I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and I ahve to keep my Gear in the bed of my truck in Summer Months. Otherwise my lens' look like a London Fog Factory LOL.
Just had that experience from our hotel room which was 64 degrees then went to the beach.... just this Aug 5, 2011. What I did was while in the hotel room I wrapped my camera with some soft cloth while inside my lowepro 200aw so far it prevented from condensation. I guess having it insulated worked. But my sister's camera was like whoa!!! so Foggy!!!
somone once told me if you put your gear in a plastic grocery bag it will stop the condensation, havent had a chance to try this as its not getting to humid here in canada yet!
I took some pictures on a cold windy day, I was only out for about 5 minutes, and when I got back to the car - beads of water formed on the uv filter...is that condensation because my car was warmer than outside, and is it ok? Did I hurt my camera? Did the camera get wet inside too? There seems to be nothing wrong with it at all, but it worried me since I've never had this happen before.
Living in Puerto Rico this is a constant problem. One thing we do is put the camera bag into a cooler when going indoors, to keep it warm. And of course in the car as well, an A/Ced car can be colder than a building. Also put the camera bag outside on the balconey to aclimate. In an emergency; hey there goes Big Foot, and the front element is fogged, you can place your palm on the front element to warm it, then wipe it off with a good lens cloth. Never change lenses when the camera is fogged
once i heard that if you put your lens and/or your camera into a plastic bag... at the moment of taking it out to a change of temperature.... causes the water in the ambient to condensate in the plastic bag and not inside the lens...... you should try it......
Hey Jared good tips bro, u live in Florida? If so around where asking cause I'm located in fort lauderdale, man would love to shoot as like your intern to learn man lol or any recommendation brother , thanks in advance , Eric
same situation here in the hot hot desert in Dubai! i used to wipe the condensation off with a soft cloth..now i know and i wont wipe and just wait...
The solution to this problem is easy. It works even when you want to suddenly go into a closed bathroom and shoot photos there. The bathroom air is more humid. If you want to go to a beach just put your camera in a large plastic bag (like a large dustbin liner) go to the beach, wait 7-8 minutes , take the camera out and start shooting. No problem with condensation or vapour fog!
I just had an issue with this. Only thing was I wasn't outside. I used my air duster for my computer to clean my lens and the cold air from the can fogged up my lens as if I had just transitioned to new weather that the lens didn't know of. I tried to wipe it clean and part of the fogged up lens is still there. I thought I ruined the lens! lol, but now that I saw this I realize it might of been the same reaction,,,or am I mistaken?
@JaredPolin i read something about the built quality of the d5000 is better than the d3100?.. is that true? in your oppinion jared. we want to know it from u.
@BiB1304 It may be slightly better as its bigger but really all gear is susceptible to breaking if you drop it you know what i mean? Use it enjoy it it has a new sensor so have fun.
I live in europe, and the problem is the other way around. I go outside in winter, walk a few streets, get in to a pub. The pub is warm and a bit humid due to all the people, the lens is cold from outside, and the next hour or so, the lens AND the viewfinder show nothing but fog. Cleaning doesn't help much, within a minute it'll be foggy again. The whole equipment has to get the same temperature as the environment, only patience helps...
One trick is to put equipment in an air-tight plastic bag before going outside. Things will warm up faster in the plastic bag (rather than in an insulated camera bag) and no condensation will form because the air in the bag is dry.
I was looking at a review of Zeiss 50mm ƒ/1.4 T* Planar ZF.2 (because I'm looking for a new portrait lens for a DX format camera and am not too fond of Nikkor options available) and apparently the manufacturer recommends 20 minutes of hold time in the camera bag to get used to the environment before using!
Jared! I need your help, sigma 70-200 f/2.8 or the nikon 70-200 f/2.8 vr i (1) I know theres a couple hundred in price diffrence but what would better in the long run? I am shooting mostly longer distance boats on the water shots and night time club shots.
@stefanDMS I still dont use filters because filters are cheaper than lenses lol. I dont want to take away from the quality of the high end glass but thats me, on a beach its not a terrible idea to use.
You are so discusting

Just don't use the A/C in your room. If your rooms 105 and the beach is 105 you can shoot strait away.

it can be a good sacrifice to spend $15 for an ok uv filter
rather than scratching a $1000 lens :P

@blackxthink I prefer the quality still figure i bought great glass dont want to cut down on the quality but of course the scratching is a risk.
