This of course is up for debate because some Slaves were treated like pack mules and punished severely if escape attempts were made. But these were acts committed by private Slave holders trying to make max profits(BASTARDS). They however had nothing to do with the military. Because Slave holders were excluded from service.
I am not saying that many Blacks did not have a right to want to leave the South in hopes for a better life. Which unfortunately they never found. But some Southern officers felt that the Black regardless of their status in society should have stuck with their home states. Hell, White Southern soldiers were killed for desertion as were Northern soldiers. This of course depends on point of view. But do consider that 60,000 Blacks did fight for the Confederacy. It's a hard fact.
I know I am supposed to appreciate this film for what it is. And that is entertainment in the form of a War drama. But the condescending nature that comes across is one that alienates the Southern half of the country. This isn't WW2, the South was not committing genocide, they were not invading and toppling countries left and right. Films like this inspires people to associate the Confederacy with organizations like the Nazis. It's an unfair assessment.
@StonewallJackson26 Having watched Glory many times, there was no Anti-Southern sentiment in the movie. it was just a story of a black union regiment. they can't make movies about black soldiers without somehow being Anti-confederate? The worst part of the movie is when the white union officer shoots a black soldier from another regiment saying "don't touch that white woman"....nothing about it was anti-confederate.
@Rao665 Ok. In the film. Col Shaw reads a proclamation of the Confederate States of America. In it he says claims that every Black found in Union uniform was executed. For one, there is no evidence of that at all. Now Fort Pillow was partially a race driven massacre, but those events were not institutionalized as the film leads you to believe.
Now race was not the only reason why a Southern soldier might have treated a Black POW badly. The idea of being traitors was in question.
I know this might be a tough pill to swallow. But did you people know that there were 60,000 Blacks that fought for the South. Literally Blacks who fought and died wearing grey.
I respect any soldier that fights on the battlefield knowing that they might not survive. That takes courage. And I respect that to the fullest. Regardless the race, it makes no difference.
Just saying that Southern soldiers were not fighting to keep Blacks oppressed. They perceived the War in a different way, that's all. It's not like there was a genocide against Blacks.
I don't like this film because it promotes a point of view of the War that in essence demonizes Southern Soldiers.
@StonewallJackson26 so just sayin...the American PEOPLE broke Native American-US treaties. Besides...why are you bitching about it anyways? This country would still be confined in the original atlantic states if they hadn't done anything.
@Rao665 For sure. Just please understand that the average Southern soldier was not evil. They were poor to middle class farmers. The rich bastards on both sides never fight.
@StonewallJackson26 As in most history, the "rich bastards" who "never fought" were actually officers. Robert E. Lee came from a moneyed family, so did many union generals and officers. Money doesn't equate to how evil one is, although it does correlate, a rich man isn't necessarily evil.
@Rao665 Well in this case the rich are who started the War. The rich slave holders refusing to give up their wealth. And the radical Republicans in the North choosing War with New England providing the funding. And where do you think most New England wealth was generated from?
Textile Mills.
And where do you think these textile mills purchased their cotton. It's just a very complicated topic. The Civil War will always be a hotly contested debate.
For the days we live, and the times we died. noting can compare to the time of the once who lived, of which had died for the name of freedom and liberty.
I also forgot to say that James Horner did a brilliant job on the soundtrack. This one reminds me a lot of Apollo 13 (which he also composed the score for).
@MissLeopard28 Yes does have resemblances with Titanic and Avatar soundtracks too, which he also composed! I dunno, the guy knows his way around an orchestra
I love learning about the Civil War (and I'm a woman). I watched "Glory" for the first time in 8th grade history class and fell in love. It is so moving, especially because it is a true story. So many great actors, too! Denzel Washington, Matthew Broderick, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman were PHENOMENAL!
I tried to show my girlfriend Glory. She found it hard to care for the characters, found it hard to believe in a film with no love story. But, it IS a love story. Between brothers. Between races. For all men women and children of all the countries and all the religions and beliefs. This is a film about courage, sacrifice, and the desire to stand up against tyranny and opression so that, one day , our children's children won't have to.
@Mimegods You're either being an ass, or just plain jealous. You're just trying to bring them down to your level. You think people on the internet are like you; a no-life. Why can't you just accept the truth?
@durbaq It might sound biased saying this but I have not met to many women who see the way as you explained. If a film has nothing to do with a woman's love or her own interest they cannot relate it as a love story.
It's also a fight against hate, against fear, and against corruption. They were not fighting to win the war, but they fought for the respect that had been denied to them by the country; a respect that was won on a field of battle, fighting the true fight for freedom.
@StonewallJackson26 just sayin, the american PEOPLE eead "Pioneers" were the ones who continuously broke Native american treaties. the american government sent troops to keep the peace, but really...if even the citizens of the US aren't going to abide by treaties, you seriously think the US government is going to point heir guns at their own citizens to protect the rights of native americans? not likely.
Seceding would be like a son saying to his mother, "I hate you. You aren't giving me any rights, so i'm gonna move out and never come back." that's the attitude the south had to the north, and it just doesn't work that way.
@SebsySweet True. It often seems that the main difference between a "war of independence" and a "civil war" is whether or not the people who chose to leave the original body won.
@unlost It was more like a band breaking up. The Confederacy thought the United States was going in a direction they could not support and, feeling that the "United States" was an alliance more like we consider the United Nations or NATO rather than a singular country, believed they had the right to leave and go do their own thing.
'Glory' is a great film about a group of very brave and determined American soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. The film is fantastic, the music beautiful and it has nothing, in any way at all, to do with Nazis.
@chip64c I was asking a rhetorical question. deep impact ain't that current. i was referring to avatar, when they're climbing up those floating mountains
@scottndawn obviously you're a confederate and would agree to have slaves and also you wouldn't mind the required use of a passport to go from Georgia to Washington DC.
Not to condone slavery, but calling someone a confederate and wanting slaves yadda yadda misses the point of the Civil War, which had nothing to do with slavery, and also misses that Lincoln in fact only "freed" the slaves in states out of federal control. It was in affect(the emancipation proclamation) a tool used to win the war and preserve the union, NOT to "free all slaves". This actually was an act of hypocrisy, as he freed the slaves of his enemy, but not his own.
well true, but its the idea... that comes along with American Civil War. "Freeing the slaves"
I mean think of it, Hitler, one of the most Evil men, messed up mass murderers ever to have walked the earth. When people hear Hitler they think: Nazi, Jew Killer, Evil Dictator...
but what they over look is that he was a military genius, a brilliant leader for being able to rally Germany from the economical crisis of WWI and create a new government or his people.
@ilovecinwil If your talking about the slaves he didn't free, they were border states. It was a pragmatic decision to allow some of the border states to allow slavery (just for the time being) because these people were tossing up whether to throw their lot in with the north or south. By not forcing the issue of slavery onto these people he could be sure they would take his side, until he had dealt with the south. two years later, they were freed aswell. The union wasnt NEARLY as racist as south
@ilovecinwil furthermore, Slavery had already been banned in the north. There was an enitre political party (that was extremely prominent in the north in the 1850's called The Free Soil Party. This political parties entire platform was the abolition of slavery (not necessarily for ethical means however - slavery by the 1850's was an economically stagnant institution). If the the civil war was entirely about preserving the union, then why was the union threatened? Because the south ceded.
SO AS TO PRESERVE AND EXPAND THE INSTITUTION OF SLAVERY.
If the north hadn't put an end to the south seceding, all the western states California, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Arizona - all the southern states (such as Texas, Florida) etc, ALL THESE STATES WOULD HAVE SUPPORTED SLAVERY.
If the South had seceded succesfully only a small belt of states in the North East woud not have actually supported slavery. Slavery was what all the other issues boiled down to.
@MrFrank8675309 If it is indeed true that you are related to Mosby then our ancestors rode and fought together. If the war happened today I wouldn't hesitate to join the Confederate ranks.
glad my history teacher showed us this at college a few weeks ago, a great movie, I was lucky enough to find out that my dad had the movie at home, and the theme is epic
Glory. A great american movie. no, scratch that. A great movie all around. And may those who watch it know the mistakes we made in our nation's past so that it may never happen again. And a great sound track.
@joekopor You are totally right in saying that the system of the USSR and modern China is/was not Communism. It is socialism. In true, Marxist communism, there is no government at all and basically everybody sits around singing kum-bah-yah. The problem with Marxism is that it has not and will not ever exist, because human nature is selfish. So IMO, communism is just as bad as Beck says because real world communism is oppressive, and "true" communism is pie-in-the-sky.
btw.. the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was reactivated on November 21, 2008.. i saw them in a ceremony.. what a beautiful site it was.. to see the soldiers and the flag waving :)
@DaCyanWaffle123 it makes me cry too. its funny, after serving in the us military, i can't watch any of the war movies i used to watch as a kid without crying. there is a bond among servicemen that is second only to God and family
I remember watching this video 3 yrs ago in my History class which was really historical and really sad Especially when the guy let his horse go free just before charging fort Wagner.
you're right. Fascism is a scourge of the world. It started the most destructive war in history. But, MrMcGale, I encourage you to look into communism and socialism and see what they REALLY are, not what the media says they are. You would be suprised to find out that Jesus's views were socialistic in nature. Do not look to past governments for communism or socialism either, as there is none to be found there except in parts. All I'm saying is, don't give in to the american hype.
One of the best movies by far. And this is coming from a girl who tends to not like war movies, much less Civil War movies. Also, very historicly accurate.
This of course is up for debate because some Slaves were treated like pack mules and punished severely if escape attempts were made. But these were acts committed by private Slave holders trying to make max profits(BASTARDS). They however had nothing to do with the military. Because Slave holders were excluded from service.

Good movie, good entertainment. This movie however only showed one side of the coin. Not very historically accurate either. But good entertainment.

@DaCyanWaffle123 it makes me cry too. its funny, after serving in the us military, i can't watch any of the war movies i used to watch as a kid without crying. there is a bond among servicemen that is second only to God and family

brianthao102 10 months ago
you're right. All I'm saying is, don't give in to the american hype.

im a fan of the civil war and I love Robert Shaw!
AND IM A GIRL! :D
EllieMillerChipette 10 months ago
One of the best movies by far. And this is coming from a girl who tends to not like war movies, much less Civil War movies. Also, very historicly accurate.
