynasty, instead they used the name of their feudatory to name their dynasty.
Except for the names of the last three dynasties (Mongol Yuan, Han Ming, Manchu Qing), all the other Chinese dynasties got their names from the feudatory of the founding emperor.
Love how the rowing boats the mongols are coming ashore in produce a massive bow wave despite only being paddled by four guys with cricket bats... methinks there's a concealed outboard motor used a bit too enthusiastically!
This TV drama was 50 story series in 1 year. 1 story was 45 minutes on every Sunday night. It is relax time, therefore this drama had comical character. Children look it also.
This drama had the typhoon KAMIKAZE scene, but it is not uploaded into YouTube.
Face it, the Mongols were mighty but they met their match on more than one occasion. The Vietnamese, Javanese and Japanese all bear the distinction of defending their home turf effectively.
@TheGreaterGood80 Mongolian fleet got destroyed twice by weather when they tried to sail to japan . Plus they never got further then Poland , polish heavy cavalry obliterated them .
@sewagedweller OMG all this Polish Chest-thumping, Subedei's Mongols annihilated the Poles, the Hungarians and even the Teutonic Knights that faced them. That's one of the primary reasons why Poland and most of Eastern Europe became backward countries during the Middle Ages.
@lv83bloodknight they would be speaking mongolian? just like the chinese, koreans, persians, and russians who were conquered by the mongols haha good one
In reality, most of these invaders were Chinese and Koreans (under Mongol officers) there weer only so many Mongols, and most them on the eastern front were only so numerous for managerial positions.
Since China and Korea were controlled, their populations were conscripted for this japan job.
THIS IS THE ONE OF FAKE HISTORY MOVIE. YES KHUBILAI KHAN SENT WARRIORS TO JAPAN BUT TRUE IS THEY CAN NOT CROSS THE SEA BECAUSE VERY STRONG STORM DISTROYING THEM. JAPAN VERY LUCKY THAT TIME.
I may not like Japan for Nanking massacre but I must say that Japanese are very hard working, clever and well organized people .When in 19th century Europe and US wanted to make Japan just next colony Japanese learned what was neccesary to modernise their country and 40 years after humililation from US and UK kicked Russians out of Korea
in history that soldiers not real mongols because mongols were 3 milion populatin and fight in three fronts thats most of the soldiers korean and chinese they know how to build ship and they good swimmer real mongol men afraid from water because mongols cant swim
@erkhesod i think that's why mongols could not control over japan. The soldiers from korea and china could not fight or i would say they dont know how to (which is why they could not protect their own country) so mongol just could not win. Khubilai khan just thought it would be so wasteful to lose real mongol warrior over such a wars or things like that so he sent other nations people...
@violet0205amethyst Well I would say Chinese fight much better than the Poles and Russians, at least they withstood the Mongol onslaught for 80 years in close proximity and fell after the Europeans were conquered
The way these Mongolian soldiers speak is that the real Mongol language in this vid? I know these are not Chinese because I SPEAK BOTH Mandarain and CANTONESE. Iam HongKong chinese.
@kero7642 we commendeered korean and chinese sailors of course with a host of horde on board but the provision ended damn foreign admirals could have warned us that provisions are important in blockades and plus the fucking tsunami :P
No, but his descendent Kublai Khan did have a navy. He built his first naval force to destroy the Chinese Southern Song Dynasty. Once they were eliminated and Korea was subjugated, Kublai then turned his sights on Japan, since they had seriously snubbed him in a diplomatic exchange. Twice he sent a navy to conquer Japan, and both times were destroyed by giant storms at sea. Apparently Kublai chose the worst time of the year to have his navy set sail.
Japan would not have had a chance against the Mongols the Bulgars were the only ones to put up a good fight against the Mongols only to be beaten by the Mongols sometime later. After all the Japanese were beaten by the Koreans in 10 major battles Like the Manchus the Mongols, Koreans, and Chinese having been on the mainland of Asia knew warfare among themselves to near perfection.
@dragonseptor The Mongols were defeted more times than against the Bulgars, to come back and get the job done later. But they were defeted in Ain Jalut against the Mamluks, a defeat they never could revenge.
all I can say is, Japan is made by brave warriors willing to gave their lives for his forgotten word and that is Samurai. I'm a pure Filipino but I admire The samurai's as a real brave warriors in ASIA
I gotta say I laughed a bit at that guy who started crying over stuff.

@doggyzexx Japan is nothing...until it stop being a pawn, a slave to America. You have nothing to be proud of until then.
Japan was respected back then...up until Nanking...and definately not since it became an AMERICAN pawn.

@kiknarse Japan is nothing?????? That's like saying Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane or Michael Jordan are nothing!
LOL
kingoftheworld260 1 year ago
@kiknarse LULWUT? Japan, have never been a slave to anyone, that is one of our proud things out of many. Let me explain what is exactly being slave because you completely sound like retard Chinese under CCP mind control, For example Mexico and pretty much all of Latin American nations were slaves of Span, just like how Korea, Taiwan was Japan's. Yes if you're technically COLONIAL RULED by someone, you're slave. Japan have never been a colony in the whole history. Suck on that CCP's slave dog.
kingoftheworld260 1 year ago
@kingoftheworld260 ..Every nation has been controlled by another sometime in their past...Asians, Caucasians, Africans, Arabs, Spanish, etc etc...even Japan was and still is occupied and controlled by the U.S today, as long as there are foreign military troops in ones land, they are never truly free and I can guarantee you that if the Japanese government asked the U.S military to leave, the U.S would not...

the problem is that they didn't understand each other, the Japanese treat war as a ceremony. I fought on their terms, the mongols didn't stand a chance, they weren't even given the the to do what they do best... close quarter combat.

Chinese Sung Dynasty was also fighting Mongols during the year 1274, but too bad the Sung emperor surrendered in 1276, and the remaining Sung Dynasty's imperial army was destroyed by Mongols in 1279.

@0821ori
TheXanian 1 year ago
@0821ori

In reality, most of these invaders were Chinese and Koreans (under Mongol officers) there weer only so many Mongols, and most them on the eastern front were only so numerous for managerial positions.
Since China and Korea were controlled, their populations were conscripted for this japan job.

in 1905. It is great progress.

in history that soldiers not real mongols because mongols were 3 milion populatin and fight in three fronts thats most of the soldiers korean and chinese they know how to build ship and they good swimmer real mongol men afraid from water because mongols cant swim
erkhesod 1 year ago
@erkhesod i think that's why mongols could not control over japan. The soldiers from korea and china could not fight or i would say they dont know how to (which is why they could not protect their own country) so mongol just could not win. Khubilai khan just thought it would be so wasteful to lose real mongol warrior over such a wars or things like that so he sent other nations people...

Genghis had a navy??
hallmonitor98 1 year ago
@hallmonitor98
