I have a front brake, yep, put it on after riding skidster for 2 weeks and discovering that I could ride ALOT faster with a front brake. Having to slow down 100 mtrs before every drive way, footpath entrance, road etc etc etc got very boring very quickly. I like to ride my bike fast and enjoy the ride, not either have to start resisting every 20 secs or worrying because I cant stop quick.
You want to look 5% cooler = ride brakeless.
You want to have more fun and ride fast = have a front brake.
@cjd022 I would say.. lean the fuck back. use your legs to brake but anticipate your movement, (if you lock your knees you pedals will push your body up causing you to move weight forward aka over the handlebars)
@dudeontherun83 any ratio is fine for tricking. I run 28x13 right now, currently waiting on a 12t cog. Many people I know run 33x13 or 30x13 or 36x13. I used to run 42x18, 33x13 and they're good for tricking.
@dudeontherun83 yeh you'd probably want something at least less then 48 18 u can work your way down into the 30's and be fine remember the higher on the front the more torque, the higher on the back the less torque its counter intuitive
Having a brake like that on your bike isn't stupidity, it doesn't interfere with the 'feeling' and is recommended when your just learning to ride on a fixed gear.
also, riding without at least one working brake is illegal in the netherlands. even if you don't use it it's gonna save you a fine when they do get you. :)
If you live in the US, try to learn with your left foot forward. That way you can use the slant of the road to help your roll backwards (if you don't have a fixed bike).
the whole brake no brake thing... who cares? I ride without brakes but i rarely skid. i know people who ride bmx and go through tires faster than me. i've been on the same tires for a cool 6 months now and they're still not even close to bald :|
Does anyone else find it easier to do this seated? I couldn't learn to do it standing as is suggested so I just learned to do it while seated. Now I can't trackstand at all while standing up. Nothing more than a quick stall at least.
that makes sense: you have five contact points with the bike instead of four (just like riding no-handed is easier when sitting or pinching the seat).
i think the progression he's trying to show is towards a literal standstill, so when he stands he means for you to focus on rocking back and forth, and then when he sits he begins keeping the bike very still.

Doing a trackstand on a fixie is like have diarrhea, it comes easily. A fixed bike is much, much easier to trackstand on for extended periods of time. Obviously I find trackstands on fixies to be entirely unimpressive.

Hey, uh, mean spirited new guy. The wheel and the gear are fixed together. Together. A fixed wheel is the correct term. If you insist on being pedantic, read your Sheldon Brown and learn first.
I'm not new. I've read Sheldon Brown. Sheldon himself doesn't refer to it as Fixed Wheel ever. It is always Fixed Gear. Go actually read his articles, then come back. I've double-checked this via Google's site-specific search. Any reference to "Fixed Wheel" comes from other people who don't know any better.
@god777kid Its not all about if you can go brakeless or not , its if you want to really keep buying new tires and tubes for your wheels and spend countless 20 dollars on tires and 3.50 on tubes. If your a hipster or someone who likes to ride fixies w/o brakes you are constantly either braking which is like skidding. All your doing is burning out your tires. Sure it looks cool without brakes, but no ones gonna notice a black cord.
@jakesever By a month if you dont know the basic brakeless brake in how to do a 30 degrees skid leg pull up , i'd say you are quite the mentally challenged punk. I still have my brakes on, only because i use my brains because i have better things to spend my 20 on some stupid tires i couldve easily avoided.
hey thanks but i tdont think ill need to hold on to something, when i got on my bike and stop slowly, when i completely stop. i began on rockin my pedal back and fort =] and i can stay on it for 5 sec or so =]
hope ill get better and im tryin to build a new bike! thinkin of gettin a leader frame, but i dont know if i should go get it with the fork combo =\
You don't /need/ a fixed gear. You can track stand with a freewheel bicycle, compensating forward with the pedals and backward with an incline or placing your foot on the rear of the front tire and applying pressure.
I've had greater success teaching people how to trackstand on a freewheel with a slight incline. They then take those skills over to their fixed gear. Of course, most of the people I've helped are transitioning from a lifetime of riding freewheel, and so have trouble with the concept of pedaling backwards as a way to correct the bike. You can trackstand with a very tiny incline using a freewheel. Fixed gear has greater versatility.
What kind of frame is that?

dudeontherun83 1 year ago
@dudeontherun83 high ratio = trick.
but you can do tricks with anything. just harder sometime. a good ratio is 46 and 19
i run a 52 16 can do some tricks just really hard.
