try using contractor bags or trash bags. You can roll down the sides to allow the light in and unroll them as you add soil. you can also just slice the bags open to harvest.
For those wondering why the soil level is so far down it's so that as the plants grow upward you can add more soil and there will be more potatoes form as the level rises thus getting more from the space.
I made a cylinder the size of a garbage can out of chicken wire lined it with straw then filled with soil. Sun gets in great. If you don't want soil leaking onto patio, etc., place the whole thing in a large black garbage bag and roll it down. Cheap and easy.
Go to the camping section of Wal Mart and buy a cheap emergency Mylar space blanket. These are highly reflective. Line the barrel with that and your results will be amazing. I use the Mylar blankets to boost my grow lights indoors. Works perfect! I am growing my potatoes indoors in buckets and Its working great.
Instead of using the foils, try using a car windscreen sun reflector. Its wide enough to reach the bucket height and long enough for you to make a circle around your plant.
It only works in cold weather and it is only needed for the first couple of weeks. Once it gets hot it will scorch the leaves pretty fast. They're doing great now, I'll make another video soon.
... or you could start them with the can tilted to face the sun? I love the idea of mirrors and reflectors all over the garden to brighten up those dark corners.

If you fill the tub with soil/compost, the plants will be at the top..........Lack of sunlight not an issue..............Not rocket science !

Straw is amazing...holds moisture really well.

Would it be okay to tilt the barrel towards the sun?

Yeah, go with Mylar. Tin foil is no good, it can burn plants with too much intensity.

I am surprised it didn't cook your potatoes. People do the same thing to make homemade solar cookers??

It was total failure due to moisture problems, but it worked well during the cold of early spring. I'm going to try again, for sure.
