The greatest song ever to quote federal and state budget expenditures. Heh, heh.
Seriously, though, I admire what Ryche's merging of substantial lyrici with hooks and melody. I saw this tour back then. The shirts were, let's say, far from typical
Geoff has a great range vocally, and he uses that to his advantage. Not so much in this particular song, but in others such as Silent Lucidity and Anybody Listening.
Even if this is a more streamlined song, that doesn't mean it still isn't great (though the same can't be said for ALL bands streamlining their sound). Just listen to DeGarmo's solo. Simple? Yes. Effective? HELLZ YEAH. It's full of emotion and beauty. I'd much rather listen to that than pointless 1,000 note a second wankery. Now excuse me while I go kick myself for not owning a Queensryche album.
I can't believe people think this is the best 'Ryche album. The music on this album is more commercial pop-rock than progressive metal, or anything decent. Happy glam synthesizers, typical poppy choir vocals, cheesy ‘goodwill’ lyrics, Empire has got it all! This was my second Queensrÿche album, the first was Operation: Mindcrime, and after hearing Empire, I almost gave up on buying more 'Rÿche music. I was glad that I didn’t, since their other albums are all better.
@razorslice17 i disagree....and i listened to them long before you i heard self titled first then the warning...rage for order....mindcrime ...and this album is a very polished streamlined greatness
@arkee71: I agree. Let's make a distinction between selling out and making an effort to make one's sound more accessible. I love your "polished streamlined greatness."
@arkee71: I agree with you. A distinction must be made between increasing the accessibility of a band's sound and selling out commericially. Ryche, to me, aims for the former and succeeds. Love your description of the album as "polished streamlined greatness."
@cohenfs yeh..that was all i was tryin to say...im glad someone gets it..lol..thanx for compliment as well...i saw them live during this tour...incredible cohesive unit..really pro..you know...i like shows like that..i feel like im gettin my moneys worth...i will always love them...take care
@arkee71: I did too! In Chicago. Do you remember the T-shirts they sold? Holy sh*t. I didn't buy one because it was a little radical looking for me. Heh, heh. Again, though, proof they weren't selling out.
@cohenfs well i remember the design i bought..which was just empire cover...lol..i dont really remember the other designs...they were very early 90s...awesome though..i cant remember who opened for em either...i think it was steelheart lol
@razorslice17 maybe. but the lyrics on this album are far better an any crap i have heard in the past 8 years. music now is just noise. theres no meaning to whats being said. at least queensryche had a message to each song. and usually a powerful one at that.
@razorslice17: They concentrated more on hooks, melody and a pop sheen make their music more accessible, but tough for me to buy the "commercial sell out" line anyway. This tune, after all, contains narrative on federal and state budget expenditures, which is risky, but Ryche makes it work with masterful chops and songcraft, which is astonishing. Ryche aimed to broaden it's audience but I think their inspiration to do so was far more artistic than a desire to peddle product for fame and fortune.
Oh man, I miss the metal of the early 90's soooo much. Queensryche, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Pearl Jam, even Extreme. How much music has changed (and not in a good way). Are we getting old.
@PillsC2E this was a show called headbangers ball, it aired late saturday nights for an hour, two if you were lucky...mtv was and always will be for pussies.
Steve Perry? Hardly! Geoff Tate is in a class by himself - amazing singer (not that SP isn't). For those that aren't familiar with Queensryche, you really need to get "Operation: Mindcrime" and listen to that. INCREDIBLE album -- Queensryche is severely underrated. One of the best bands ever - IMO
Contacted them last year by email......they brought my 85 year old Father on stage to honor him for his service in WW II...one of the greatest times of my life!!!!!
I had heard of this band long ago, but have only heard of this song and Jet City Woman. Then recently, I found Empire " CD in a lost and found box at work. Although it is from 1990, I love it. Great sound. Who besides me thinkls that the lead singer sounds like Steve Perry from Journey?
the best thing in Queensryche its his unique sound, their music sounds like an evolution of the prog-rock, they didn´t sound like the other bands of the 80's (unless their early albums). The 90s have a bunch of great albums of heavy metal ("dog eat dog" of Warrant, for example), but Nirvana's way rules in those days... ;)
Queensryche is awesome their Empire Music and Music Video is pretty Dark and Epic that it would fit in Sonic SATAM had it lasted I would hire these guys ta make music fer Sonic games not Crap 40.
Really? More like Peter Gabriel when he was with Genesis or Bruce Dickenson from Maiden. Chester Bennington from Linkin Park or Cedric Bixler-Zavala from Mars Volta sound more like Lee then Geoffe Tate. Loved Queensryche from thier Empire days, though for real.
Interesting... the warning heard in the song is the slowly building gang empire that has been destroying our nation one community at a time. And we are helpless to stop it. We are truly a nation of fools.
Everyone is hearing it wrong. He says "a sixth percent of federal spending", not six percent.

Okay, now I realize just how idiotic my earlier post sounds. I apologize for my error in logic...normally, I am much better at math. In fact, I've had nearly 100% each year since my first year at high school. So, before you insult my apparent lack of intellect again, let me remind you that you don't even know who I am. Yes, I screwed up. It should have been obvious to me. But, everyone screws up a few times.
Don't worry...I'm just ashamed that I made such a blatant mistake. Congratulations on your abilities in math...in my experience the amount of people who can do arithmetic with any skill are few.
You know I was fucking happy to see Jani lane in this. Warrant had a song similar to this with things being fucked up called Uncle Toms Cabin about murder and corruption in the police force.
Before you jump on the MTV Band wagon about "HAIR METAL SUCKS!" watch that video first Metallica may have hated Hair metal but Megadeth like alot of the Hair Metal bands Dave just calls it 80s Metal you were either Heavy,Thrash,Power or just Metal. people bitch now but its all the same Genra of music METAL!
That introduction with Jani Lane and Rachtman pretty much nutshells the beginning of the popularity shift from 1980's "decadence and party" hair rock to the 1990's "thinking man's" rock led by Queensryche, Pearl Jam, etc. huh?
Long story short, out defense was based on an enemy coming at us tanks, bombers, missiles, etc, not a bunch of guys hijacking planes with box cutters.
We probably could have stopped the 2nd WTC attack and the Pentagon attack by shooting the planes down, but that's a civil rights swamp I don't think ANY president would want to jump in.
Not really. You have to take into account response times and that's assuming planes are standing by on alert. Getting a fighter up isn't as simple as starting a car. And nobody even considered terrorism till after the second plane hit.
The idea of planes being used as weapons is an OLD one! Just look at Kamakazee's ! There was a hijacking in France in93' that wasnt allowed to leave the ground once it was learned that they had no demands other than FUEL!
Yeah, you're VERY right. it's an old one, but not one we were really expecting. We're slowly evolving our military, but it was built to fight traditional wars with traditional enemies...
That's what I was thinking. The only thing is, law enforcement would as easily be used as a tool of "The Empire" as the military to control the people.
In most police states, aren't they pretty much the same thing?

Hair metal is great you asswipe. I don't care what people say about it. It has some of the greatest solos and memorable songs of all time.
razorslice17 2 years ago
i dont really like too much glam, but im a gentry player, which means i play everything, the only RATT song i really like is ROUND AND ROUND, cinderella isnt the great thoug, and plus, you cant say 1 whole genre sucks, there are people who hate the other bands listed, i myself love thrash metal which is most of those bands you listed...METALLICA 4 EVER

heh, PROGRESSIVE metal.
It sure ain't Power metal, and it's about 100 miles away from Thrash, but it IS the coolest damn thing to ever exist.
