A truly great album, that any classic hip hop fan can dive into and feel a part of, as Nas's takes you into a bunch of rememnesive memories of the past and how life really is, his smooth flow and phenomenal lyricism takes you in from the very first second to the last! and brainwashes you for almost 40 minutes, as you listen on with abseloute amazement and wonder.. 'how did anyone make an album as deep and great as this'!
Overall the whole album just pieced together abseloutley perfectly! Nas's smooth delivery and his reminisive yet genius lyricism over every beat on the album.. the beats went perfectly with all of Nas's lyrics and his flow perfectly.. The whole album is a work of pure art, and will always be remembered as the greatest hip hop album of all time.. If you were to describe the whole album in one word then the word would just have to be 'illmatic'..
And then the beat on It Aint Hard to tell which with the trumpets and the heavy beat in the background suggested to you without even knowing that it was the final track on the album, it seemed like the trumpet beat along with the sampled vocals suggested the end of the album for a reason i cant really explain.. meanwhile Nas remenised and reccaped over the album and his overall life experiences, and at the same time rapped about his style and anazlyzed himself.
the beat on represent which was similar to one love but seemed more gripping and less positive and slightly darker as Nas rapped over the beat about how Queensbridge was a criminal place to live, and how he was and lived while in the projects.
The smooth and mellow xylophone beat in memory lane which fitted perfectly with Nas's smooth, lazy but ear gripping flow (my personal fav on the album), the more gripping xylophone like beat on one love while Nas rapped on remenising on his street life and friends in Queensbridge, the smooth and slow yet very intense and grimey beat in one time 4 your mind.
Also, the beats on every track were truly brilliant! When you have Q-Tip, DJ Premier, Large Professor and Pete Rock all producing on the same album, you know it is going to be something truly special! Even without Nas's great lyricism and smooth jazzy flow over the mastarpieces of beats.. the raw beat of NY State of mind, the smooth and slow beat of lifes a bitch, the dark and grimey piano beat in the world is yours, the uplifting base and the jazzy trumpets on Halftime.
It really painted an image to the grimey way of life and culture that he lived, in the queensbridge projects, which he intended to do, and he deffinatley succeeded that! every metaphor, every word, every bar he rapped in all 10 tracks, had you hooked and you just wanted more and more.. it truly is a work of art, the way he rapped about the struggles and how he remenised back to his days of being a 'little shorty chilling on the bench' you felt as though you were being pulled into it yourself!
Nas used big words and metaphors and used word play in every track on Illmatic that most other street artists had never herd before..and he brought these words together to create the mona lisa of hip hop, the words and vocabulary fitted together perfectly, and sounded brilliant over Nas's jazzy flow and tone as he rapped. Every track, you could listen to and the next minute you had a picture in your head without even trying to picture it because his lyricism and flow was so deep and ear catching
Not one track was less than perfect.. and it all worked and fitted perfectly.. around the time street artists like Nas didnt use big words or have big word play, but Nas was and is now a VERY VERY smart person, partly due to he fact his dad was also a smart man who was also a blues musician, which is where Nas got his musical skills and jazzy style.. his father said by the age of 4, Nas could play every blues musician that he picked up within days, and that he was so natrually gifted!
After it was announced Nas was pushing out his first album, i expected he would take a bit of a mainstream switch, because of the fact all of the limelight was on him at the time But he stuck to his guns and spit what had been building up inside him for almost 20 years.. his experience of his father leaving, how he grew up in such a dangerous project, and how he had steadily addapted to street culture after bunking and dropping school, and all 10 tracks on the album were packed full of knowledge
Nas's philosiphical mind growing up with his street experiences growing up in Queensbridge, and his struggles growing up with the Street culture which he was steadily becoming part of, slanging rock after dropping out of 9th grade.. he takes all this brain power, philosophy and experience and puts it all onto one brilliant and breathtaking album. After he had his debut verse on Live at the Barbaque on Main Sources Breaking Atoms album, everyone was talking about him, because the verse was ILL!

My favorite songs on Illmatic in order: 1. NY State of Mind 2. One Love 3. Memory Lane 4. The World Is Yours 5. Life's a Bitch 6. Halftime 7. It Ain't Hard to Tell 8. One Time 4 Your Mind 9. Represent 10. The Genesis Wow that was extremely difficult and on some days those could be switched! Great Album!

Great review! I hope you keep these up, it made my day. My initial reaction to Illmatic was the same mix of rambling/loss for words as well, haha. Good stuff, classic album.
What most people don't realize (including you (alex703rockstar I would assume) is that the intro (The Genesis) is a very deep intro. He samples wildstyle one of the earliest films giving regard to hip hop. The sample he uses from wildstyle also has a story in its own.
Nice Review....Its nice to see people who respect real Hip Hop....and You should listen to Warren G's ''Regulate... G Funk Era'' 1994....its classic G FUNK...and you only have a small amount of hip hop reviews...Keep doing more!!!
Please refrain yourself from Black Culture. You have no right to question, criticize, or even agree with ANYTHING. No i didn't watch your video. I just seen your ugly ass face and wrote this message.
i think the intro does a lot for the album. it helps illustrates the album's mood and atmosphere perfectly and without it, the album would sound kind of awkward instantly starting off of ny state of mind.
Damn some of yall dumb man the dude just likes illmatic and so do I. Much respect for that man. I enjoyed your review and appreciate your love for REAL music
As much as i appreciate this being done by a kid who just enjoys good music, i just have to say this... Do some research before doing a review! The Intro is not a skit. The intro is from an old school Graffiti movie, and the music in the background is the theme song from that movie. It's called Subway Theme. And this particular movie has been very succesfull around sampling. Primo uses samples from that movie, he's not the only one though. "Is this what you want?" is a famous quote for instance.
@baltimoreblitz16 hes holdin it down, least hes appreciating 90's bangers even if he has got the re released black and white joint haha peace hot as hell my man, peace
ok hip-hop is usually more concience minded or involves actual thinking and has concepts to the lyrics, hip-hop is usually when you can close your eyes and see a story unfold.. rap is soulja boi... got it?
I realize that, but I always thought the argument was moot, because even artists that create hip hop music are still called rappers, not hip hoppers, so to me the terms are interchangeable.
and i hate how stupid people think this isnt a rap album...Rapping is an element of Hip Hop....hip hop isnt a form of music its a culture....Rap itself is the music portion of hip hop thus making this Nas cd a rap album...fucking hippie
That's false. I'ma die hard Redskins fan but obviously they're not the best in football. So that doesn't mean anything. I just like it the most. Then The World Is Yours & It Ain't Hard To Tell.
But sports is different, because the reason you like the Redskins isn't because you think they are the best, but in music you like a song the most because you think it's the best.
And, jeez, you are seriously nitpicking here. My favorite would have to be NY State Of Mind, but not by much, and there are other songs (namely, all of them) that all come damn close. There isn't a clear cut BEST is what I'm saying.
I didn't say you had to relate. I was asking if you did. Of course you can like the way the music sounds which anybody can but what I wanted to know is if you were a real Hip Hop fan. It just puzzles me.
You have to truly be a genuine fan & not a hypebeast. I just thought you was going around saying that Illmatic was this & that just cause you heard it was one of the greatest rap albums of all time. For instance I've just always loved rap. That's all I've ever listened to.
Look I don't got nuthin against you & you can listen to whatever the hell you want. I just don't want the game discraced. I just got so much love for the music. Even though I didn't create it. I don't want know fake niggas claiming somethin they don't really know. That's like somebody hoppin on a sports team just cause they did good they previous year & then the next year they hop on somebody else. It just irritates you. That's how it is for me.
Hey my man dont listen to all the negative feedback at least you recognized a classic and timeless album you a cool kid in my book half these kids today never even heard what you just heard in your review so you up more than a lot of these kids
Why'd you even do this review? Clearly you have nothing insightful to say. Through the whole review all you do is spout off broad & general comments like: "It's Amazing", " It's that good", "Awesome", you offer no points supporting your argument as to why this is a Classic hip hop album. What made this album a masterpiece? I want details & particulars, you didn't provide them & that is why this review fails.
You know, what, You´re right. It was more of a shock review because I liked it oh so much.
Anyway, I enjoyed this album because it wasn´t a bunch of claiming random shit. It was very genuine, and din´t make crime in the ghetto seem like a good thing, something most rappers do. He embraces his intelligence and uses it to deliver a message.
Also, the production also complements the lyrics perfectly, and it helps deliver the message too. He just uses the music that fits him best.
As to how I got into Illmatic, it was just because I used to listen to shitty pop/rap, and I realized how bad it was at one point, so I stopped listening to it altogether. Then, after I found some good rock music, I realized there must be good rap too, and I found this.
no because you are, your a little fucking pussy and i bet youve got about 3 friends hahaha, if i saw you out somewhere i would kick your ass and so would most other people, your a little bitch eccept it...
ooh, you're cool, threatening people over the net and saying you can kick their asses, man you sound tough. I bet you go and show all of your friends this, and then you just feel oh so swell.
Listen, if you're not going to comment about the actual review, then fuck off, you nimwitted cunt.
Oh, that's right, because you feel the need to go flaming people on youtube to keep your e-credibility up. Great job, I hope you feel so much better about yourself.
lol dat nigga said ak boyy wtf lmfao

Understandable smooth shit that murderers move wit"

Seriously, I don't get people. Why am I not a real hip hop fan? Because I'm white, makes no sense.
And yea..I'd rather not.
Alex703rockstar 2 years ago
Just look at yourself. Answer this. Why do you even like rap? Have you always been into it? Can u relate?
CCain23 2 years ago
No, I can't relate, but if people listened to music solely based on if they related to it or not, well then many people wouldn't listen to music.
I like when, because, when done properly, it's an incredible combination of meaningful lyrics and music to match it.
And why do I always have to be into it. Is it wrong to start listening it even if you didn't in your childhood?
I don't understand what you're trying to argue. At all.
Alex703rockstar 2 years ago

You have to truly be a genuine fan & not a hypebeast. I just thought you was going around saying that Illmatic was this & that just cause you heard it was one of the greatest rap albums of all time. For instance I've just always loved rap. That's all I've ever listened to.
CCain23 2 years ago
Oh, that's not what I meant at all. I think it's a great album, and just wanted to express that.
I really don't want to be a hypebeast as you put it, I just wanted to say how much I loved this.
Alex703rockstar 2 years ago
Look I don't got nuthin against you & you can listen to whatever the hell you want. I just don't want the game discraced. I just got so much love for the music. Even though I didn't create it. I don't want know fake niggas claiming somethin they don't really know. That's like somebody hoppin on a sports team just cause they did good they previous year & then the next year they hop on somebody else. It just irritates you. That's how it is for me.
CCain23 2 years ago
I'm not disgracing the game at all...
whatever.

He just uses the music that fits him best.

ok well there you go. I wasn't trying to put you down, just offer some constructive critcism for future reference.

No, it's fine, I'll try to do a better review next time, and I'll keep that in mind.

you are corny as hell, and you called AZ "AK", but at least you listen to better music than most kids your age. how'd you get into illmatic?
thisnamecantbetakenf 3 years ago
How am I corny?
As to how I got into Illmatic, it was just because I used to listen to shitty pop/rap, and I realized how bad it was at one point, so I stopped listening to it altogether. Then, after I found some good rock music, I realized there must be good rap too, and I found this.
Alex703rockstar 2 years ago
hey kid, don't listen to these haters... the album is the best. chyea
