Though I disagree with the total discontinuance of psychiatry, I do agree that we have only learned a limited amount about mental health. I agree that it has caused a lot of problem where psychologists didn't know what they were doing and they caused mental problems where they couldv'e been helping, but their labels kept them from helping. I've personally had this happen to me. To the credit of psychology though another psychologist told me my shrink was an idiot.
@ki4jgt Psychology and Psychiatry are two separate fields. As for therapy, most therapy experiences are failures due to the patient, rather then the therapist. Therapy tends to exist to strip people of socially detrimental defense mechanisms. Your sub conscious doesn't want to stop doing what it thinks is protecting it. It takes time, and work. And it can be painful. My professors always taught us any less than 6 months of therapy isnt enough time to diagnose you properly. If you rush, it fails.

I however did not allow these defenses to stop me from living or trusting people, just to relate to people and in a sense read them. Because he was trying to drop those barriers (that's all he could see) he didn't see that those barriers were who I was and that I was happy with them and they allowed me to make a lot of friends. I talked people through suicides and other things with them. I was automatically assumed to be making a barrier of antisocialism. Since most of the people in my life had told me I was nothing in one way or another his (professional) caused me to have a mental break down. I felt that everything
in my life was a lie. There was no hope. There were no dreams. Every dream I had ever had was a lie to myself and the world was just full of evil and no such thing as good.

I have a family member that suffers from Schizophrenia & without his medication he would be dead by now or in jail or a mental hospital. With the proper medication this disease can be controlled & a person that suffers with this disease can live a fairly normal life.

Maybe they're over the top, sure. But i'm glad there's someone saying it. I was treated for mental illness, and before they found the "right drug for me" they gave me all sorts. Including, an injection that gave me an epileptic fit, others gave me vivid nightmares, and another that wouldn't allow me to actaually keep still for two weeks.
Also, i've since learnd that in the sixties anyone showing my symptoms were systematically put down and had their frontal lobe removed.

A lot of psychiatric drugs are dodgy... I've never known ANYONE helped by psychiatric drugs... NO-ONE I've known has been cured... they've just learned to manage their condition.
Psychiatry DOES have some good sides however things like Electroshock therapy are so 'middle ages' it's unbelievable!

if it weren't for the psychiatric help and the medications, i would have hanged myself, once i tried, i called the doctor at 1AM and told him i was gonna kill myself, he drove at 1AM in the pouring rain to talk me down.
