Actually there are drawing made by the first explorers of cities, ordered streets, and there was an absence of crime.
There were large trading empires, of the Yoruba, the Kongo, the Luba/Lunda etc.
They would have expanded, people would have adopted reading of either local scripts like Vai or of Arabic (as was already the case in West Africa), etc.
I am beginning to feel an aversion to palm oil.
