Hey can someone help me I plan on buying a used drumset, practicing like crazy this spring and summer then when i go to a new school next year start a band, my dad says i need to read music but is that really necessary? ringo starr doesnt phil collins doesnt(he reads his own style) cause im good at figuring out what the beat is in songs i listen to so should i learn to read music or not?
I don't want to go against your dad's suggestion. But, you don't need to read music to play drums. It actually hurts the "feel" part of playing if you read. I've known many drummers who read and they can't play with emotion because they look at the sheet. But, don't be 1-dimensional - be a real musician and learn piano and/or guitar. Phil Collins plays piano - so, don't dismiss learning to read music. It will help you when you want others to "hear" the music in your head.
@navmajid thanks my dad plays bass and he can read tabs but not actual sheet music, he says he wishes hed learn how, and i have an idea for a style of my own thanks and keep rocking
If you decide to take formal lessons, most likely your teacher will show you how to read music. Now, even though it is not absolutely necessary to play the drums, it helps you a lot when trying to learn more advanced stuff. But in any case, it is better to learn the song and just use the music sheet as a guide; that's what most professional musicians do when playing live.
@therailwizard1994. Well I think your father is right you need to understand the beat in order to know it, like when to stop and begin again, In my opinion is very necessary. Ringo star is good but if you really listen, he only plays back beats he is a master for that and Phill Collings I don't like he style that much. But the thing is that ones you learn to read it ones you listen to a beat you gonna be able to dissect that drum beat, It will take A little time and effort but it will be worth.
@Alteir97 - Ha ha haaaaaaaaa... thanks, buddy! You're really very kind.
In playing drums, you're using all four limbs. To sing as well while playing drums is quite taxing on both. Sometimes, timing goes off and/or the singing goes off - most of these "critics" commented on my poor drumming. And, I believe they are correct.
But, I "TRIED" to do both parts of this song - those critics didn't get that that was the focus of this posting.
The more I watch your cover your all over the place not in time the beat is to fast and the fills are to much slow it down and learn the count and you will be ok Sorry brother the truth hurts somtimes but I call it costructive criticisum .
WOW this SUCKS check out my drum cover of this song to see how its done Dude ADURANT42 the bass is all off as well as the high hat count But keep practicing
Do you mean that you are trying to play and sing this song at the same time?
If so, you have to do it one step time - someone else has pointed out that I am not playing it correctly. But, if you trying to do both, it just takes time - try a basic beat while singing without fills, eventually you'll get the fills in while singing.
Good luck practicing and thank you for compliments - I appreciate it.
insane, two thumbs waaay up for a great song, one of my personal favs, but yea, only flaw is timing. i thought the bass drum was good tho. i still cant get in in sync like u...
Thanks, irondagger93... much appreciated. Yeah, there are flaws - my timing was terrible, but I'm certain Henley recorded the vocals separate to the drums. It sounds much different live and Henley is definitely a better drummer and singer than me - otherwise, I probably wouldn't be in the basement! :)
@Bimbeaux hey man, it don sound bad to me. but hell what do i kno? i guess all are entitled to their own opinion. he's better then me n thats all that counts.
your high hat beat is off listen to the song again...a lot of your drumming is off including your bass. as a remix it would be okay. but other than that its pretty
