Cumbia started in Colombia in the 1820s, originally as a dance of rebellion and identity of the slaves and indigenous people of Colombia. It is thought to truly have started as a mating dance between African male slavees and indigenous females. If you listen to Cumbia, it has a heavy African and indigenous influence. Cumbia originated in Colombia. But was brought by the slaves from Africa. The rythum is called "Cumbe" from and African Word. So though it might be from Colombia, the rythum and origin is African. And it was popularized by Central and South Americans. Not just P.R. and D.R. There are diffrent types Mexico has a cumbia rhythm but its very ranchero and mariachi style. So, its origins is not from Mexico. Nicaragua and Panama have tropical Cumbia as well. All this info is at Wikipedia.

The Dominican Republic is the crib of where Merengue comes from.
