What should also be pointed out that this film is a warning. A warning of the grim possibilities of science gone wrong and the horrorific consaquences of man's curiosity. "Could we or should we"?
One of my favourite films. Actually I just saw it *again* about 10 minutes ago (had to test my new bigger screen).. I can't much find much problems with this film although I have a bad habit of gettings stuck to unrealistic/bad details about a film. What I can't understand, is why Jeff didn't get an Oscar for this - Really.
Nice Review ! I love this film! My favorite part is when seth got out of the pod and woke up later that night after caught the fly in his sleep that whole scene is badass then he starts to workout! That musical score was awsome too!
You are an incredibly intelligent and insightful critic. If you could post reviews of other Cronenberg films especially Naked Lunch I would really appreciate it.
ahhh i love you english people (sorry if that's not what you are) you don't sound nerdy enough to be repulsing and overbearing, yet you are always well structured in your insights. you must be robbag's son. lol
Excellent review. I like how you added the point about Stathis being the enemy at first but as the plot progresses, he becomes the hero. My parents wrecklessly took me to the theatre to see this movie when it first came out in 1986. I was born in 1977. Needless to say, I've been mentally disturbed ever since and still check over my shoulder from time to time to make sure I'm not about to be puked on.
@TheSilentPawn Lol. I remember when I first watched this is well. I was about 8 my dad rented it from the video store. I snuck downstairs to watch it with him. He told me to go back upstairs saying it was too graphic. I stayed for ten minutes watcing it and was also mentally disturbed for life! Lol.
He's likely beyond this phase, but I love Chronenberg's organic horror entries and wish he would do another (I prefer these to Eastern Promises).
Like you said, the suspense of waiting for WHEN the horrible things will happen is one of the best parts of the film. Is he gonna look EVEN worse next time we see him, and so on.
Yeesh I haven't seen this film in years, and I really should watch it again.
It was the first Cronenberg film I ever saw (like for many I guess). And although it's as much mainstream back then as Cronenberg ever went before, it's still among his best. I'm glad it was a commerical success for him.
Excellent critique, as always. The Fly has always been one of favorites. When I was a kid, I liked it because of the gore, but like most of Cronenberg's work, I liked it even more as an adult. It's such a tragic film.
Yo creo que La Mosca, es la obra maestra de David Cronenberg

@drunkdonutboy LOL. That's a movie I'd love to see!

@drunkdonutboy I always thought Cronenberg should direct the Spider-Man movie where he transforms into the Man-Spider.

@LiveFastDiarrhea Me too! It's interesting how Cronenberg has managed to make studio films without compromising his ideas or material.

@kentuckycunctator Yeah, I love the way his quirkiness and odd mannerisms really work for this film.
