  • syd was talented and smart. shame what happened to that lad

  • Comment removed

  • Wish there was better quality, because it really sounds like Syd doing a great job jamming out here, and we get to hear an electric version as well.

    Still grateful for this, though.

  • i wish he kept performing. this is one of the best live performances ive ever heard

  • @joshie4330 Without LSD, your favorite song would have never been created.

  • this is a better version

    watch?v=PQiNWIibEIc&fmt=18%EF%BB%BF

  • @ARJU1993

    That's the bloody studio version...

  • @2000StratusES oops lol

  • Why do people deny he was affected greatly not just by acid, but by anything he could get his hands on. I dig Syd, but I'm also convinced that drugs played a major role in his disintegration . Shine on Syd!

  • he traded his life so that we could experience his tripped out look on life. r.i.p syd'

  • bad ass pink floyd with david is the best

  • obviously none of you have evertripped or been dosed, I'm not as far gone as many, but I aint who I woulda been.....

  • I cant hear the drums this poorly mixed fadeing in and out but itz still a good song

  • I wish the rest of these songs had a mix where Syd's is, you know, not being subdued by his own wildly ill-mixed guitar (although the guitar playing itself shows some interesting techniques). And yeah, his voice sounded rough here and there, but quite honestly, he doesn't sound all that bad at all here, really. 90%, Syd sings as well here as he did in the studio version. What a shame that there are so few good Syd live performances.

  • @AndyWitmyer I think this tape must have been recorded close to the stage, just in front of Syd's amp...

  • Ï wanna go home

Take off this uniform and leave the show

Listen carefully to the last seconds, than you'll understand

  • A week and come back. If you think it won't change you, you're already to the point it wouldn't matter of you did it or not.

  • First off, props to Gilmour for even remotely sounded like he knew what he was doing following whatever it was Syd was playing. Secondly, it's a shame this concert doesnt have a quality bootleg. I'd love to hear even a decent recording. Lastly, hearing Syd play my favorite song this messed up reminds me why people shouldn't do drugs. Yes, he had his issues, but they were blown out of proportion when LSD came into the picture. Whoever keeps saying it's harmless, take a couple hits every day for

  • @joshie4330

Since when does taking LSD a handful of times in throughout one's life equate to dosing every day for an indefinite period of time? Too much Vitamin A can cause the skin to turn orange and eventually kill someone, does that mean I should go around badmouthing vitamin A??

Just like with alcohol or other legal substances, or ANYTHING, responsibility and moderation are necessary. Those who think they are an exception to this universal rule will learn the hard way. And so it goes.

  • @joshie4330 It is too bad, the show wasn't a disaster but it wasn't great. Due to poor mixing apparently the audience could only make out the second half of This song before he left stage. But I really like this, I mean hell I appreciate it all but this is fun.

  • Syd was, I believe, a genius, but the acid burned it out... Hapilly that he had to leave Floyd... he was too much out to write and perform...

Yeah, poison will kill us... so we better be away from it...

  • Syd was, I believe, a genius, but the acid burned it out...

Hapilly that he had to leave Floyd... he was too much out to write and perform...

  • this is Syd's only performance as a solo artist, i looked it up. You can hear some people acting surprised as Syd Barrett puts his guitar down, and unexpectedly walks off stage.

  • Poor Syd, flashes of the oldguitar brilliance in the middle but the hysterical shrieking vocal my god what a disaster

  • did he do drugs after quiting pink floyd?

    and for how long?

  • Hasta q se nota rallado el buen Syd

  • the wowing tape sure makes this even more psychedelic. lovely song, lovely syd barrett. peace and love.

  • thanks for posting. Yes it's very rough, but still an important piece of music history. Wonder what ever happened to the last black tele custom he was playing on Madcap and Barrett?

  • sounds like Syd changed the last lyric (@4.32) to 'merrily trip and hope I die'

  • For such an infamous gig, Syd sure seems to be rocking like crazy!

  • 4 a bad recording and a so called complete loon..Syd seems 2 b playing quite a WKD bit of guitar????Dave=Bass Jerry=Drums Syd=Mean Guitar/Lyrics...I would pay money 2 see this Gig..and even better if it was in Cambridge..I dont think we would be complaining abt the mixing..This is GREAT MUSIC RIP SYD

  • So I guess the cunt Jerry Shirley was wrong in his memory? He said it was during Gigolo aunt that Syd walked off. If you listen to that it does sound like the guitar drops out at the end of that but apparently it's supposed to happen here considering it was last. I'm confused

  • @jwild611 ..im confused????why is Jerry Shirley a cunt????please enlighten...kind regards

  • @tstoakley I agree jerry Shirley was awful

  • I don't know if he was "crazy" or not, but he has to be the main source of punk and "alt rock". And his "crazy" music blows away anything the Floyds ever did.

  • punk's not dead!

  • Jock is a jobbing actor in London; Sue is an old raver in Devon. I think their most important evidence is deny the spiking stories and to give the dope on Cromwell Road - a much more normal place than impressionable biographers have made out. tim willis

  • @MrMeddled

Rick Wright and others close at the time all regretted in hindsight leaving him at the hands of nutters who made him 10 times worse than he may have ended up, i form my opinions based on averages after consulting different sources, you cannot just denigrate everything "Crazy Diamond" had to say due to any slight mistakes it may have had,

Syd was more like a glorious anti-hero anyway

  • @wotdoesthisbuttondo we would have to have someone with balls and ask Emo,Sue Kinsford, and Lindsey corner what they tink happend with syd, and what the hell happended in 101,man i wish somebody could tell us what were they doing while spaced in that flat!

  • @jefduf

Bet they aint to quick to be forthcoming on that one if they are even alive these days, poor Syd never knew what he was getting into till was too late i guess

  • @MrMeddled

That's a bit too sweeping and general without any breakdown of any of my points which i garnered over time reading such books as "crazy diamond", saucerful of secrets", "miles, a visual documentary" (great book), and various music press over two decades to gauge enough info to reckon it's a fair summary and you quote just one book so i must still be right,

    sorry man dems the breaks!

  • Watch the new video about Pink Floyd:

    [Youtube] /watch?v=umPJZMs_2XE

  • ok....one thing I don't get....why DID barrett leave Floyd?

  • If only these could be cleaned up

  • I think the sound guy was more fucked up than Roger was

  • close our eyes and get lost in the wood. a part of history.poor syd.well done dave gilmour for sticking up for him.

  • it is just by luck that i listened to these in the correct order

  • Comment removed

  • The song really takes off at about 2:48 to me.

  • "are we sure this is gilmour on bass? this guy can't carry a tune to save his soul."

of course, syd's can't carry a tune to save his soul either, how can the bass go along with the guitar this way?

  • fucking bad equipment issues, they wouldnt sound that bad if there wasnt such bad interference. guitar sounds sick, i like the all electric maybe he has a wah hooked up

  • @animalmother4 hence why syd quietly put down down his guitar and left after playing this song

  • he plays bass like its the 1st time he picks it up

  • if this is gilmour on the bass, he fucking blows!!!!

  • are we sure this is gilmour on bass? this guy can't carry a tune to save his soul. syd is a bit inaudible. this is a great classic!

  • I can't believe this is actually here!1970 Barrett.Live! Unreal! Thank you for making this available.I'd love to talk to someone who actually went to one of the few gigs Syd did back then in his fragile state.

  • to the untrained ear this might be really terrible XD

  • I like to kiss trained ears.... does that count? Sometimes I whisper in them too. :x

  • reeeeeeeaaaly. *tents fingerz mr burns style* egggcelent.

  • lol ..... munching on them a bit too if thats ok. :D

  • where can i get these recordings?

  • really enjoy the solo, props to his supporting musicians. Like many I'm fascinated by him as an anomaly, I wonder what the 'real' story was....

  • You Baboon!

  • yeah lets get stoned. but i do love barett

  • I want to open my mind...

....close the door close the door HEEEELP!

  • its too bad he didn't hang in there and keep playing, it might have done him some good...

  • wow the sound guy did a horrible job

  • SYD>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • the recordings a little rough but there doesnt seem much wrong with Syds guitar playing abilities..I wonder how many bands of the time would have given there proverbial to have had such a massive talent on board??

  • first lets roll a joint...& let me think for a while take not much time to thank the ev

man sound revelation or was it relevation

no no im from amsterdam know what im doing.....uh lets roll yes wher was i oh yeah syd he is great isn't he?some kinda lost troubadour....you know dese guys from ages agoa singer-poet& hes rocking or what?

    no show-offs in THE MAN

    that's right folks........

    the others hah!!!!!!

    didn't even got a clue

wisdom lays under the rock of ages

  • Favorite comment!

  • mr. barrett

  • YOU HAVE NO WORD

  • wow this is fantastic

    thanks alot

    sam x

  • any info can be obtained in a book called A saucerful of secrets , the pink floyd odyssey

  • barret kicks or kicked ass!!!

  • On the picture in the video it says David Gilmour - Bass (on the bottom line).

    Is that right?

  • Yeah, Gilmour played bass in the concert, and in a few tracks on "Barrett."

  • he was spiked loads of times but seen as a guy who could take it (and prob could've handled what he was doing to himself otherwise) but musta fell in with some right dodgy nutters who cared nothing for themselves and therefore not him either and it was suddenly too late and irreversible and a real sad lesson learned regarding going too far by the first generation of trippers who had no one to take heed from back then

  • You are exactly right. According to all accounts he got "burned out" at the 101 Cromwell Road circus of a flat.

There were weird messianic acidheads who would spike his coffee among other drinks. All that in addition to what he did on purpose just distorted his reality on a daily basis way more than he could handle.

It's a crying shame cuz those idiots had nothing to lose, they are prob acid casualties or dead now, but Syd had and did lose a whole lot :(

    LSD is harmless.... in MODERATION

  • was that the flat where he was discovered to be locked in some cupboard by his giggling "mates"? top but fragile talents are often attacked by jealous nobodies seeking to point score in the only way they can but he should'nt have let his guard down so naively and was a walking lesson for the stars of the future for the rest of his life, it's just a shame his generation was the first to learn the pitfalls of drugs and fame. RIP

  • @bobshenix LSD is harmless?? yeah and so is heroin cocaine and tobacco in moderation u forgot to prescribe the moderate amount while writing this amazing comment

  • @wilitoto

Actually, LSD is 100% non-toxic and has never been demonstrated to do any damage to body/nerve tissues... in fact the LD50 (the lethal dose for 50% of the population) for LSD is ASTRONOMICALLY higher than almost any other substance... including over-the-counter medications like Tylenol. A potential lethal dose requires many THOUSANDS of normal doses!!!

Plus LSD is not addictive or abusable anyhow... The overwhelming majority of users do not use any more than once or twice a month.

  • @bobshenix you are an idiot. I first took LSD when I was 13 yrs old in 1967. You are clueless and your opinion is dangerous.

  • @bobshenix You know nothing on LSD

  • @lheavy1970

Taking LSD several times a year is more harmless to body organs/tissues than many OTC medications. Much like why marijuana is nearly impossible to overdose on (the limited number of receptors in crucial regulatory areas of the body)... active LSD doses are so low and its target receptors so specialized and specific that the molecule has ZERO physical effects beyond a mild body temperature rise during the trip.

Complete elimination from the body is also much faster than most meds.

  • @wilitoto bob maybe the man talks from his experience , i know some drugs that are claimed to be dangerous and deadly and addictive are not . but coke and herion are not good for nothing. i ve never tried lsd but i feel like its not as bad as all that and if i did try it i would use a small amount

  • @rlf1967

I am speaking from experience. I've taken LSD around 10-12 times in my life and have a solid pharmacology background. I do not regret it at all... it gave me some of the most magical experiences of my life, as well as some profound moments of insight.

I've never met a single person who was ever addicted to LSD in any way. I myself always had long intervals between trips and never drove under the influence. I might never take it again, but I probably will some time... who knows??

  • @bobshenix LSD is harmless.... in MODERATION?

Poison is poison forever! No way out!

  • @bobshenix The people @ Cromwell Road tortured him

  • @bobshenix If you read Rob Chapman's book "Syd Barrett A Very Irregular Head" you'll learn that there were no "weird messianic acidheads who would spike his coffee among other drinks", like a lot of other things, this was just a myth. Syd was not primarly an acid casualty, he was a casualty of fame, pressure, and stress.

  • @bobshenix mandrax and lsd learn about syd please

  • @bobshenix HOWEVER.... Pink Floyd would never have produced the songs they did had they not lost Syd. We know how great the Floyd was - without Barrett. Would they have done the same amount of epic songs with him?

  • @bobshenix

it was mandrax that got him. not acid. look at acid stats from the UK from that time. its presence was almost nonexistant

  • @TheReverendJohnson

Acid might have been "nonexistent" when considering the UK as a whole... but to say it was nonexistent in London during the mid-late swinging 60's is ridiculous. You don't think there was a ton of acid around at clubs like the UFO or at concerts in general??

I agree the mandrax probably played a huge role, but i don't think it became a big factor until Syd was already in freak-out status from all the acid. His music on Piper speaks for itself.

  • @bobshenix

    here we go again

syd barett was the first and only one who translated lsd to music.

  • @bobshenix Hi I've been dosed and had people playing games with my head, nowhere near the level of the things I've read though. Funny how the dregs seem to end up with all the best psychedelics. I can tell you from first hand experience that 90% of the quality of a trip has to do with the people around you, luckily I recognized the presence of God for what it was and used that with a bit of logic to basically explode the whole coup of fucked up junkies, ha ha and they thought *I* was mindfucked.

  • @wotdoesthisbuttondo syd took mandrax. lots and lots of mandrax. mandrex and lsd well fucking make you lose your grip on every thing.

  • @damphear2 Yeah, you're right, yet people never seem to mention it. From what I read, Mandrax was doing Syd pretty bad as well, like during his solo sessions, it'd make him slump off his chair.

  • i don't think it all had to do with acid but maybe sum he was using some very powerful acid i am sure .he had mental illness before drugs though , very sad indeed, someone needs to make a movie about syd and pre dsotm floyd wich i like much better

  • is the last recorded concert he ever had?

  • He formed a band called Stars in 1972 and they played some shows, not sure if those were recorded, anyways I believe their last show was his last.

  • lmfao. how can you even compare the two. you're tripping. greenday is really cool and a great band but syd is an enigma.

  • Inflammatory!

  • schizophrenia and LSD are both tied to a chemical made in the mind called dopamine. Schizophrenia wouldn't be a shock.

  • this is rock n roll

phony punks like green day just dont get it

its supposed to be terrible and real

  • dude i think you're missing the point

  • great band ... nice document

  • Clover honey pots and mystic shining feed?.Incredible

  • Everyone acts like they owned syd or something and lost him. It seems so selfish, he just didn't want to be a pop star, why can't people accept that? they say all this stuff about acid, maybe it helped him realize that's not what he wanted from his life.

  • Yeah most people think the acid made him go crazy and thats why he stopped making music. If you spend 5 minutes researching syd barrett you can find out He just realized he didnt want to be famous so he withdrew from that lifestyle. Being famous and tripping would suck.

  • And you are the expert,.... because?

  • he is right thats why!

  • awesome recording? are YOU on acid? lol-- its terrible..period

  • it almost sounds like he puts down the guitar at 5:14

  • Syd wailing on guitar baby!, Gilmours playing BASS. This guy wasn't nuts, just got sick of the business.

  • its not that simple, nothing ever is.

  • so very true... .

  • proof?

  • Why did this get downrated so much? He did, acid is what's known as a precipitating factor of insanity. If you're on the verge of what society considers sanity and take too much of a drug that affects your mind this heavily, you lose it.

  • I'm pretty sure he showed symptoms of disorganized schizophrenia (withdrawal from social situations, fragmented speech, lack of emotion in voice), which worked alongside him getting sick of the business to make him just drop out of society in general. But you're right, he wasn't "nuts" (that is, psychotic) at all. I think he just lost the ability to relate to people and went home.

  • I think you hit the nail right on the head. Also you have to factor in the use of LSD which can be a catalyst or indeed trigger an underlying mental illness such as schizophrenia. I think that definitely had something to do with it. And also a lot of the so called "bizarre" behavior Barrett demonstrated can easily be explained if he was indeed tripping at the time. I mean, playing one chord throughout an entire concert isn't really that crazy at all if you're high on acid.

  • And there's that fine line between genius and insanity. If you're a scientist, you are excpected to stay on the sane side. Einstein, Newton, Galileo, etc.

But if you're an artist, making occasional trips to the other side might actually enhance your street cred. And it certainly could boost your inspiration and creativity! Look at Jim Morrison, Vincent Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, Hunter S. Thompson, Robert Lewis Steveson, HP Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, David Lynch, etc.

    Peace,

    \A/

  • great post, this must be the famous show where Syd played with Jerry Shirley and Dave Gimour. After 4 songs he apparently unplugged and walked off. Excellent quality of post Floyd live Syd? and this was supposedly after he went insane on Lsd huh? well, he could still sing and play guitar here in 1970. nice vocal too.

  • syds songs are really amazing..arnold layne.. see emily plays.. all the piper brilliant!!.. his solo albums ...even in his...well madness.. or astronomy trip..forever syD!! absolutly master!!

  • He sounds amazing! I've never heard him live post Floyd either. This is an awesome recording. Any more of this?

I have a feeling a lot of the stories about Syd/Roger are mythmaking. He sounds totally present in this recording.

  • A couple people I grew up with fry'd themselfs on acid and never really came back.

    There dead now......

  • I thought he walked off during the 4th track and this appears to be the 4th track.

  • syd is a leagend that will never come agian it's sad that we lost such talent and skill

  • Evman88: this is great!!! Thanks from Argentina. I never heard Syd singing live after Pink Floyd. I believed that didn't exist this record.

  • Heres what drugs do to you kids...Barrett was brilliant...imagine what he could have become if he stayed away from that BS....that shit destroyed him!!!

  • But then, a lot of his originality came from drugs too. A give and take relationship. And it's not like he OD'd, he just quit music because he didn't like it anymore.

  • -pokedatwithastick

you know shit....i hope you get hit by a train

  • I'll get us a locomotive to run pokedatwithastick down.

    He EATS shit too.

    LSD was not the problem

  • TOTAL BULLSHIT.

YOU KNOW NOTHING about LSD or Syd Barrett.

  • its funny that syd took off right after the vocal came back...so you think that had something to do with it? seemed like he was fine and then he went kindof off after the vocals became clearer in the mix. couldve heard his voice and he was like...nah..screw this.. I think when syd stopped he really meant it and alot of people wanted him to come back, but he just moved on from music, had no interest in it anymore, and ppl were always trying to bring him back to that

  • Yeah this is the gig where he walked off and left Jerry Shirley and Dave Gilmour onstage alone.

  • yeah heard about that. but think it might be a different show. TJerry Shirley said that while they were performing Gigolo Aunt, Syd just left the stage leaving Jerry and Dave to awkwardly stop playing and leave the stage.

  • Syd is the god of pshchedelic

  • Listen to the last 15 seconds ...Dave Gilmour is tuning his bass, ready for the next song, the audience is clapping and waiting for the next song...Syd plugged out his guitar and walked off the stage...

    Shine on Syd

"please hold onto the steel rail"

  • You can even make out the audience gasping in suprise around 5:12.

  • Wish you Were Here.

  • Shine On you Crazy Diamond

  • ive got to add this to my favourites. i know syd wasnt in good shape then but i just love the bloke.he didnt do anything for nearly 40 years but hes still sorely missed

  • Nice recording of this version ! 5 Stars

  • diamondbackseye - Like your comment - I have though that for years... Syd's fuck you approach is the father of the punk attitude... Later the 'grunge' (what a stupid fucking word) scene - same messy playing style... Turned his back on everything - the real fuck you 101 leason...

  • I totally agree.Barrett, Cobain, Marc Bolan (a huge Barrett fan), might have been messy as hell but no one plays these songs the way they did. They made a style from their so-called limitations. And boy, were they awesome.

  • (agree with patorser)

  • Yes he did.

  • tortured death throws of a brilliant artist. i hope his life was peaceful and happy.

  • chokes me poor fuckin brilliant syd never forget ya

  • Poor Syd.

He have on this concert troubles for playing and vocals.

Wish you we here dear Syd.

Silver from Poland(a greta fun of Pink Floyd)

  • I put forth the suggestion that Syd Barrett may well be the creator of grunge AND punk music... His chaotic sound suggests a very early form of both.

  • Perhaps he did, we may never know for sure.....

  • Grunge was a consecuence of punk,

But there were lots of genres that were born in the punk revolution, so i really couldn't tell..

  • Diamondbackseye. Not only that but many photos of him from 1970 seem to predate the whole goth thing as espoused by that bloke from the cure (scary eye liner, disconcertingly long black hair over the eyes, long coat)etc.

  • CultureJudge-That's another thing yes, I was at first thinking of the music only but you are absolutely right. Syd's style and songs are to me the earliest example of what we'd now call grunge and punk. Anyone who disagrees give Piper another listen, it's right there. And if that don't convince 'em listen to this song again.

  • love this!!!!!!!

  • fuckin hell never heard this before

  • Too bad Syd always had to deal with crappy equipment and technical difficulties. Wish the studio version had a guitar break.

  • "I wanna go home..take off this uniform and leave the show"

I think this is what Syd was thinking during this song...and so he did..

    Shine on Syd

"please hold onto the steel rail"

  • Yes but... The name of the RoIO?

  • Just search for dates 06-06-1970

  • Where did you find this bootleg?

  • Go to google and search for Echoes hub

  • Lymbo clearly you have a different opinion of Syd than other people here. yes PF went on to make great records and eventually they surpassed the heights that Syd had taken them to. but it took them more than 5 YEARS after Syd left to reach those heights again.

let's just accept that we have differing opinions and move on, please? otherwise I'll feel compelled to correct some of the many factual inaccuracies contained in your deliberately OTT comments.

  • damn, i cant believe theres no vid for his last concert :(

  • Come on! None of did it before 1965. At least not on record! Right?

  • Floyd started to record their shows in 66 actually. And yes they did, and they were already off the underground scene.

  • Yeah maybe you're right about that they started the recording of their shows, but they were definately NOT off the underground scene. Noway! But there were several of the "jetset" musicians of London who catched the rumour that Syd Barretts pink floyd was doin something special and new, and there after some reviewer titled it acid rock. Syd was the man behind it despite there was four doin the tango. the debut album made the "jetsetters" disapointed of the result, especially pete townsend.

  • When i said off the underground scene i meant the other bands man. All those bands i mentioned had already released their first album when floyd started recording shows in the underscene, and all of those were already jammin since they were underground. And there are of course more. Ha ha ha ha did you really think barret "innovated" jammin in rock culture?.
