Imo, Sabicas is not a good composer. His pieces all sound the same, hardly distinguishable from a montage of virtuosic warm-up techniques. I've never heard a piece by Sabicas where a musical idea was exposited and developed. It's similar to listening to some of the lesser works of Chopin and Liszt: all technique, little composing; one flourish after another without context. It's more like mood music or "wow" music, depending on how you want to look at it.
What is the name of this song? Trying to find a video with a male dancer on here dancing exceptionally well to this song. I some how deleted it and can't remember his name.
The best ever were Ramon Montoya,Nino Ricardo,Sabicas,Diego del Gastor, Manolo de huelva, these people played the real flamenco ,the others good tecnnicians they lost on tecnhique and too jazz sounds.
There is no doubt that Montoya and Paco de lucia are great in their own right. Sabicas however played flamenco with beauty and style which has yet been touched by any flamenco soloist. As much as I like Montoya his playing is no where close to Sabicas and Paco would be the first one to tell you how beautiful Sabicas played and what a tremendous influence he had on his aproach to playing flamenco.
I totally agree. Sabicas had a unique poetic beauty in his music that has not been replicated by anyone as yet. He is in a separate league of his own. There are too many imitators and frauds out there, ie, a "wanna-be"
My first flamenco records were of Sabicas. My teacher Pedro Cortes spent a lot of time with Sabicas in New York. Sabicas was at his home almost every day when he was growing up because he was close friends with Pedro's father. All of the greats of that era came through his house and he studied with ALL the best players from the 1960's and early 70's. My years performing with and learning from Pedro were a blessing. I guess you could say I am indirectly from the lineage of Sabicas...am I a fraud?
One can be said to be the best only if one aspect is measured. Their technic may not be the best but I Iike the expression of Carlos Montoya and mostly Mario Escudero.
During the 1960s and 1970s I was an avid flamenco "aficionado". Eager to learn the guitar and cante, I made the acquaintance of a number of respected professional guitarists and singers. Invariably they considered Sabicas, Nino Ricardo, Melchor de Marchena, the Habichuelas, Paco Cepero and Paco de Lucia, to name a few, to be the major talents.
Carlos Montoya was felt to be a minor player, with erratic "compas" and flashy but somewhat sloppy technique.
Grisha Goryachev vids too. Among the young guys, technically, I think he's one of the best. If he inserts a little more passion into his playing he can become one of the alltime greats I believe. What do you think about his musicality, not his musicianship, which is obviously topnotch.
forgot to add that music is not a competition, unless a musician chooses to compete of course, and these guys are all beyond that level, but yeah fans will compare naturally.
There is absolutely noone that can reproduce the flamenco style on guitar like Carlos Montoya! Paco has surpassed him in technique and so have others but get this through your head,-- nobody can play like Carlos Montoya-- not even Paco. It is impossible to reproduce his expression. He is second to no one in flamenco guitar!
Not one of my favorite Sabicas compositions but He was by far the best flamenco guitarist who ever lived and all these other phonies couldn't shine his shoes. When I was about 14 or so my wonderful father took me and my brother to see him perform in Manhattan and had the honor to go back stage and meet him and take pictures with him.I will treasure those pictures forever.I miss him.
@Louragu I agree with you wholeheartedly. Sabicas was probably one of the greatest ever...but there are many good players such as Ramon Montoya whom Sabicas learned from. Listen to some Pepe Martinez and Moraito etc.
you can hear from this just how robby krieger of the doors was heavily influenced by sabicas and incorporated flamenco styled techniques into their music. krieger did a great job with his interpretations but sabicas is clearly the master.

Did I ever knock his playing? No. He is a fantastic guitarist. It's just that his weave isn't up to the same standards as his playing. By the way lern 2 type. ;-)
To answer the earlier question,Paco de Lucia is the genius after Sabicas, who "modernized" flamenco.
Other great flamenco guitarits are Paco Cepero, Manolo Sanlucar and the eccentric gypsy player, Diego Gastor to mention just several. Just do a YouTube search.
Paco de Lucia himself said Sabicas' example will stand for all time...he must have produced around 50 albums, hopefully they all will be saved digitally for posterity.
Some have been already edited on CD format. There also lots of guitar recopilations, like that of the defunct label Hispavox (catalogue now managed by Capitol and EMI Spain), for example.
I had the great honor of watching Sabicas perform live in the early 1970's, at the Wilshire Ebell in Los Angeles and at East Los Angeles College. He will always reign as El Rey Del Flamenco in my heart

Sabicas plays granainas. However, granainas has no fixed compas; so there is no dance for granainas.

Loureag, you sound like a starstruck teen who never grew out of that concert experience you
cite. Sabicas was great, but Carlos Montoya was just as good, and Paco DeLucia has long since surpassed them both in my opinion. But then
opinions are like...,as you probably know.
