Have you not been reading the comments on here? Stephane Grapelly did NOT play on this track. The violin soloist is Michel Warlop. This was his signature tune and that's why he was so heavily featured.
This was the masterpiece of Michel (Michou) Warlop. It shows what is possible when you have the best classical music education available, technique that makes nothing impossible, passion beyond belief and intensity like never before existed. Warlop won many prizes and was called one of the three or four best violinists of the 20th century. Django Reinhardt on guitar and Louis Vola on bass were also present on 21 December 1937 to record disc 13 in the catalog of Disques 'Swing'.
Warlop was famous for nervosity but I think the critics were wrong. I strongly believe that Michou was lifelong ADHD. I feel that's where all his energy, power, creativity and passion came from. This fits with what we know about ADHD now but was all unknown back then. Even his alcohol problem fits with ADHD. I'm no expert, but I've lived wih it for 6-plus decades. I identify with Warlop's music more than anyone else's. It's like he's been speaking to me over the past 30 years with his playing.
On the 23.01.11 I went to the pastry shop in Douai where he was raised and where he often played. That day was the centenary of his birth. The Warlop name stayed with the shop for nearly 60 years and 3 new owners but it all changed in 2002. When I told the present owner's wife the significance of the date, she was amazed. Even more so that I came from Belgium to be there that day.. She gave me the last item she had in the shop with the Warlop name, a cardboard box. I was very happy to get it.
@Disques13Swing Listen to LADY BE GOOD with Michel, Stéphane and Eddie South on violins. Michel's nervousness when he played in a studio was legendary and he can't hide it here as well. The sleeve note of the LP reads as follows: Michel n'est pas au mieux de sa forme et sa légendaire nervosité gâche un peu ses intentions. On peut cependant apprécier son puissant tempérament et sa volonté de "swinguer comme un fou".
Stephane Grappelly was to violin like Teddy Wilson was to piano. Both were great players and improvisors but both had something of a delicate touch. Grappelly could not have played with this much power in a hundred centuries.
Ok...then too much Michel Warlop and not enough Django.

Has anyone noticed that this tune is played over the changes to Stompin' at Decca?

Or the reverse? This was recorded 5 weeks before Stompin' at Decca.

You were only half right. This is built on the changes to Swinging With Django, which was recorded a little before this was.
