  • This makes me want to play bass...so many memories

  • @anrchstpunk1

    Start playing then.

  • Loving the videos as always, and trying to recreate (although poorly) the quality of your videos. One question, how do you get such a clean recorded tone? What do you use to record the audio? I've tried many things but direct to my laptop was the best I could do. As always, great video!

  • @RushBass1974

Thanks. I describe in detail how I record in the left hand side of my channel. Going direct seems like it would be the best way to go about it but that's beyond me at this point.

  • all of your bass covers are awesome. I wish you the best with your battle with cancer. Also I like your masks.

  • @chums122

Thank you for the compliment and well wishes. Hopefully the cancer won't come back but I'm being closely monitored and will know pretty much right away if it does. Most of the masks are from Death Studios.

  • TJH3113 not only is this some tuff stuff to just play ,but play In studio fashion! Great job!

Do you play as a hobby or do you actively Gig in band? Do you play any other genres? Like jazz ,r&b, funk etc?

  • @genmed42

Thank you very much. I play for my own enjoyment at this point. In the past, I played a bit of everything in cover bands but progressive rock has always been my favorite thing to play.

  • God that is a fucking sexy bass. Those 30 years pay off don't they? Lol. Oh, question. So far I've only seen u play a 4 and 5 string. So, 1. have you played a 6. And 2, out of the 4, 5 and 6 string, which one do you prefer.

  • @POPCORN454545

Yeah, nothing looks like a Ric. I don't think I've ever played a 6 string. I don't care for tapping and real extended range styles of playing. I prefer the 4 string over the 5. the B string makes a nice thumb rest though.

  • @TJH3113 Yeah buddy. OH, you know what you should really try playing? Driven. That is a really good song from Rush. Off Test for Echo. Fairly deep bass in that one.

  • Apart from being a great cover anyway - the middle bass section is superb. Bravo!

  • @floouk

    Thanks a lot.

  • man u killed it, Howd you learn the lick before the solo?

  • @ColdBlooded97

Thanks. I learned to play by ear - lust listening closely and trying to repeat what I heard.

  • Most excellent playing. Are you ever going to do a slower breakdown like you did on Limelight? Because of your video, I can play Limelight, thanks!

  • @enahcs

Thank you. Perhaps I will do a breakdown of the solo part in the near future. Thanks for the suggestion. Glad you got Limelight down.

  • i love your tone

  • @Shadic159

    Thanks.

  • your great

  • @SuperMrBeiber

    Thank you.

  • sick

  • @cbarrett34

    Thanks.

  • I can't believe I haven't found you until now. I need to start practicing more if I even want to hope to reach this level of playing.

  • @Reardenlife1957

    Thanks.

  • what is your favorite bass part to play?

  • @gnosis2012

I like the song "Prime Mover" a lot.

  • Thanks for sharing your mad bass skills!

  • @gnosis2012

    Thanks.

  • WoW! just WoW! we are not worthy to breathe the same air as you and Geddy! Stellar job on my favorite bass part. You sooo rock!

  • @gnosis2012

Don't get carried away now...but thank you anyway.

  • Were all those masks of normal looking people when you started? Your sheer awesomicity must have turned them into monsters. My face certainly looked different after that solo section.

  • @tasdau

    Hah!

  • Do you pinch to get this tone or simple pizzicato? Nice cover, i enjoy listening your covers all day :D

  • @VinnWi

Thank you very much. I'm not sure what you mean by "pinch" but I do only play pizzicato or finger-style.

  • @TJH3113 Oh yeah, sorry for that, what i meant was if you "play hard" like punching hard the string to get a more strong and crunch tone or if you just play soft xD

  • @VinnWi

I play fairly hard (though not nearly as hard as I used too) but have the bass set up with light strings, the action low and the neck fairly straight to get the most "clack and grind" as I can from it without killing myself.

  • @TJH3113 Hah i see. You got a nice tone there, cheerz :D

  • @TJH3113 Such talented musician !

  • Pretty Cool. God must be playin' bass right now,UP THERE....

  • @MrAlexisEscalante

    Thanks.

  • Great cover thanks for uploading.. what do you prefer? Rick or fender, Ive always loved the tone and overall sound of the rick. But im not a bass player, just love listening to a Good bass layer thanks again all your vids are awesome

  • @tutoch

Thank you. I think the jazz bass is a much more versatile instrument.

  • Great Bass Guitar and Cover...one of my favs.

Whenever the solo section comes up...you know when all 3 of them are soloing at the same time, I have to always tell myself ahead of time, now just listen to Alex, Geddy, or Neal throught the whole solo..but I can't the engineer did a masterful job of mixing. It's hard to believe Geddy made up so many killer killer Bass lines.

  • @ShinobisZ

Thanks. Yes, this is truly a great example of the "Three-Ringed-Circus" aspect of the band. Amazing.

  • Great Bass Guitar and Cover...one of my favs.

  • Do you alternate the fore and ringe fingers of the right hand?

  • @Niqcko1

I use my forefinger (index) and middle fingers. Though sometime I'll just use my forefinger. But never my ring finger.

  • Can’t remember if I commented on this before but having just watched it again I had to…. “WOW! Fan-bloomin-tastic.” Hope you’re doing ok. Best wishes, as ever :-)

  • @JesusLittle

    Thanks a lot.

  • @legiTwitch

    Thank you very much.

  • you nailed the tone, song, and lines.. great job

  • @blah114a

    Thanks a lot.

  • John Entwistle famously said that he hated wood b/c you constantly had to adjust it: I've had to tweak the action on my Jack Casady Epiphone a lot as well. None of my necks give me any reason for concern, but I do have to adjust them fairly frequently. I've been thinking about getting a sunburst Geddy Lee, so naturally I was drawn to your videos. I think I'm gonna pull the trigger and get one.

  • @Philosopher131

I tend to set my necks very straight with low action so if the neck loosens up even a bit it becomes nearly unplayable. On any MusicMan basses I've had, I'd rarely have to adjust the necks and when I did, they were simple to adjust and very responsive. The jazz bass is my favorite at this time.

  • Nice playing. And a beautiful Ric. I've got 5 myself! That's obviously a Hipshot bridge, and I'm assuming a Bartolini pickup in the bridge. Neck too? How do you like the sound vs. Ric stock pickups?

  • @Philosopher131

Thanks. You're right about the Hipshot but the pick-ups are stock. I really like how the pole pieces are adjustable. It's a big help in balancing the sound out. My neck needs constant attention though, how about yours?

  • @buttersbass34

    The Jazz bass.

  • Very Cool! Love the Rick!

  • @Staxrock

    Thanks.

  • okay i just got a rickenbacker 2010 model

what are your knobs at to get the geddy lee sound

  • @bennlolzzz

Everything full up and both pickups selected. Congratulations.

  • @movies4u27

    Cool. Don't stop now. Thanks.

  • You Rickenbacker is just as beautiful as mine!

  • @NapoleanXV

Yes, yours sounds great as well.

  • Been playing bass not quiet 4 years, thought "oh this and yyz don't sound to hard I'll try them out" my right wrist committed suicide, and the fingers on my left hand are traumatized for life. never again shall I doubt the skill of geddy lee.

  • @YellingAtEveryone

Just keep at it and it will all fall into place.

  • Cyclops Mask is amazed.

  • @lavaxtris1

Thanks. The one on the left is from Darkside Studio and the one on the right is from Death Studios.

  • fantastic.

  • @o0Muzik0o

    Thanks.

  • hi ....do you think ghost notes are an integral part of Geddy´s sound???....do you think he does them on purpose???.....

    Regards as usual

  • @Sanson101

Yes, I do think that "ghost notes" are an integral part of his sound. He really went wild with them on the Power Windows / Hold Your Fire albums. He'd vary them from heavily muted notes to straight "tics" with no note value assigned to them. I'm not sure what purpose he uses them for but I've always used them quite a bit myself (sometime too much). I would use them for time keeping and to help "lock in" with whatever music I happened to be playing.

  • Thanks for the videos sir, having such a template makes learning these songs way easier!

  • @YbborUberAlles

Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm really happy that you find them useful.

  • You are realy good, I love your rick bass and the wall behind you... are you made it?

one more question, do you think that rick can play everything like other bass do (fender for example) or you prefer your fender you use in other videos for playing other songs? I mean are you need second bass if you have a rick?

  • @MikeKamPit

Thank you. No, I just collect the masks.

In my opinion, the Ric does "not" sound good on everything. To me, the Fender is a much more versatile instrument.

  • Geddy Lee is the GOD of Bass.. but you're his assistant dude! great cover.. i've been practising for 2 weeks and managed only to make it half as good as you! Considering this is one of his easiest songs :((

  • @mrxxx

Please! If you lay it on any thicker I'll have to tunnel out from under it. But thank you anyway.

I'm quite sure it took much longer than two weeks for me to get this song down. And myself, I'd consider it to be one of his "signature" songs and pretty high up there on the difficulty scale.

  • @TJH3113 really you consider this as difficult? I mean.. if you compare it to villa strangiato and yyz, then the level of difficulty of those would be at least "impossible" which I don't think so :) since you're so helpful, i would abuse a bit from you >:) which Rush songs do you consider as the "easiest".. i'm quite new to them.. my playing style has been mostly RHCP, Foo fighters and it's definately a big jump from there!

  • @mrxxx

Sure. The bass under the guitar solo is one of his finer moments. The hardest thing about La Villa is the bass solo. YYZ is probably his masterpiece from a technical standpoint.

Honestly, I wouldn't consider "any" RUSH songs easy but some of the songs I started out on were off the "All The World's A Stage" album - Bastille Day, Fly By Night, Lakeside Park, Something For Nothing...

  • i'm so excited. i'm going to my first rush concert in a few weeks. its going to be amazing.

  • @WaterhouseFilms

    Cool. Have a great time.

  • Excellent! Very fluid, u are all over it!

  • @deadreich

    Thanks.

  • i wanna see you do this song on a fretless. do you have one? i'm fixing to get a mexican jazz fretless... caint wait

  • @jimmyjohnsman1

I never got into playing fretless. I owned one once and it never got much use. Good luck with yours.

  • As always, PERFECT!

  • @macmillantac501

    Thank you.

  • b e a u t i f u l bass line!

    and a good performance too!

  • @pponi

    Thank you.

  • You nailed this song, man!

  • @BassSlappingLZ

Thanks. I've been playing it since it came out so I've had a bit of practice at it.

  • I like the part where Troy plays the bass like God

  • @TheMooneyguy

Though shall not worship false idols.

  • @TJH3113 ...unless they deserve it

  • @abcman7913

    Hah!

  • I love the punch and the tone of your basses. I sub'd

  • @RadioMasterDude

    Thanks.

  • Again 1word Awesome! To a T, Im a bass player thats kinda put my music in the back burner for years but damn you give me inspiration to get going again, very nice.

  • @ge0624me

Thanks. I'm glad you're feeling inspired. Now get out there and rock - and roll the bones. Get busy!

  • I can't add any other superlative other than what's already been communicated here. I'm trying to pick apart the solo right now, and your demonstration here gave me some ideas. Thanks for the vid and masterful playing as usual!

    Aloha,

    Dave

  • @kawika5150

Thanks. Just take the solo part one cycle at a time (I think there are six) and get them to the point where you can string them together.

  • This is truly amazing. To be as talented as this.... it blows my mind. I can play all of Freewill on bass, all except for the solo. It just bugs me! My hands, especially fingers, start to feel so sore and tiring, and I just end up having to stop! To have talent this incredible is a very lucky thing.

  • @jerrythepotato1919

Thank you very much. I'm glad you like the way I play but any "talent" I may possess is the result of a lot of practice - I can honestly say that I have no real "natural" ability, just patience and persistence.

Just keep playing and each time you play a difficult song, go for as long as you can and then push yourself a couple a couple of extra notes. Eventually you'll build strength and stamina and you'll be off and running.

  • amazing! i wish i could play like u one day maybe.. but man i think u did this MORE than justice!

  • @theoomp90

Thanks. Just keep playing and you'll get there.

  • That's it, your now my official rush cover bassist!!

  • @TheUnknown858

    It would be my honor.

  • Holy Shit, you're good! You make that bass sing. My humble adoration. I could never learn Freewill completely...it kicked my butt.

  • @Jambo6813

Thanks. Don't give up on "Freewill", just keep plugging away at it and before you know it you'll be on to the next challenge.

  • Just started learning this one today, for some reason forgot all about it.

The solo section didn't seem all that hard at first, but that little measure or so with all the triplets is something else. And I thought I had the Geddy Lee Triplet down...

  • @Jalreal

I remember it being quite a challenge when learning it myself.

  • I swear I saw you smile as you played the solo part. Isn't Rush fun?

  • @RCAvhstape

It was probably more of a grimace. Fun - and challenging.

  • I've always loved the solo section in this song, because it's like all three of them are playing solos at the same time and it all sounds so perfect together.

  • @Legionbass19

I couldn't have put it better myself.

  • Your videos are great, I just picked up the bass recently and they are a great help, thanks.

  • @chris37865

Thanks. I'm glad you're finding them useful.

  • Man you rip at bass, your covers all sound so clean its awesome

  • @grypper4life

    Thank you.

  • @johnnydrinkalot

You're exactly right about the ESL inspired part. I loved the sound of his bass on that album. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting, I appreciate it.

  • i love the sound of a ric, i wish i could afford one and learn to play bass and rush. although a fender jazz or precision wouldnt be bad, nothing is the same as a ric

  • @tmn1231

They are quite expensive (I got a great deal on this one). I think the Jazz bass is a much better value and a bit more versatile than the Rick, but I do like my Rickenbacker.

  • Jeesh! Those Ric's sure have a sound all their own! Awesome playing, great cover!

  • @laney50w

They really do. Especially when you start beating on them a little bit. Thanks.

  • @TJH3113

Way nice job. I've been playing Rush songs for years. You do a great job on everything I've seen/heard. Thanks for sharing.

  • @jamjammerjam

    Thank "you".

  • Hey!! As always, a perfect version. Is a extremely difficult song, the bass part is really tough, especially in the solo part. This is basically the song that made me fall in love with Rush!! Just saw them here in Brazil 3 weeks ago, just fantastic. When they played "Freewill", I just get no reaction, such a tremendous experience!! Btw, I listened to Frank Marino, and liked a lot!! Cheers man. Bye.

  • @kickerpenis

That's awesome you got to see them. How many people were at the show do you think? You guys have big audiences over there. I still have to check out your "Day Of The Eagle" video, it's on my to-do list. I thought Frank Marino might be right up your alley. Take care.

  • @TJH3113 Well, they made 2 shows here, one in São Paulo (about 40.000 people), and one in Rio de Janeiro (which I was, about, 20.000 people). Amazing crowd, Geddy and Alex were very grateful. About my video, feel free man!! Cheers!!

  • Okay, well anything that you could do would be helpful for me. I really want to be able to say that I was able to learn a Geddy Lee bassline, but I just don't know if I'm up to it yet. Let me know. Thanks.

  • @panteralover23

It might be a few weeks but get started on the verses and choruses yourself and see how you make out with them.

  • @TJH3113, alright, I'll do my best. Geddy's not going to be an easy feat for me.

  • Smooth again. Nice job again.

  • @bassplayer7420

    Thanks again.

  • Could you possibly do a tutorial over the entire song? I really want to learn how to play it, but Geddy Lee's just a beast.....

  • @panteralover23

I could probably do that. It just won't be right away and I'd probably focus more on the solo section. So try to get as far as you can on the verses and chorus' on your own.

  • Damn dude awesome cover! Love the bass too. I'm currently learning this song, not the easiest, but worth the work.

  • @Zeon707

Thanks. Like I said to "Fearof the dard987" below, "There are six sections or cycles to the solo - just take them one at a time until you're able to string them together."

If you need a hand with it just ask.

  • Totally awesome as always. Just out of curiousity, at the start of the solo section do you prefer his live version with the open As between those first Ds, or the way it is on the record as you played it? Personally i love how he does it live, but props for sticking exactly to the record the entire time, something i don't think i'll ever get my fingers around.

  • @FearOfTheDark987

Live, it's fast and loose so personally, I prefer the studio version because it's a bit tighter. It might also have to do with the fact that it took so long to get the studio version down that I just didn't have the heart to learn a nearly completely different live version. Don't sell yourself short - with time, practice and patience anything can be accomplished. There are six sections or cycles to the solo - just take one at a time until you're able to string them together

  • Why am I just finding out about you now ... You are my new God !!!

  • @biotonk

    Oh please...

  • Watching you play the solo just amazes me because it's exactly the way Geddy play's it. It almost makes me feel like quitting bass because I'm so far from your level of skill.

  • @riskydiablo Thank you and don't get discouraged. I've been playing for over thirty years and have a lot of time invested in these songs.

  • @TJH3113 That makes a lot of sense:P The only songs i can tackle from Rush after almost two years of playing is Stick It Out, Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Virtuality and Vital Signs! Would you say that you would have been able to play the solo part from Freewill after playing bass for two years? Also, if you don't mind answering another question, what was your first bass?

  • @riskydiablo I was probably playing for around 3 years when Permanent Waves came out and I began learning material from that album. It was a very slow process, first trying to pick out the parts by ear, then trying to play them up to speed to make sure they were correct and finally, stringing all the pieces together into the completed song. It took quite some time and a lot of practicing to get to the point where I played them with some fluidity.

  • @riskydiablo Part Two - My first bass was an awful medium scale Cameo bass. My mother bought it for me from a record store that sold instruments and offered lessons as well.

2nd - medium scale Fender MusicMaster - that was "big time" for me.

3rd - Rickenbacker 4001 Fireglow $425 brand new which was a lot of money at the time.

    4th - Fender Precision

    5th - Peavey T40

    6th - Rickenbacker 4001 Fire Engine Red

    7th - Ibanez Roadstar II

    8th - Musicman Sterling

    9th - Musicman Stingray 5

    10th - This Rick

  • @TJH3113 I really wish i could have Geddy's Fender Jazz Bass. It looks as if it plays extremely well ( when Geddy uses it anyway ). Which bass would you recommend as a long time companion for my fingers:)?

Ricks are a long time favorite for Geddy and I'm thinking of getting that one but the Jazz Bass is so signature that it's hard to pass up.

  • @riskydiablo I'll always associate Geddy more with the Rickenbacker than any other bass. I'm partial the my Rickenbacker at this time but I think the Jazz Bass is a much better value at nearly half the cost. I think Musicman basses are well made and a great value as well.

  • Do you work in a mask shop or do you just have a big collection? LOL. Great cover and AMAZING tone. 10 stars out of 5!

  • @Fenderwolf95 I'm just a collector. Thanks.

  • incredible, the bass sound is beautiful!

    congratulations from Brazil!!!

    RUSH EVER!

  • @rafamckagangnr22 Thank you. I appreciate it.

  • Holycrap dude!

    Nice Bass and nice cover!

    Congrats from Brazil!

  • @Etobass88 Hey! Thank you very much.

  • Excellent job! Very, very well done!

  • @floouk Thanks a lot.

  • A very common geddy move is playing two sixteenth notes on a string then an eighth on the string below it. You do this flawlessly! How do you do it? It's probably my achilles heel

  • @ak47dragunov You're right. I refer to them as triplets and I'd have to sit down with my guitar and analyze the process myself because it's just second nature at this point. It's almost as if you're only working to get the first two notes out then gravity takes care of the third (just by your finger dropping to the string below or above it) if you know what I mean. I'll try and reply again once I can communicate it better to you. Thank you.

  • WOW! (solo) 5*

  • @wnils I can remember pulling my hair out over this one.

  • I just cant ever see me being able to tackle this one or yyz. To me, they are the holy grail of Ged's material.

  • @wnils From what I heard of your playing there's nothing that would hold you back. If you can do the triplets you can play any RUSH song. Except that flamenco thing he started doing from Counterparts forward, I've never messed with that technique myself. I'm glad to see he's moving away from it somewhat. God, I am a GEDDY GEEK!

  • @TJH3113 Thanks for the vote of confidence. :)

I have been working on the flemenco thing with some songs.....and I now do a fair amount of Far Cry using it. He uses it all over the place post HYF and up. I used Animate as my "training" song for this tech. it's the whole song. Talk about an endurance test!

  • I'm featuring you after I have the anime girl bassist dude up for a couple more days :D

  • @vineyardedge That would really make my day. Thanks.

  • sick dude!

  • @ThrasherAleX1 thanks.

  • @ThrasherAleX1 I AM MEXICAN, SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH
