Josh is an amazing singer/songwriter/performer. Met him at one of his shows one time, and he is simply *THE* nicest guy you could ever meet. Dude wrote a novel too! Seriously, check his other music besides this record, especially Hello Starling, Golden Age of Radio, and The Animal Years.
He's always reminded me of Dylan too, but he sings better.
I woke up to this on NPR on an interview - not so sure about this production! Solo guitar was great but I wanted to re-record this song myself with some more instruments but this is a bit crazy - Your heartstrings are pulled by the Eb-Bb-Ab-Bb chords with the third in the bass for Bb and Ab - a diatonic walkdown in Eb that keeps going to the 5th (Bb) as if that's the tonic but doesn't really resolve there so you start over at Eb
This was I believe the third episode, of the first season which would have been last March. The song came on during the last few minutes of the show when their daughter introduced her boyfriend to the family. The dialogue of everyone talking was muted so it was just this song, it was a very poignant scene.
@giraffe314 Start yourself with Lantern, The Curse, and Another New World-- but it's completely worthwhile to buy the whole album. Then, once you're completely in love with that, work your way backwards through his discography. You'll be overjoyed that you did!
@giraffe314 The Temptation Of Adam, Girl In The War, To The Dogs Or Whoever, Lantern, Thin Blue Flame, Here At The Right Time, Kathleen, Wings, Golden Age Of Radio, Harrisburg. That should be a good start for ya :) Beware though, his music can be addictive.
Yes, if you haven't heard Josh Ritter yet--this song should interest you in his great lyrics and energetic band. I have 9 CD's of his and am looking forward to more. Also--see him live every chance I get
just heard this song in the trailer for "The Other Woman" with Natalie Portman (LOVE HER!!) and fell in love with this song immediately! WOW! Love the "So Runs the World Away" Title also.. Perhaps I should check out his other songs ;-)
Josh Ritter is one of my favorites! I have loved him for years, so you can imagine how excited I was to hear him on the Parenthood tv show AND the soundtrack! You go, Josh!
@burcharg ~ Hahaha... I was just about to post that someone made a mistake and hit the "DISLIKE" button instead of the "LIKE" button. How could you NOT love this song or the artist. Beautiful music.
never heard of parenthood. went to a "listening party" which was lame cause i thought josh was going to be there, but instead there were 6 people listening to his cd in a cafe here in san francisco. enjoyed the music otherwise, and have listened to it about 100 times as well! gorgeous lyrics.

Another Parenthood watcher here. Great song, glad I found it on here. FYI for those that had trouble--if you go to the Parenthood page of NBC's website they list the music featured in each episode.
I too discovered this on parenthood, and something about it caught my attention. For one thing, it fight that ending scene well. Like others said, nbc dropped the ball on the credits, googling was the only refuge for those who wished to seek out this excellent song. I will definitely check out some other of Josh's stuff.
as many other people here, I heard this on Parenthood (great show) and absolutely LOVED it - googled it when the show ended. Gonna have to check out Josh Ritter, because this is just fantastic.
I too heard this song on Parenthood Tuesday evenning. I had to go to hula the next day and then fastforward through the Parenthood episode to get to the credits, but it wasn't listed. So i just went to you tube and typed in time love and change of time and sure enough there it was. It's a lovely song. The guy that posted this listed it as May 23, when it was March 23.
I lost my best friend Kathleen to cancer. I typed in "Kathleen" and discovered Josh. Then I found "Girl in the War". Both discribed her as if Josh knew her. I visit these songs often as a memorial. They bring me comfort and I feel closer to Kathy. Every song of Joshs' grabs at another memory. And isn't that what we hang on to, to get through the tough times? Thanks for your comment.

@Ivartshiva
It's an Eb-g-Ab-Bb7. The 5th7 solves the problem of flowing back to the tonic.
