The Earths PRECESSION happens every 26,000 years. Precession is the Earths "wobble". Kind of like a spinning top. This is due to a gyroscopic wobble of earth's spin axis that takes 26000 years to complete.

I agree with 'Mr Education' that Dec 21/2012 isn't going to be 'doomsday' but his education obviously was not in astronomy. The Sun, Earth and the blackhole do not align perfectly every year? Where did he hear that? Harvard or Hogwarts? Is he basing this on the theory that the earth goes around the Sun annually so therefore must align annually? If so this is a common basic mistake as we move above and below the black holes gravitational plane in long cycles. Look up 'the galactic plane'.

i think your friend may be talking about our solar system passing through the center of the galactic plane. The last time that happened was 3 million years ago and it takes 30 million years to get to that point so we wont pass through it for a longggggggggg time.

And its not exactly true they ran outta space (i no its a joke) but theyre calendar spans 5000 years which ends on december 12th 2012. I agree with 'Mr Education' that Dec 21/2012 isn't going to be 'doomsday' but his education obviously was not in astronomy. The Sun, Earth and the blackhole do not align perfectly every year? Where did he hear that? Harvard or Hogwarts? Is he basing this on the theory that the earth goes around the Sun annually so therefore must align annually? If so this is a common basic mistake as we move above and below the black holes gravitational plane in long cycles. Look up 'the galactic plane'.

The winter solstice giving us the apparent alignment of the sun in the middle of the milky way does happen every year
But the real alignment happens every 33 million years,but I think he answered on the first one since he probably isnt aware of the mistake about the latter (since this wont occur for another 30 million years..that doesnt look like a thing you can accidentally be mistaken about..little does he know :P)

Galactic alignment occurs every 26,800 years. This being the alignment of the December solstice with the galactic equator as result of the precession of the equinoxes. On 4 occasions in the cycle our galactic centre aligns with the sunrise of a solstice or equinox. Tyson's correct where the sun, being half a degree, remains aligned ( imperfectly ) with the galactic equator for over 30 years due to the movement of the earths wobble taking just under 72 years per degree... but nothing will happen!

Dr. Neil didn't do his research. Yes the earth sun and galactic center do align but because of the precession of the equinoxes & solar apex we will also align with the galactic equator, movement of our solar system through space. Along the galactic equator astrophysicists find highly concentrations of gamma rays flowing. So the Mayans were right to depict it as a stream of energy, see SuperWave theory, which happens every 12,885.75 years. My video gives reference to all this data.
