hello my friend owns a 97 miata auto and he wanted to swap to a manual.would it be expensive and what parts would be needed.

The best way is to sell the automatic Miata as it is worth more to some buyers than a 5speed. Then buy a 5speed Miata.
You will need, trans, clutch, flyweel, pedals, clutch hydraulic system, and shifter assembly.
