  • Ugh. I have preformed this tons of times for this forensics season. Is this poem supposed to be funny? I don't think it is a funny piece...

  • He is so wonderful!

  • This is one of my favourites of his :)

  • 9 people touched the red imp that hangs from the door as a knocker....

  • Like if Arthur sent you hear to see Neil gainman

  • I had classes with Professor Snape, he taught me about the dark arts, you went to Hogwarts? What year did u graduate from?

  • God I love his voice

  • one of my favorite poems, by one of my favorite authors.

  • at 3:15 his voice reminds me of Professor Snape :s

  • @hatsofftothezebra1 his voice always reminds my of Professor Snape.

  • I follow these instructions in my life. They work better than you think.

  • "Science fiction" writer?

  • Just realised that Sandman looks just like him!

  • Easy joke? You mean like... a Christianity one?

  • He is brilliant - to read, to watch, to listen to... And his "Instructions" is the best advice I've been given in ages....

  • i love the random crying baby lol its prob his scary face x

  • Did anyone read the article about the woman who claimed not to find Gaiman attractive? Suuuch a liar. :D Hi mistuh Neil, please read stories to me all day.

  • Awesome poem read by hot guy with accent :)

  • I like him

    he's cool

    I am sure he's a great dad

  • Feed me, I am dirty.

  • @Bradylama

    uh?

  • seeing this video's thumbnail I actually thought Neil looked a lot like sandman reading something :D

  • ays wearing a black shirt and usually accompanied by a leather jacket.

  • This is my favourite poem of all time.

  • i love "instructions." it's magical.

  • I remember reading this in A Wolf At The Door. Wonderful poem. Can't wait to read the new picture book that's coming out.

  • Those rules work rather well, really. Make sure you follow his instructions, and you might come out of it alive.

  • He reads beautifuly

  • Neil Gaiman is clearly a superhuman with knowledge of the other realms of reality and immortal beings. The Celestials gave the gift of complete knowledge of heaven and hell and fearie and the endless and so forth to Neil Gaiman so that he may write about it and warn us of the dangers out there and remind us that timothy will save us all... and that Shakespeare would've been nothing with out dream.

  • Neil Gaiman is inspirational, he has one of the most creative minds that our world has to offer. You don't know what you're talking about when you call him an idiot. All you're doing is trolling because you have nothing in your life better to do, do us all favour and go get one.

  • I kind of doubt that Gaiman is a scientologist, but even if he is, who the hell cares? This guy is a real person, you should realize. He's doing shit right now. Maybe hes writing, maybe hes sleeping, maybe hes just picking his nose because nobody is looking. What does it matter to you? Gaiman is one of the most creative minds of our time, and you're going to debate what he believes? If you want to know what he believes, read his fucking writing and stop being a tool.

  • yay! neil gaiman! ♥

  • I'm keeping a copy of this in my pocket, from now on, during my adventures. He knows what he's talking about ^__^

  • Do not trust the youngest.

    I resent that! :D

  • NEIL GAIMAN! Yay! :) Makes me happy inside! :)

  • @Kitkatheart ME TOO!!! :D LOL.

  • You can find this poem in Brian Froud's book; "World of Fairy". In end of the book, you will see an envelope, same texture as book. When you open it, you can find this with Brian Froud's lovely illustration. Lovely surprize from two nice man for their readers :)

  • Yeah dudes, sorry to ruin your argument.

But... I'm pretty sure he's Jewish. Check...

    Sandman Companion- Hy Bender

HB: While we're on the subject of gods and belief systems, I wonder if you could talk a little about your personal connection to religion. For example, what effect did religion have on you when you were young.

NG: I'd say the most important factor was my growing up as a Jewish kid in Church of England school.

So quit saying shiz when you don't know.

  • @SmitthyO Church of England = Anglican or Episcopalian in America, which is Christian. So Jewish by birth, going to a Christian school.

  • Oh god say Knocker again....

  • no matter what opposing "facts" presebted, i refuse to believe that a person capable of such lingual beauty and melodious story-telling is some evil douchebag.

    he is not.

he creates worlds colorful yet sinister filled with twisted ill-willers and naive bravers and i adore him for it.

  • he is not

+ this poem is magical, i love the idea of it

  • Is that their tagline?

    SCIENTOLOGY!

Like - elves is a load of bollocks...

"Trust Mr Gaiman, believe Mr Pratchett, put your faith in the wench with the axe -

'People, we really should face it -

"Fantasy weathers much better than facts!"

    h.

  • GAIMAN RULES!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very nice written.

  • omg omg omg omg

I wish I could be as epic as him xD

  • Golly,

Who woulda thunk ole NG could be so despised?

Suppose those who drag themselves up from mediocrity are destined to attract such pedestrian detractors.

Thank you Neil, Scientologist or not the Sandman comics brought me laughter and tears, and what more could the world want from a storyteller.

  • My favorite verse:

Remember: that giants sleep too soundly; that

    witches are often betrayed by their appetites;

    dragons have one soft spot, somewhere, always;

    hearts can be well-hidden,

and you betray them with your tongue.

  • Great writer... worth passing along to all who have a mind to think beyond the ordinary... Mike Gibbowr

  • neil gaiman is such a charming man. he's so charming I just had to comment twice. yargh look at his smile at 0:28. yargh.

  • neil gaiman always makes me feel so intellectually and creatively inadequate. and is there any other authors more charming than he is? ;-)

  • Comment removed

  • Who cares? His words are beautiful. What he believes spiritually really shouldn't matter all that much.

  • Whilst your comment is profound, it lacks any insight or research whatsoever. Not least that we use Sterling in the UK, not dollars...

Neil's father was, yes, a prominent Scientologist. Neil on the other hand has never mentioned it and there is little evidence to support your claim. It is believed that Gaiman was once SP (1983), but that was 26 years ago and not even quoted as fact - it's more likely to be his father.

Your brain is for using. Use it next time.

  • haters.....

  • Isn't Neil Gaiman that tall black-wearing guy that lives in a castle and sprinkles magic dust on you to inspire dreams

  • what is a scienelogost?

  • Hey brat, Scientology is a corrupt organization that is psychologically and physically abusive, as exemplified by their Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF) where Prison camps are run for "Sea Org" members in Los Angeles, Clearwater FL, Copenhagen and other sites. Scientology is a CULT of Greed that destroys family's through their "disconnection" policy and drives its enemies to ruin through its "Fair Game" policy. Neil Gaiman supports the CULT financially to the tune of six figures.

  • Scientology is a cult formed by L Ron Hubbard to win a bet with a fellow science fiction writer - one of them wrote a kickass novel, the other relied on people's gullibility - first to a million dollars won.

Kinda wish mankind had gone with the kickass novel, but there you go.

    h.

  • I wish the idiots part of the whole Anonymous cult would stop spewing their ignorant venom across the web for their "cause".

  • I have to say this,

I love this poem. Neil Gaiman is a great author. ^_^

  • Neil Gaiman has good ideas, but everything reads like a first draft. What he is great at is self promotion, doing readings, signings and appearances, always ready with a photograph or a blog entry, ad nauseum. He's a traveling salesman with a pen clutched in one hand. For Gaiman to rise above mediocre, he'd need to prioritize story and characters over salesmanship. Also, this blog is being trolled by studio hacks or Scientologists who jump on anyone who hasn't drunk the Gaiman Koolaid.

  • I wonder who else is trolling here.

  • Dangerous cult? You mean like.. Christianity?

  • Actually, it can be anything. Nazism, communism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, anything that is taken too literary is death.

So for the sake of the world, people need to learn to shut the fuck up!

  • @ThorleifT3

    Oh how droll. Ugh.

  • @ThorleifT3 dumbass

  • he's like the sweetest writer on earth. love him.

  • Amazing.

It's always good to hear poems and stories from the authors themselves. All audiobooks should really be from the authors...

  • lovely.

  • will neil gaiman agree to have sex with me???? will he?????????? what kind of girls does he find attractive i simply must know !!! :P

  • ... He's married. XD

  • yes, but he's also on show business so must probably he fornicates...

  • Hunny, lol, he's not coming for you XD He's an author. Unless you're his age and/or his friend/meet him, you have no chance. And yes, he is married.

    N.O.C.H.A.N.C.E.

    Not to be mean~

  • That was for wickedchicked :P

  • NOT married anymore. Ever noticed, though there's hours of you tube footage and video he never mentions three things? Being married, being divorced, and being a scientologist. It's not what people say-- it's what they DON'T say that is most revealing. Careful who you worship.

  • There's hours of youtube footage of many people who never mention being married, divorced, or a scientologist.

That doesn't mean every one of them are.

  • Tori Amos at one point I believe (he modeled Death his comic books character on her)

  • He actually didn't model it on her. He met her after he came up with the character of Death but was quite shocked when she turned out to be quite similar.

  • He likes girls who are into pain, degreation, humilation and Scientology. Bad sex, no caring.Tosses 'em away after he fully uses and degrades them. Is that really what you want? A lot of celebs put on a good front of being nice & kind to gain public appeal. Its their JOB! Then treat actual people in their life like shit. Neil is one of these. Not all do. I would love to write a tell-all when I retire. I know many women Neil & others have abused. Find a NICE guy in your daily life, you deserve it!

  • My last post was in response to Wickedchicked. I thought it would go to her personally only. Not used to posting on YouTube and didn't know it went for everyone to see (boss wouldn't be amused). Screw him.Still someday maybe a tell all book will come.

  • Brilliant poem. It has beautiful imagery.

  • God, I love Neil Gaiman. <33 What an awesome guy.

  • His daughter goes to my school :)

  • RAD!

  • I love he!

  • Idol!

    Inspires me so much!

  • still beautiful <3

  • i love his work!!! ahhhh!

    =D

  • I don;t see that it was supposed to be funny. I thought it was supposed to be, like, inspirational, or sentimental. One of those words.

  • Will you marry me Neil?

  • What the hell? This audience laughs in the stupidest places. I love the poem, but that quite ruins it.

  • My personal favorites of his are Good Omens, American Gods and Coraline. All incredibly well written.

  • Personally, I love the Sandman series. Mirrormask is also great, but my favorite of the books, I think, is American Gods.

  • I adore his books in general they all make me not want to put them down. (but american gods was def on the top)

  • I loved Neverwhere.

  • I find Neverwhere and American Gods to be his best, but Coraline sneaks hauntingly up behind.

  • i love everything i have read from him. good omens is really great

  • i find it weird and alittle creepy that people laugh after the line " colder too, and sharper and they cut" its not a funny line. and its really not funny if you think about it.

  • I think he's better in longer stories, where he has space to evolve the characters. For the first reading I didn't like Anansi Boys... then I reread it, and it was awesome. Knowing where the story leads, it was very interesting to find the twists and turns that lead there. Also finding a lot of small signs that tells a lot about the ending, and each time I said (at second reading) 'oh of course, it's clearly written here'.

  • My thoughts on two of Gaiman's projects, "Interworld" can't wait to see if there's a sequel, loved it!!!! Read it in two days!!! Beowulf, I give it a 4 out of 10. Written very hastily, as though they threw the whole story together in fifteen minutes. Could have been much better, maybe better without Angelina Jolie. The best thing about Beowulf, Crispin Glover!!!

  • I too disliked Anansi Boys and some of the stories in Fragile things. I'm now reading American Gods which is excellent. The sandman comics were or are friking great but i'm still so undecided about this author being an acclaimed one

  • Then how do you feel about his children's books? I've personally only read Coraline, but found it both well-written and horrifying. I'd definitely recommend not reading it at night.

  • It's a poem guys, a poem about childrens stories. You just gotta get the references, like in American Gods, then its a lot more interesting.

  • i 've read american gods and good omens and smoke and mirrors and the best is smoke and mirrors (I truly loved it) which is composed of several stories so if you don't like one you can enjoy the other. this video is boring.

  • Hey, I just got back from Oasis 20 science fiction convention in Orlando, Florida. You can check out my video.

  • Since when is Gaiman a SF author? He writes more fantasy than sf...

  • Well Stardust can be considered both Fantasy and Science Fiction. He's also done a science fiction comic (the writing part, that is), but I can't remember the name.

  • He isn't mediocre in the least.

  • Well he's certainly popular, I enjoy his writing for what it is, delightful and clever. It's not brilliant or anything, but it's his own art, and everyone ought to have the right to that.

  • apparently you didn't pay much attention to any of his work. his book american gods changed my very ideas on god and the gods.

  • And, indeed, the inherent nature of America itself...

  • I did not like Anansi Boys very much, but Stardust was excellent for the plot. Very excellent, in fact, much more so than the movie.

And did you ever read The Sandman? That is, like, the best frakking comic series in human history.

  • I did not read Stardust but I thought the movie was unwatchable. The only reason I did go watch it was because it was written by Gaiman. Such a disappointment. But yes, Sandman, beautiful beyond words.

  • Have you read American Gods, Good Omens, or any of the Sandman graphic novels (comics, maybe, I'm not sure of the classificatios)? Those are some of his best, after all.

  • OMG! I LOVE his Sandman GNs! Aren't they the Best?

  • "Graphic novel"? I think you mean "comic book."

  • No we mean "Graphic novel".

Comic books are printed weekly to monthly,

Were as Graphic Novels are compalations of a series of comic books printed as One big book when a story or series is finnished.

  • graphic novels represent motherchucker/

    yo yo yo

  • I feaking LOVED Good Omens!

I made everyone of my friends read it over the summer and then we laughed about it.

What did you think of The Anasi Boys?

  • Mediocre? Neil Gaiman? Are you out of your mind?

  • That can be asked of most celebrities. But I wouldn't apply this to Mr. Gaiman, however, since I find his work delightful, even if you find it mediocre.

  • shouldn't the question be, "how do such judgmental idiots like you manage to even learn to write?"

  • Might I ask then, exactly what graphic novels you'd consider to be exemplary, then? Or, in that sense, modern fantasy novels?

I'd like to know what your comparisons are.

Personally, I consider him a master, but I've always prefered his short stories to his full blown novels. I think thewy do better shorter than longer, save for American Gods. But of course, that's just me.

  • Then you cant have read Good Omens...

  • If you're adressing me, then, I must say I have read Good Omens and adored it. However, that was a joint effort, and I was more reffering to his solo work.

  • oooh...donuts...

    I mean...Neil Gaiman. *grin*

    Great stuff!

    Thank you.

    wordwan

  • no author reads his own work as well as neil...thx for posting this

  • The greatest modern author and weaver of stories.

I heard he is attached to directing the film adaptation of his short novel 'Coraline'.

    Can't wait.

  • Good instructions! ~_^ I wouldn't trust the wolves much though, and be more suspicious of creatures that tell you they hunger...they may decide to eat You.

  • Especially if they come out of your walls!

  • What a wonderful poem! =)

  • why does this have only six ratings when some mildly entertaining video about mentos and diet coke has thousands. i wish more would at least consider looking for things outside the obvious. And also that i was a better speller with proper gramar.

  • It probably only has six ratings because there are so many versions of it posted...?

  • yep

  • He is quite lovely, isnt he?

  • I was in Berkeley that night, front row... gosh I love Neil Gaiman's little voices when he reads (especially his frightened ingenue voice).

  • I do adore Neil and his work.

He is a lovely fellow...I should very much like to see him live.
