  • love the sound of that les paul jr.

  • Much as I love and respect the mighty Mr Page he could only play 1 guitar at a time. For serious Guitar overdub heaven I would refer you to Eric Johnson on Venus Isle. Immaculate playing of a fluency and accuracy Jimmy can only dream of. Like the rest of us!

  • Saw them at Sheffield City Hall in the 70's fantastic

  • I didn't think music was a competition ;)

  • @stickwithahit Welcome to to 2012.

  • Laurie Wisefield is good.

  • The bass player is Trevor Boulder, better known for playing with Spiders from Mars and Uriah Heep. This was recorded in 1983 on the tour for the "Twin Barrels Burning" LP which has to be the heaviest Wishbone LP and also my favourite.

  • too fast:::

  • Great video. Laurie Wiesfield does not really get the WISHBONE , but he is a great musician.I prefered for my part , Ted Turner. But its anyway difficult to get into the step of such guys.So great job Laurie anyway. Steve upton...one of the most underrated Drummer,in my mind, a REAL good Drummer. Thanks for ARGUS u guys !!

We just need now more videos of W-A..that would be kool :-)

  • @Densquire I totally agree with all your comments. Laurie is great but how do you replace TT! I would love to see some live videos of the original WA if anyone has any to post. Your right about Argus too, I don't need to waffle on about that, those who know, know (and no I'm not being clever or elitist) Many years ago I saw WA at Sheffiel City Hall - They were supported by a band called 'Home' with Laurie Wisefield on guitar, what a treat that was! And let's not forget the great Martin Turner

  • @hobbyhippie So could Jimmy (whom I respect greatly) have done it live without tapes?

  • I love this song since years and years, not at least of its fabouluos twin guitar solos.

  • timeless indeed!!!

  • Heard this today on XM radio...had to revisit this song! Ahhh... the memories!

  • Page is one of the most (sorry I have to use this dreaded word, but sometimes it just applies) overrated guitarists ever. Besides being super sloppy, often out of tune and relying on studio gimmickry he's the biggest plagiarist and I ain't talking just the blues :P

  • @GalaxyRover1020 wow?????????????? hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • @crinan9 I thought that too. TB is a bass rock god.

  • THis is a parody of the original track most disappointing

  • Lead guitar solo needs a wah!

  • Mann war ich da noch jung. Aber ich liebe die Musi immernoch!

  • I think the bass player is Trevor Boulder

  • Odavde utjecaj crpe Galija, a u nekim gitarističkim uvodima i solažama "Drugi način"!!!!!

  • Saw the original line-up twice in the early 70's. Still great - as other vids attest. One of the best rock bands ever! Tight, polished and professional all the way. The thing that amazes me is how little radio play these guys got - and get even today.

  • Still gives me chills.

  • Niedoceniany, jeden z wielu świetnych zespołów !!!!!!!!!

  • What year is this? I do not belive that is Martin Turner on the bass?

  • @EnemyOfEldar "The King Will Come" from Album Argus came out 1972.

Martin Turner - Bass guitar on all tracks.

  • @Psykelic68 No, I mean on this particular performance. From the bass player's hair, it does not look like Martin Turner.

  • @Psykelic68 No, I mean on this particular performance. From the bass player's hair, it does not look like Martin Turner. So it must be after 'Just Testing', some time in the 80's.

  • beautiful...

  • woooohaaaaaaa! *close eyes*

  • Laurie Wisefield'd run rings around Andy Powell any day, but then again so would Ted Turner. Still, great song, great musicianship and great music all over! :)

  • @mielliottisverige Still you gotta give it to Andy Powell! He did the create the seemingly never-ending and infinitely masterful solo to 'Sometime World', which I think is Wishbone Ash's best song (It is certainly my favourate). Though, like you say, I have a strange affinity for the sound created by Ted Turner and Laurie Wisefield. But nobody can replace Ted Turner in my eyes. The solo(s) to the tracks 'Pheonix' and 'Error of My Ways' (their second best, in my humble opinion) are too good!

  • @EnemyOfEldar Totally agree, Ted Turner has a certain way with that guitar, but the tone Wisefield gets from his guitar is awesome at points. Different sounds, different players, but both excellent.

I guess I'm just mega-pissed at Powell for the way he took Ash in the late 90s/00's :)

  • roflmfao... comparing artists.. orly? Do you do a line of coke and compare it to the last line you did? Do you have an orgasm and compare it to all your other orgasms? Damn! If it makes you high you don't need to compare it to anything. Is this sunset better than the others? Is that fresco better than the rest? Was that meal really the best you've ever had? Why do you care.. or can you not enjoy without a top ten list? meh

  • Like seeing an old friend - one you have nearly forgotten.

  • I like the thought Fatas, and there are many good, forgotten guitarists from the day. This is a great jam, and to listen to the old stuff new, is cool, so koodoos to ya. Just enjoy it for what it is.

  • why must led zeppelin appear in every other comment, cant we just listen to this without comparing it. Both are great bands both are completely different bands. Just because they were in the same decade doesn't make them similar. so please for the ones of us coming hear to listen to the music, don't fight over which band is better or whose more talented because as for better thats a matter of opinion and as for talent, idt anyone here on the youtube comment board is qualified to say who is bette

  • @fatas412

I totally agree about the stupidity of comparing music artists. But then the thing is many people need to justify their preferences by "proclaiming it the best/better than xy" (and Zep as one of the most succesful, influential but also controversial rock bands presents itself). You'll find that kind of behaviour on nearly every channel. Add some overzealous fans from the (any) other camp and there you go.

Well, it takes two to tango.

Best to ignore the comments and just listen/watch.

  • To say that Zep never had well crafted songs is at best ridiculous at worst mischievous. But to throw stupid insults at Wishbone Ash, such a great -and yes, underrated- band, is just immature, Rollinu42.

You know, I'm a damn big Zep fan, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate good music by other artists. And I don't have to rate music in order to justify my musical preferences (nor need I speak ill of sth I don't like). There is no best & greatest. Just music some people dig more than other.

  • EXTREMELY UNDERRATED...ALONG WTH BUDGIE!!

  • I was at this gig!..Roxy fan, but my long haired friend dragged me along...So overcrouded, people were getting crushed up front..(us),,,Had to climb onstage, with about 20 others, and got backstage...Band gave us all tix for the Ham Odeon gig, later that month!

    What a memory..

  • ROLLINU42. 42 TO REASON TO SAY YOU FUCKING STUPID

MUSIC IS WELL. MUSIC IS WISE.MUSIC LIKE NOTHING ALSO

THIS GUYS EXIST IN REAL PEOPLE FOREVER

YOU CAN DIE TODAY - LIKE NOTHING- YOU NEVER WAS HERE

SOLD OR NO SOLD RECORDS NO MATTER.

MAYBE YOUR OWN MOTHER NEVER REMEMBER YOU. NIECE SHIT

  • This band is pathetic. the singing is horrible, the guitar players are not even good, much less great, and the band as a whole are out of time with each other half the time. The type of people who think these types of glorified garage bands sound great are the people who's crappy garage bands didn't make it and they can't understand why. Even mentioning these losers in the same breath with Led Zeppelin proves how little of an ear those people have. Zeppelin sold millions and these guys suck. LMAO

  • @Rollinu42 You have absolute no idea where you're talkin' about and I'm not gonna argue with so called musiclovers like you......

  • @Rollinu42 You are seriously just one-track minded aren't you? No time for anything but your precious Zeppelin.

Ok how's this for a lesson, Jimi Page is NOT as good as people make him out to be, 99.9% of his live shows have mistakes at every corner, hits more bum notes than most amateur guitarists, Sure he is world class but makes so many mistakes, so don't start criticising other guitarists.

Zeppelin sold so many albums because of over commercialising.

Wishbone Ash is a lesson in true music.

  • @nigellinaballerina Oh my, now that is the other side of the coin. People lashing out at Zep's success, Page's alleged sloppiness, etc.

"Of course my preferred band/artist, altough lacking commercial success, is music at its most purest - opposed to that other stuff selling millions of sound carriers!"

Sorry, but such a view is as immature (and false) as the blind love confessed by Rollinu.

And Page might never been the most technically accomplisehd guitarist but his fame is damn well-earned!

  • @Tokeiihto13 I ever lashed out at their success. I am a huge Zep fan. I am just pointing out details that whilst probably one of the top live bands ever, there was a huge amount of sloppiness.

I agree with what you say about Page, and he is one of my favourite guitarists ever, but, I was just using that as an example. sorry if i came across wrong here, but that is not what I was doing.

  • @nigellinaballerina

Alright. :) It's just that many people on the net parrot some overheard criticism concerning Zep and especially Page without actually having the slightest notion.

Page was a magnificient, incendiary live guitar player untill '73 (then his downfall began due to injury, heavy drug abuse, megalomania). But what made him so great was his versatility (changing his style/sound for every song), his skills as songwriter, composer and arranger - unmatched among his heavy rock peers.

  • @Tokeiihto13 I agree 100%. His originality will not be matched for many years to come.

  • Comment removed

  • to bad they had to split, for all the followers of trully great rock bands, this guys left us a legacy, and yes , they still remain as one of the best duo players in history of rock. Underated ,maybe, low image, maybe, who cares, but who can match this guys

  • what year was this?

  • What can you say....Flying V says it all.....

  • the only thing i can say: this is fu... mind blowing. laurie is one of the most under rated guitar players on earth.

  • GREAT Band, but I loved better with the original line up.

  • This freakin' ROCKS.

  • i think he means page`s double-neck-guitar, no a second leadgit.

  • ローリー!

  • wow what a great band the fiirst concert i ever saw was wishbone ash and climax blues band together 13 years old blew my my mind what a graeat way to start my rock n roll obsession

  • Who out there knows how to play that opening riff,I am buggered if I can suss it

out and it is awsomePURITTY PLEASE

  • They are playing the Satsop River Rock Festival in Hoquiam, Washington July 31, 2010!!

  • @richjard and they were GREAT! during the guitar solos the other bands came out to watch and listen. awesome!

  • Excellent. Very underated band.

  • not only twin guitars but both playing tight as fuck leads. sad to think this band isnt even remembered ,them along with countless others. from a time that was so awesome how blessed we really were they stood for the music. pure and soulful guitar and amp. and a place to play

  • @1976 these are the 'good-new-day/zzz so let's see some choice quality musicians retrace where WE LEFT OFF -- what say you?

  • Man,that P 90 screams!!

  • like to have seen it with ted but laurie (who I loved in Home's The Alchemist) does a good job - so who Iam I to complain?

  • Best rock band ever existed on Earth!!!

  • może i fajne gitary, ale całość serce szczypacielnoje

  • amazing guitar duo, the gibson V sounds really good

  • Nice clip-some really great, melodic lead playing. These guys were a great tandem guitar team, eh?

  • Krishna!!!

  • I have it both on the vinyl-album and on CD and listen to it regullary, - and "The King will Come" is my favored.

It´s so good guitar riffs !

  • Brillant!

  • My god these guys were (are) great. Nice version. Thanks for the post!!!! Vocals are not helped by sound system. As old deadhead such things don't bother me much.

  • here i is ..mesmerized by ..all you ,cant shut me up..comments a blazing ,poor litle rich boy a bum w/a away to let out all my agnst

  • The most underrated rock band from 1974 through to 1980 as they built on early success. New England was an absolute blinder but got lost in punk era. Both Ted and Laurie were great in their own ways and should be enjoyed for their own styles. Best gig? Marquee, 29th Oct 1977.

  • Wonderfull. What vivid memory. Now I am 50 years old and I find this video here on youtube. I can smell the fragance of my youth.

  • im 59-how does it smell? ive seen these boys 6 times-id go tomorrow.they are soooooooo fucking good! thanks you tube!

  • I saw Andy and Ted performing on Night Of The Guitar. It was awesome

  • There was another version of this tune from the Rockpalast show and it's 10 times better than this one. It's off youtube now I think.

  • I don't know, I think Laurie sounds anemic compared to Ted.

  • Not Ted..it's Andy

  • I meant on the record. Did Ted not play lead on this song on the record? What I'm saying is I think Laurie's version of the lead guitar is lifeless compared to the original version, not the other guy in the video.

  • No you're right. Ted played on the record. Laurie didn't join the band until There's the Rub LP.

  • Go into a Music Gear store and play this on a Fender G-Dec amp where you can pick the beat to match it and build up all the guitar trax one after another....it's an awesome one man show trick and you can turn people on to Wishbone ash at the same time.

  • great band. but vocals always let them down

  • fair point in fairness. love ash too.

  • Laurie is such a good guitarist but why he chose to become just another session man is a mystery, the ASH will go down as his best work.

  • Love the youthful agression in Laurie's playing on this song. I'm a HUGE Ted Turner fan but Laurie definitely had a different thing going on. Who but the Ash would write that clock tower chime riff? Such a unique and enduring band. This song really kicks into overdrive on Laurie's solo.

  • Wisefield?.. man made that melody maker talk!....

  • I think that is a Les Paul jr. he is playing. The only reason I say that is because I have a 1960 model. It is a little thicker than the melody maker and sounds a bit hotter.

  • hmm...(today my guitar teacher showed it to me) now im trying to play the leads but it's freakin hard for someone who's playing a year and a week....

  • Wow...I was at this gig lol. Where did you get this footage?

  • planetside ?

  • ANOTHER Shaefer Beer Festival Concert in Central Park! WOOOFAAA!

  • remember those days at the wollman skating rink....thanks for reminding us how old we are getting!

  • They're playing it a little loosey goosey. Wish they'd get into it more.

  • this was over 30 years ago

  • The British Allman Brothers.

  • nice comparison-thank God Cher aint across the pond.

  • superb

  • I never heard of this band before, they sound awesome

  • Rewelacja!

  • This is such a clever song. It just showcases their talent really well. I saw them play it at the rainbow in 1975 I think. Laurie wisefield was impressive. But the image I remember most was Andy Powell soloing at the front of the stage with his flying V.

  • 2 brianstorm123

Led Zeppelin had only one leading guitar!!!

  • luvin it ...thanx for shareing

  • the only album i have of wishbone ash is their live album and still loving it

  • Nobody should ignore this band.

Infact, everybody should be taught about them.

These and led zeppeling...pioneers of twin lead guitar!

  • Led Zeppelin never had twin lead guitar. never, ever

  • @hobbyhippie nope. But Page had a 12 string killer guitar

  • @hobbyhippie Sorry, but practically every single Led Zeppelin song has at least 3 guitar tracks (if not more).

On Jimmy's harmonised Guitar solo to "Misty Mountain Hop" alone there are 5 distinct and separate parts!

Jimmy Page called it his "Guitar Army".

  • @hobbyhippie Led Zeppelin never had a lot of things Wishbone Ash had. Well crafted songs for instance.

  • @hobbyhippie so what...

  • @Shad0wBalrog i think what he means that 'twin guitar' adds an element that other rock bands of the era missed .. lynard skynard did the same and (if you listen to them) you WILL hear that it adds the same musical dimension (musical layers without synth'ing viz, 'Queen', 'Yes' both did) as this does .. that's all

  • @dogsofwar007 Free bird. Ofcourse. But it is not that big deal, trust me. I can harmonize all the licks i play, but it can be aplied to few songs (in my opinion). Some times it looks exagerated. Some times whats enough, is just a couple of chords, and a nice solo guitar on top. Peace, and thanks for the time you put in to comment.

  • retard

  • well maybe he means the double neck guitar ;)

  • no, he said twin lead guitar, like 2 guitarists.

  • perfect

  • Wow, Sitting here at 63.!!! Gulp and remembering note for note these great guys. Bought all albums on the release day, Saw 'em here and there and loved the intro's that John Peal, rip, used to do when he frequently had them on his shows. Halcyon days...but so are these.!!

  • Saw em live when I was 16.....:O I'mma 17 now:3

  • oldskool r´n´r is timeless, no matter how old you are... keep it rockin and smokin ;-)

  • Hell yeah I'm 18 and this song is the shit Wishbone Ash ftw they just need more recognition

  • I dig this song, Im still a teen, so I guess I am one of the young people too :D

  • im 16 and this one of the best bands iv ever heard, classic rock doesnt compare with anything you get today.

im gonna see them live on the 30th of april :D

  • Lucky. I'm 17 and I can't see em'.

  • I saw em last night...Ive seen both Wishbone Ash and Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash. Both very good, MT'sWA stay closer to the original songs if you prefer that. You'll have a good one though

  • Hehe was 16 when I saw em too...:O I'mma 17 now xD:3

  • Incredible guitar rock from a classic album, Argus. One of my favorites

  • viva wish bone , pero mejor es the errors of my way

  • thank you, young people who are watching this!

  • the industry's scales are falling off a generation's eyes. Look up Serpent Throne, for example

  • I always thought that the magic could never be the same since Steve an Martin are no longer in the band. But there is still a fire under the ash!

  • its named andy

  • amazing band...

  • I hear alot of people saying that they believe that Wishbone Ash featuring Laurie Wisefield is better than that of Wishbone Ash featuring the original Ted Turner, who is masterful. I cannot agree with these people as the original layout of the band was by was the best, and in my opinion, is one of the best bands in existance. Poeple use this performance to state that he is better than Turner, but not only is this redition unsoulful (lack of wah-wah) but it cannot be played better than Turners

  • Each is excellent in his own way - Laurie has a slightly more aggressive style and tone than did Ted, but both are fine craftsmen. Listen to how they nail that dual lead before the middle solo - and isn't Laurie wielding an LP Jr there? What a beautiful sound!

  • Trevy Bolder from Uriah heep at bass

  • Saw them live in the beginnig of the 70th here in Germany. And they are still have their fans. Cool.

  • superb!!!! I'm going to see them tonight. hope they rock like they used to

  • Im so pleased to hear that they are still playing,I thought they stopped playing long time ago!!its not to late to see this great top band!!

    fantastic!I hadn't listen to them for 25years!!

  • super song aber die soundqualität könnte besser sein

  • aaah, this is soo good

  • they used to open with this song. They are fantastic!!!!

  • La canzone che spinse Steve Harris a mollare le giovanili del west ham per dedicarsi completamente al basso a alla musica:Strepitosa!

  • i havent kept track of these guys, gonna see them live in february, is it all original members still playing? =)

  • no.... only one original member left now. I am going to see them as well in Febuary... in Spektrum / Augsburg / Bavaria. Second time for me...

  • Argus .....

    Timeless...

    Gandalf

  • One of the greatest in rock

  • Wicked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • and there is the rub.. and argus.. and majastic music

  • Soo Friikkkin! AWEsome!!! Oh Yeah!

  • This is the Mk 2 lineup, when Laurie Wisefield came in, after Ted Turner left the band in 1974. That is one funky looking guitar Laurie is playing. Ted always played a statocaster and Andy Powell usually plays a flying V.

  • I saw this band in 1972 for $2.50 at a local college, unbelievable talents & the guitar sound was unmistakable. I had never heard of the band before and after a guy prodded me to go I was amazed and still a fan today, they were so friggin' tight! I'll never forget it!!

  • To those he said they saw Wishbone Ash with Focus and Groundhogs would you note you did not see the current Wishbone Ash but Martin Turners Wishbone Ash . The current Wishbone Ash consist of Andy Powell,Muddy Manninen,Bob Skeat and Joe Crabtree.Martin Turner ( also an original Member like Andy Powell )got together to tour about 3 years ago to tour playing the music we all love .Not Knocking it as its great to have two bands playing the music but there is only one original band

  • this is to modern

  • I thought both were the current Wishbone Ash. Does Andy Powell have the right to the name or what?

  • Great song!!

  • been a fan for 37 years - sorry this is a shite version of a classic

  • Agreed....this is probably the definitive Wishbone classic anthem. I think Ted Turner had a virtuoso attack, where he neglected the simpler original riffs which are in fact more subtle and as such more distinctive...great track all the same....memories!

  • sparky-i wouldn't be that harsh, but i do agree there are better versions of the song...laurie was a fine member of the band...

andy has kept the band going, even though there have been many versions of the band-

the current line up is damn good as well and with the technology they sound great-...sound on this one isnt good...check out the reunion tour in 91- original band, great version of this song

  • make that the 1990 version

  • i just got back from seeing them live with focus and the groundhogs under 10 minutes ago. i used to think they were shit but oh my god i really love them now!

  • BOW DOWN! BEFORE One of the GREATEST ROCK GUITAR RIFFS EVER!!!!!!! BAYBEEE!

    Saw themshredd! :)

  • check out young laurie in a band called home in his pre wishbone ash days -))

  • never seen the band, and now, with a bottle of good red wine remembering the endless nights in the 80th when I was

spreading out on the highways totally fascinated by this music....

  • ive literally come bk from seeing them tonight from their real deal tour this was the opening track awesome band i reccomend seeing it

  • i saw these as well they played alongside focus and groundhogs at colne

  • they predated focus by years.

    who's groundhogs?

(sorry, I'm kinda as old as them)

  • haha i dont know much about groundhogs i have 1 of their records check some clips of them out on youtube Tony Mcphee the guitarists called

  • one of my favorite songs....one of the best band..good old times..
