@kingward100 She's certainly had her sad times. Hopefully she's happy. Her son, Terry, said she's great at moving on. She always seems to live in the now, leaving the bad times behind her. She has a new website - dorisday(dot)com - with recorded messages. She sounds really great ! Fun to hear.
@dogkelp So very true ! She's quite a lady ... and yes... lovely music. And Terry certainly made his mark in the music world too. I love this song .... happy you enjoyed it too !!
So very true !! She's quite a lady ... and certainly has given us wonderful music. Her son Terry made his mark on the music industry. I love this song .. so happy you enjoyed too !
My thanks to Dayniac4324 for his kind comments. I've been searching for an old ballad (and I can't remember who recorded it) that partially has these lyrics: "It's just a little street/ where old friends meet/ and treat you in the same old way...." It's a slightly sad song--- the hope of going back someplace where people will be kind after you've had a failure in life. Has anyone hear of it? For some reason I think it might have been Nat King Cole or perhaps Tony Bennett.
I don't know how I ever managed to miss this song. Recordings such as these are like the work of a poet--- here you get a situation, a context, a story, and out of a speaker or headphones comes a voice, the voice of a great artist but now playing a role and just as reading a poem provides a wondrous experience, the recording infuses one with all the emotions implicit in the song. Poems/recordings=art. An equivalency as far as I'm concerned. How far we've gone from that level.
@284Maldiner Great description of this one .... she really tells the story. This is one of my favorites songs from Doris. One not very well known. I really think she was one of the best at interpreting a song and intimately laying it out there for us. Really happy you enjoyed this one !!
@montserrat533 good morning dear...thank you ...I always enjoyed anything about our Doris...I live in England but I am from Barcelona..and I am saving to be able to go to Carmel next year...Bye always have a good Day...MM
@montserrat533 Oh ... that would be sooo much fun ! I really hope you get to go. Is it for her birthday celebration ? I didn't know if they were still doing that, since the radio station changed. Hope you have a greart Day too... hugs... Toni
Thanks for this little known song. I think it came from a Broadway musical called Subways Are For Sleeping. Doris sings it with such style! Isn't she the loving end?
Thanks for this little known song. I think it came from a Broadway musical called Subways Are For Sleeping. Doris sings it with such style! Isn't she the loving end?
@Voyeurreveur Thank you for that info - I didn't know it was from that show. I really love Doris' interpretation. One of my favorites, in fact. So happy you enjoyed too !!
I've never heard this one before--don't know how I missed it! It's beautiful!!
Do you know when she recorded it--and which album contains it? I must get a copy! :)
Lovely job, Toni--thanks so much for all your hard work, that makes it possible for "computer-illiterate" folks such as myself to enjoy Doris on YouTube!! I hope some young people stumble across her on YouTube, and discover what they've been missing!!
@dday431924 It was recorded on Nov. 21, 1961. I don't know if it was a single or on an album. I haven't found that info. Isn't it bliss ? I absolutely love this song ! I have it on one of the Bear Family sets. I can send it to you .. private message me your email and I'd be happy to send it to you. I think a lot of young people love Doris - I have quite a few young friends here ! She'll live on forever -- I think !
@Westcoastjazzer That she is ! To me - this illustrates her strength as a performer.
This is a pure - simple - perfect interpretation of the song. No frills -- just lay it out there - sing the song. No one could do that better than Doris.
@Dayniac4324 The multiple CD boxset MOVE OVER DARLING contains 197 tracks recorded between 1960-1967 in chronological order. This places this song as one recorded in 1961 since some others like LOVER COME BACK are listed after it.
@ENACODNOM I have been trying to go back and list all the recording info .. haven't had a chance to get to all of them .. but I do apprecitate you pointing out my short comings.
@Dayniac4324 Don't mention! On my way to bookmarking Doris' songs, I think it's useful to add some corrections that will be of some help not only to you, but to any other visitor who's interested. I bookmarked uptonow just over 400 songs by Doris and there are about 150 I didn't find. There is still some way to go, but I still maintain that Doris couldn't have recorded those 1000 songs that we talked about more than one month ago. The near future will finally reveal the truth!
@Dayniac4324 I finally finished bookmarking all the DD songs I could find: around 420. There are about 200 not available for the moment here, so I estimate the total of the songs that she recorded to something around 620. Unless I receive a message from you or any other Doris fan, I won't be visiting here for two or three years. I am and will be busy with many other singers. Keep on going with your fine work!
@ENACODNOM A friend has been working for some time on a list of songs Doris recorded. He is up to around 900 - and has this information on the Doris Day forum. I don't know where you get your information.
See you in a couple of years. You get to work on those other singers.
@Dayniac4324 There are a few sites covering the Doris Day discography. Among the better ones are: Wikipedia, Allmusic, Discogs, and the fanmade DorisDayTribute. But the counting must be made with patience and care, the trick being to avoid counting the same recording more than once, except when DD really recorded it more than once. What I think is this friend you mention counted many songs several times by mistake. Maybe you should try counting them yourself when you have free extra-time. See ya
@Dayniac4324 Now we're getting closer because if Doris (or any other singer) sings live on TV or anywhere else songs from her repertoire, then I will not count them, unless a duo with another colleague. I have the list of her songs on radio programs in the 40s, and I DID count the duos and songs not on record. Her songs not released "commercially" have been released by now on multiple CD compilations and I counted them too! Anyway, you can try yourself the listings, patiently and bit by bit.
@Dayniac4324 By the way, did I ever thank for all those Doris Say songs you uploaded? I think I bookmarked almost all of them. Thus, even if I finished bookmarking DD, they're all the time ready for me to listen to, as long as they're still online. Visiting your site I noticed that you're an Agatha Christie fan just like me. I read all her books and I saw almost all the mvies based on her books, including those monderful whodunits made by Btiyish Television (Poirot, Marple, etc.)
What a lovely, romantic song, made all the more so by Doris's flawless phrasing and intonation. The emotion, the feeling of loss, the wondering what if, it's all there in her voice ..... that is phenomenal! To be able to impart so much genuine feeling with just a breath, a note, amazing talent! Thank you sooooo much for sharing this beautiful song by our beautiful lady Day.
I'm so sorry I didn't see your comment until just now. I came to listen to one of my favorite songs from Doris. And - you've described this song beautifully ! That is what I love about Doris - her ability to interpret a song with such feeling ... but she does it so simply it amazes me. She really is the best of all at interpreting a ballad. Truely is the best. I'm really happy you enjoyed this song.... its one of my top ten. Thank you for your wonderful comment.
She tells the story simply and beautifully - her interpretation is perfect and intimate. I really love this song ! So happy you found a new favorite !! Hope you're having a great weekend ... thank you .... Toni
I agree Toni, it's a truly beautiful love song, of unfulfilled love to be sure, thus a yearning by the singer for its fulfilment, and it demonstrates also how underrated a recording artist Doris was. It's a great recording and I thank you for it -- it certainly hits the spot.
Difficult to put the finger on -- was it partially due to other greats who's careers overlapped hers? People like Ella, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and crooners like Bing and Frank, and then a hurricane called Elvis came along. But at least you're proving there's a treasure trove of great music Doris made, and it's a pleasure to catch up with. Thank you so much Toni !!
That could be the case... but ... she deserves much more recognition than she gets. I am on kind of mission to get her music out there. And songs that you don't know - like this one. It's so simply wonderful ! Thank you Manfread ... truely appreciate it !
Oh, my goodness, what a beautifully articulated song, rendered flawlessly by Doris Day!!! I have not heard this cut before, wish I knew from what album it was taken......Thank you so much for sharing.
Doris did not record this song for an album; it was only released as a single. It was written by Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Jule Styne for the Broadway musical, SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING. They also wrote the score for THE BELLS ARE RINGING which produced a hit (since become a "standard") for Doris in "The Party's Over."Jule Styne, BTW, wrote the music for Doris' hit, "It's Magic", and the rest of the songs in ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS.

Hi Toni, Can't explain why, but I always loved this song. Maybe because Doris 'tells' the story of the song so well. Thank you for sharing and I hope your Day and Davids were good.
I know Peter - I agree - this is such a great song - she tells the story so simply but beautifully. We had a great Day - hope you did too. Glad you enjoyed !
She is an icon - an angel. I just wish she could have attained more personal happiness in her latter years.
