  • Has anyone else noticed that in the end the cushion back of the bench is still off center?

  • "I'm not eating anymore of that, not worth the calories..." LOL, I like that devil character.

  • i wonder who does the dishes in the good eats studio

  • i love his "manly" kitchen aid lol

  • "We can do better, from SCRATCH."

  • Wait, I thought he didn't like using the liquid color food dye because it can throw off a recipe?

  • what is that tool at 11:02

  • @hwendyz86 A liquid measure :)

  • Damn, I was wondering why my chocolate cakes turned out as dry and solid as a brick. Now I know why. Definitely not worth the calories.

  • is that the devil from doctor parnassus?

  • lol. I love the look the devil gives the camera. :D

  • in the very beginning, is it just me or does he say "fake cake bake-off"

  • haha does anyone think the shadows his glasses cast on his face look like evil eyebrows?

  • Good to know Good Eats uses King Arthur flour - 10:06 that KA AP flour with a GE sticker over it.

  • Bang up job with the quality and uploading all in one part! :D

  • The devil's cake was a hit, though I would add a bit more sour cream for even more moistness.

The red velvet cake also came out rather well. It had a great texture, but was a bit too sweet for my liking, and I really like sweet things. Also, the food coloring I used wasn't very heat stable, so it came out more of a light chocolate color . I would cut back on some of the sugar in the red velvet and replace the food coloring with 1 cup of grated beets.

  • so is this not a Dr. Parnassus/Tom Waits ref?

  • @VTECheart I believe it is!

  • @bynkman

I thought it was just me since Tom Waits + Alton Brown is potentially mind-blowing

  • I just did the devil's cake recipe and it came out great. It's in my fridge right now. I tasted the trimmings I cut off the top to level it and it's tender, moist and chocolatey. I've filled it with raspberry jam and am topping it with fresh raspberries for a birthday party this weekend.

I'm baking the red velvet cake recipe for Canada Day and will report how it turned out after.

  • @SmilingWhileInsane just made the red velvet today, it was amazing. not too sweet, just perfect. the only thing is mine only needed 25 min to bake whereas alton says 30-35, so keep an eye on it. hope you enjoy it!

  • @SmilingWhileInsane not fair, you're making my mouth water.....

  • They definitely got the right guy to play the Devil in this.

  • That little girl was freaken creepy.

  • beets for the red color huh? I wonder how you can get the color from them

    (wanna avoid the food coloring)

  • @Jgaldragon I suppose you could use the juice. But keep this in mind. Beets are naturally high in sugar and unless you know to exchange (juice is a concentrated liquid, sugar isn't), it could throw off the cake if you don't take out some of the brown sugar. Baking has to be exactly to the recipe unlike other cooking methods. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

  • Van Houten..... here in Holland a household brand for cocoa powder, like forever. :-)

  • There's no Portal reference or Rolling Stones reference? Weird.

  • I really want to try the red velvet cake for Canada Day, but I'm a little disappointed that Alton relied on food coloring. I was hoping he would use grated beets.

  • @SmilingWhileInsane That's cause food coloring is the original and is flavorless. Red food coloring is made from bugs.

  • now hes dieting we dont see him eat what he makes any more

  • shouldn't this be an Art of Darkness episoide?

  • Does a marbled version of Angel and Devil food cake exist? I mean, I guess you could just make it yourself.

    I'd call it Purgatory cake.

  • Lol sorry I forgot there were a few things here.. I made the red velvet cake and it came out amazing!! I used the exact same measurements.. Ounces instead of cups just like Alton. I didnt make the frosting though,, just the cake itself.

  • @ryemanX22 You can't have red velvet cake with out the frosting!

  • I just made this!

  • @ryemanX22 Made what? The devil's food cake or the red velvet cake? And how did it turn out?

  • Replace red food coloring with tiger blood.

  • anyone else think of the Doctor Who episode "Blink"?

  • @khesed i thought of the torchwood episode "from out of the rain" when they were at the cake competition...

  • In the devil's food cake recipe, replace the hot water used to bloom the chocolate with hot coffee. It won't be detectable as coffee in the final product but coffee and chocolate have complimentary flavors so you will have a more intense chocolaty flavor.

You can also replace the other water with coffee too if you want.

  • Try that "1911" Button, it makes the video look all "Retro".

  • That Devil makes me think of "Dr. Clef" !

  • Alton's Daughter scared him!

  • @NY4Life I love the "Emphasis on Darned" bit!

Guess the network wouldn't let someone that age use the word "Damned". LOL

  • I really like the actor who plays Ol' Scratch. He's so perfect as a playful Satan.

  • I love Alton's red sweater!

  • Re 18:40, William Lawrence wasn't the guy who invented cream cheese. It's actually based on a French cheese called Saint Moret. Oh also, thanks for uploading!

  • @ourhealthcarestories I had heard that cream cheese was created because the guy was trying to make a cheese like St. Moret or Neufachetel, but in some way messed up. Interesting how food lore can be so messy.

  • 11:18 "If you add all the powdered sugar at once, you end up with white powder all over your kitchen" I think Charlie Sheen wouldn't mind that...

  • @muetter bi-win.

  • @muetter boy I bet you weren't considering how that comment would look 4 months later..

  • @muetter Except Charlie Sheen wouldn't be snorting powered sugar!

  • MAY LORD XENU BLESS YOU SIR!!!

  • Thanks for the upload, man. This is a great ep. I made Alton's devil food cake and it turned out great. Used a family recipe for the frosting rather than his, though; I don't like mayonnaise in my baked goods.

  • You Rock! thanks for the upload!

  • thanks for uploading this!

  • Looks like your uploads are getting quicker. =D

  • =O Alton's daughter

  • thank you!

  • Thanks for the video, once again you have made my day, thanks

  • thnx for the upload ;D
