Kirk Hammett is totally overrated in my oppinion.

I mean, he's good, but most of his solos are pretty the same and basic, it sounds good but it's not very innovative.

There are/were many better guitarist, like Chuck Schuldiner.

he might not be that innovative now but when he made the solo for The Unforgiven on the Black Album it was pretty innovative :) hey even Dave Mustaine admited it :P I love Metallica's music and Kirk is a BIG part of it so he's one of my favorite guitar players ever :)

tuning is the note, like D or E or Eb, (which is a half step lower than E) that your guitar is tuned to, you tune a guitar by turning the keys on the guitar head loosening or tightening the strings making it higher or lower.
