  • 2. I am also confused about breathing. I don't know whether to hold my breath, breathe through my mouth and close my nose, or any other combination of opening/closing the throat and nose. Will all of this come with time/trial and error?

  • 1. Hey man, can you help me out? I just started playing the talkbox w/ my guitar a couple days ago. I'm trying to get the cleanest sound possible (no sound coming from my mouth/throat other than the consonants). But many of the sounds I don't even hear while talkboxing yet I hear them in recordings. Do you think what I'm trying to do is possible or am I reaching too high? (I've also heard even Roger Troutman make some throat sounds when talkboxing live.)

  • Terrific video :)

  • Dude, that video explained everything I needed to find out about how to mouth words. Thank you so much!

  • BOOTZILLA

  • are those "i voted" stickers on your desk? good for you for voting.

  • good tut but you look gay as fuck :(

  • Thanks for this. I just got my talkbox and am having a hard time with the words like "cataracts" so this is very helpful. It's going to take a while for me to get in the habit of emphasizing and remembering when to, but it takes practice. You do this really well.

  • what keyboard are u using bra?

  • hi, can you help me for the setting of my DX 100?

  • If i got a talk box will it work on any keyboard and what settings would i have to put the keyboard on

  • 3:56: "Cataracts! .. a funky way to say a strange word that has to do with eye condition."

    8)

  • so if i buy a rocktron banshee talk box, do i need to buy one of those small keyboards?

  • @bagofrandom heck nah...any keyboard would work

  • ........a biological psychologist?

  • Yes, a biological psychologist. You can do a "Google search" to learn more about it :) To be fair, perhaps "neuroscience" is probably a better description.

  • @talkboxmayhem I remember learning about biological psychology in my psychology class. It's definitely a real profession, although many biological theories in psychology aren't really accepted; for example, the theory that dreaming is just random neural impulses. However, I'm sure there's a lot of those bio-psychologist into how the brain works and reacts to things or eyesight and stuff like that.

  • hey i cant say the 'g' and 'n' sounds... how do you do it?

  • thanks a lot man good video, was having problems with C H words ect thanks man

  • where do u buy a dx100

  • thanks mayhem. I have been intrigued by this lately; the effect is amazing compared to antares autotune.

  • I guess I'll weigh in on this whole "mic" thing: you would use a microphone for talkboxing as you would a regular singer - the singer doesn't need a microphone to practice or perform in front of small crowds. On the other hand, a microphone is necessary for recording or for playing live (you'll also need a PA system here!). In this video, I used the mic in my camera to record the sound (which is about as loud as a regular singer), in the Digital Love vid, I used my Shure SM58 with my Delta44.

  • @talkboxmayhem DJ Mpact used to say it''s NO part of the talkbox magic.

  • do you need anything more than the talk box and this keyboard?

  • nope i have the same talk box but i use mine with guitar, the rockaatron acts as a amp in it self so ou wont need any thing else

  • not really, but if you were preforming live you would need a mic (of course lol) and a PA system! but you probably could've guessed that if you wanted to use the talk box live :D

  • why would you need a mic? The tube captures your voice without the mic.

  • i said when your preforming live it needs miced (i dont know how to spell it, (sounds like: my-k-d) You might be able to hear it through the tube but the audience wouldn't. That mic makes it louder so everyone can hear it, for practicing of course you dont need one

  • the thing is that when you speak into the tube the voice gets modified and it is outputted into a speaker not trough your mouth.

  • well my banshee talkbox does not do that. It sends the guitar signal through the tube into my mouth. You don't talk into the tube, you mouth some vowels or words like mayhem said. I have never talked into my tube, i just mouth the words a vowels.

  • I know. So does the modified voice sound come out your mouth or does it come out trough your speakers?

  • mine comes out of my mouth

  • how come? It's common sense, there is no way.If that's the case, then how come in this video he doesn't use a mic and the voice can be heard?

  • his voice can be heard because it is coming out of his mouth! believe me if your in a quiet room your camera can easily pick the sound up, why don't you just send mayhem a question and ask him. Look in the related videos at the one called "Mr. Talkbox Promo Concerts EXTENDED" he is using a microphone because he is live and with a huge band around him not even he could hear it.

  • You mean that the tube inputs and outputs at the same time? That I don't think so. But I will ask 'talkboxmayhem'.

  • Here's what mayhem told me in the PM he sent me:

'No, you only need a microphone to record yourself.'

Which means that you don't need a mic only if you want to record your normal voice. YOU WERE WRONG!

  • read "uberstupidmove"'s comment, also here is a little review on the pedal from guitar center's website

"ok this pedal is the best freaking pedal out there it comes with everything u need and u can get the best sound out of it. "the one thing u need to know b4 u buy it is that the sound doesn't go to ur amp it goes straight threw the tube and u make the talk part there. it needs a mic next to it to hook it up to an amp.""

that was the guys exact words, so now who's wrong?????

  • erm, As a talkbox user, I can say that you sir, are wrong. A talkbox is essentially a pre-amp that is Air Tight with a tube coming out of it. The only way to get the sound out is through the tube. It will come out of your mouth, but without a mic it will sound like voices in your head. It should also be noted mayhem uses a Mic in his videos, therefore you loose even harder. Next question.

  • I guess you're right. I just realized that in this video the mic is in the camera because he talks without the tube and you can hear him.

  • I'm sorry you feel that way.

  • but a microphone is handy to pronounce letters better like a d or a t.. you dont need to speak out loud but the t-sound you make when saying that letter is a leyer over the talkboxsound and that helps better

  • The tube just moves the sound from the box to your mouth, if you want others to hear it you need a mic.

  • thank you "uberstupidmove" that's what I've been trying to tell "xxxogchris"

  • thanks for clearing that up, I'd been starting to think i was wrong and that something was wrong with my talkbox :D

  • i think its arround 280$

  • hey, do you need more than the keyboard and the talkbox to achieve this voice sound?

  • it takes a woman to make a comment on someone's eyebwrows in a tutorial video...

  • It sure does :D

  • check his face move when he goes on the talkbox!!!......changes to mr groove! ha ha!

  • is that your mic in your keyboard next to your midi??

  • I just built my first talkbox, and I'm having alot of fun with it. However, I'm having a little trouble talking with it. When I try to talk, the tuba always ends up plugged by my tongue or cheek. Any tips, anyone?

  • how much did your keyboard cost?

  • That was so awesome! Thanks for explaining everything! Your the only vid so far I've seen that explained how the talkbox works. You might want to close your closet etc tho for us pitiful ADD types who wonder if your shirts are ironed or weather you may actually be one of the few men who REALLY do your own ironing. HA! ( Alf voice) Just kidding. Thanks again! That was great! ;-D

  • THanks so much for this video. THis answered a lot of questions.

I was wondering if you had to use techniques from ventrilliquism to get the B T S K and CH sounds.

    Can you demonstrate the alphabet?

  • Very nice tutorial, helped confirm some theories that I had. I'm just starting with a talkbox now, though combined with guitar. This is very helpful, thank you.

  • nice!

  • do you need to know the piano to do the synthesizer thing and the talkbox?? someone answere pls

  • if you don't know how to play anything on the keyboard, it will be hard for you, cuz you have to hit the keys to get the notes you want. so yeah, if you know something about playing piano, it will be much easier.

  • or use Reason... yes, it can be done!

  • Does sending the sound through your nose help any (as for sounds like m or n)?

  • "keep that throat open" - that's what he said.

  • do you have to sing at all?

  • negative. you just pretty much whisper the words into the microphone

  • Dude....Thank you for the info.

  • this dude has some nice shirts...hehe...maybe he should close his closet, I think I saw a Moth fly outta there...

  • sigh...

  • helps a lot!! thankss!! i mean it!! =D

  • thanx so much, just what i was looking for

  • what kind of synthesizer are you using?

  • I can't afford half this crazy stuff, but I am going to figure this all out anyway!

  • lol everyone including me has the rocktron banshee...i bet rocktron is makin bank!

  • cool. is it too expensive?

  • That was very helpful. I'm thinking about getting a talk box to add more variety to my music and I will definitely refer back to this video if I need help. Great job!

  • helped me out alot thanks!

  • hahaha Mayhem.. you are funny.. awesome tut.

  • Thanks, man. Very helpful to me. Appreciate you spending all this time making videos that help out beginners such as myself. Keep them coming please!

    Keep on funkin!

  • great video!!

  • this helped so much.

  • Comment removed

  • lol thats sounded so dirty...

  • its yo boyy mayhamm

ur killing me mayham your killing me

  • How is it hooked into your keyboard, through that preamp?

  • say you are just starting completely from scratch on talkboxing...what skill level would you need with the piano to get some of the basics of this? cuz its frikin dope!!!

  • wich one is better rocktron banshee or heli. i dont know wich one to get

  • that really helped out a lot man, thanks!

  • Can you use it with a normal midi keyboard

  • hey like the video! Question i have the banshee talk box but cant get it to work i plug it in to my piano and hear it in my tube but my mic dose not pick it up like yours do you need a mic because the videos ive seen some dont show? maybe i need a better mic or piano? what do you think it is!can you text me how to hook it up or maybe you could make a video on how to hook up the talkbox it would be a big help to us talkbox fans please and thank you!

  • how are you suppose to position it in your mouth like on your cheek or on your teeth

  • teeth. i personally use the front of my mouth rather than the side.

  • You can buy one at any guitar center...

    try using ebay also...

  • yea just dont use any vinyl tubing you get off eBay... that shit goes in and out your mouth like a mofo

  • I like a little nasal sound in my talk box sounds.

  • Ahh, things make more sense now, thank you, would you say the Banshee is the driver to go for?

  • omg you look just like kirk from gilmore girls

  • hahahahaha, 4 real

  • ik!

  • A good choice to replace DX100 is Native Instruments FM8 VSTi. I tried with my banshee and works!

  • what patch you use on the FM8?

  • could you hook this up to a guitar?

  • Yes. In fact, the talkbox he's using is marketed for guitar.

  • Mayhem, I'm thinking about getting started in talk boxing. I'm not really wanting to sink a lot of money into this, but from what I've seen so far, what i need is a banshee and a synthesizer. Any suggestions? I was thinking about getting the yamaha dx 100. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • you could always make a "ghetto talkbox" ... its cheap, and effective... until you decide that you really want one, that is.

  • hi i like the sound from the talkbox and i just see around about that "thing" to create weirds sounds and if is there a program pc to emulate that talkboxin and ... here i am ... to tell you ... to the next video ... close the closed'door please hahaha everybody see thats shirts hahah with lines ... well ... seeya! :D

  • excellent video! thanks for sharing!

  • ight i get it

  • Fuck where can you get the DX100 i can't find that board newhere? neone no leave a comment!

  • get one off of ebay

  • DJ Mpaaaaact Back to youuuuuuuuuu Bayyybayyy!

  • dynamic range is the wrong word to use to explain the range of notes.

  • 7:47 - 7:48 was cool!! haha great job

  • very informative! thanks

  • I use a Keyboard \ MIDI (occasionally) and my homemade talkbox that ran me under 5 Dollars! based on a video called the ghetto talkbox :D being 14, anything is ok to me. i'm not using it professionally so i really don't care :P

  • hey mayhem, i just watched your digital love cover, great job, do you take requests? if so, i'd like to hear harder better faster stronger

    -thundersway

  • True, true...

  • how do i play "heart breaker"? i have a talk box and a keyboard.

  • I bet you can do a real good Jeff Goldblum impression.

  • Oops I meant the first part is for the comment right below me and the lower part is for two below me.

  • hey can somebody tell me what kind of talkbox to get for a casio(midi) keyboard?

  • To the comment above me anything would work but I'd reccomend the Banshee. Real easy to use and the tube is just the right size. It's about $120 I thinkg.

And to the comment below me, you take an imput cord that you would use to plug your keyboard into an amp. But instead of plugging it into an amp, plug it into the hole designated in your talkbox.

    Hope this helped.

  • How do you hook up a talkbox into a piano

  • Hey man. I've been watching your videos for some time, you really inspired me into getting into using talkboxes, i mean Roger did too, since my dad has many cassete tapes of Zapp and Roger. I'm a 15 year old electro house producer, and i think talkboxes would add a great effect.

Thanks for this video, it really cleared up some things about the talkbox i never knew, like how to get certain words, or how to even talk period. I thought that you actually like said the words :P.

  • Do you think the Rocktron would be better for a guitarist than a Dunlop Heil? I'm really not sure which one to go for.

  • the dunlop heil will produce the sound of l those rockstars out there who use talk boxes like richie sambor. that is the on he ues. but i personally would go for the bnshee. it might not sound exactly like all the big stars, but it is a lot better over all becuae it has its own preamp and it cn go straight to your amp then just hook a mic to a pa but the heil is kind of complicated. but for a guitrists point of veiw i would say bnshee.

  • How sound is interpreted by the brain is a subject of physics. Trust me I studied the physics of sound for 2 years.

  • haha.. why I never comment on youtube because every body uses insults because they are uneducated.

  • You have a degree and you call people dumbdumb's and ask if they major in things like dick smoking.

    That's awful odd.

Are you sure your not just a 12 year old looking stupid but trying to look cool and big.

  • no lol, and its in animation, thanks for asking

  • 1. Go "google" the string "biological psychology"

    2. The nature of fluctuation in acoustic pressure is physical. How the ear and brain interpret these pressure changes as sound is a subject of (biological) psychology.

  • so when we play the talkbox we should announciate our words, exhale while "singing", and emphasize each slylable right?

  • My LP, and Heil thank you!

  • Yo, whats your setup consist of? like speakers and software mostly? those look like some mean speakers dude!

  • Wow... this is JUST what I was looking for. Thanks a million for posting this!

  • r u suppose to whisper in the tube or what cuz i can talk into it but people can barely understand me!

  • your suppose to like lip talk not making any noise the air from the tubr doe sthe rust ;)

  • dude. how does the tube look like in your mouth? i tried doing the things you did also but somehow its still not working. i position the tube on the left side of my cheek as well. is it diagonal to the center of your mouth from the left? or is it still kinda lined up in your cheek? please reply! thanks!

  • tnks!....gracias!

  • You'ze a genius, mang!

  • Thanks for breaking down the 411 on the talk box. My question is how do you elimante the piano or keyboard sound and totally use your own voice. Keep me posted

    D.J. H.E.

  • I know... you could talk!

    ;P

  • Thats cool bro. Always been intrigued by the talkbox so I ordered a Banshee and it arrived yesterday. Was having problems trying to pronounce certain letters but your vid helped. Cheers bro :)

  • haha, biological psychologist. hahahahaha

  • Cool!

  • haha pause it at 7:50. Facial expression is hilarious!

  • continu mon grand t'es sur la bonne voie, apriori tu maîtrise, tu devrais jouer plus que tu ne parle.

  • where duz the tube go??

  • In Your ass

  • ahahha

  • Thats awesome!

  • wer does the tube goes???

  • HEy man can you teach me how to setup my keyboard to make a talkbox soun . i dont got the dx100 i got the dx27

  • I read a review on the DX27 which says that it is the full size version of the DX100. Haven't confirmed yet, but just bought a DX27 on ebay. The DX100 is going for outrageous amounts of money right now. Nobody's caught on to the DX27 yet, so prices are lower than the DX100. Mayhem- on your next video, could you show us what other DX100 patches or other synths sound good are other observations you've noticed during the course of finding our voice?

  • Gaaah close that closet door!! lol... You off the hook mang....

  • Sup mayhem, just like to thank you for your tutorials man, they really did helped me develope a better sound... I posted a track with the talkbox on it called "It's alright" on soundclick just type in undadogg077 and thats me

check it out and pls let me know what i can do to improve it..

    Peace from the undaground!

  • LMBAO !

  • yes, please explain how to hook the tube up to the dx100,dammit

  • could you somewhere explain how you hook the talkbox to the keyboard? How do you put the output of the talkbox into the keyboard?

  • how much did your talk box cost

  • those harsh sounds. I think they're called fricatives. Anyway, great video

  • awesome. you have done a great service for the memory of ROGER and his talkbox legacy.

  • Excellent video there mayhem :)
